Gym Recommendations

I'll be moving to PS at the end of next month or beginning of August (if all goes well with the board meeting).

I've heard good things about the 9th Street Y, but it's not convienent enough for me (if it's not on my way home from work, I'm not likely to go).

Can anyone recommend a gym that's near Grand Army Plaza? I know there's the Crunch on Flatbush, but I'd like to avoid Crunch if possible. I'm hoping to spend no more than $60-$70 a month for a no-frills gym.

Oh, and another thing I'm looking for is a Frozeade (is that what they're called?) stand or a sno-cone stand near Grand Army Plaza. Frozeades are those frozen lemonade treats you can usually buy outside the Strand in Manhattan during the summer. Sooooo good for a hangover.

Thanks,
-anthony

  • Don't know about the price, but Eastern Athletic Club is right by Grand Army.

There are usually Frozade stands at the GAP entrance to the park on summer weekends. Check out the corner right across from the library.

Eastern Athletic would be the choice for me. I recently ended a membership at Slope Fitness on Union and 7th and am not renewing because the place isn't so well run: turnover by trainers, staff never knows anything about programs, manager's always going to call you back. I checked out Crunch but I got the hard sell. My neighbors use EA and love it.

  • EA is a little over $100/month. I liked it a lot, but just couldn't afford it anymore...

  • Body Reserve, Union and 5th.

If you can afford the year membership it's great. I bought it on a credit card and just paid it off like a regular monthly membership and it was still far less than the going rate in the area.

If you want a bunch of personal TVs at every treadmill and elliptical it's not for you. But if you want an honest workout it's great.
