What Cable/Internet Company should I use?

napkinpoet
edited November -1 in Park Slope
Moving to Park Slope next month and trying to get things in order - what cable company/internet company best/cheapest? Thanks for any help you can give. I don't need any premium channels, but would like a DVR.

  • Cue evil laugh in background-- you don't actually have much choice. Your new hood is either zoned Cablevision or Time Warner. Both empires have issues. Please read some previous posts. The current one, Flexi entitled "TW can suck it," if I am not mistaken.

My landlord has dish, but no internet.

There are rumors of Verizon Fios.

    I wish you luck.

  • I don't think you have a choice other than Time Warner or Direct TV if you don't want cable... but I think it also depends on where you live.

  • I don't think you have an option..it's all Time Warner all the time....

  • Ah, my naivete . . . thanks for the (bad) news. I am currently on the phone with the b*stards from TW and they are already making my life miserable. I have been transferred 4X already.

I spoke to the Verizon rep at the coop and condo expo a couple of weeks ago. According to him they are in 'THe big galss building accross from the library and moving this way"

Don't hold your breath. Not sure what the status of actually getting TV over the fiber is

  • a little note on the TW automated system, which has terrible voice recognition: I've found that if I just yell in an angry voice it automatically transfers me to the que for a person. I'd rather not talk to a person there usually, but often it is necessary. I found out the yelling thing by mistake one frustrated evening.

  • yeah, i just start saying F*CK F*CK F*CK and hope the techhies have figured out that means "Speak to a live person. Stat!" It works.

That might work better than yelling "SPEAK TO A LIVE PERSON" really loudly 5 times.

Isn't the big glass building still being built? It's called Park something, right?

Once you get wired from FIOS you can get TV service over it as well as phone and internet. (although who gets phone) They provide a battery backup for the phone that lasts ~6hrs if you do get it over FIOS. The net speed is very very fast 20/5 mbps, and their hd tv has significantly lower levels of compression and a better picture than TW.

If they become available in the slope I will switch as quickly as possible.

I would avoid Time Warner Cable if at all possible. We have used them on and off for years. In the past 3, it has been off. They are horrid. Bad customer service.

DishTV has served us well, as has Verizon DSL and phone. Not a fan of VioP. The DVR service on Dish is great. Easy interface and reliable. The only plus about TW Cable DVR is the fact that you can record 2 channels at once, or watch 1 and record another. Can't do that on Dish.

  • Time warner is also market testing a new pricing scheme in two markets in texas where they charge by the gigabyte.

It will be somethign like $39.95 for X gigabytes per month, + exorbitant overage charges. with of course a graduated scale, so you could pay 2x for twice as many gigs a month.

Just another reason to avoid them.

I am roting for FIOS to come through. The picture seems clearer than through TW cable.
