Fish ??? — Brooklynian

Fish ???

Ok , so my wife has a 50 gallon freshwater tank.
She used to buy/trade at the Brooklyn Aquarium on 9th.
Chris was a great guy to work with and would often trade fish with her whenever she induced mating pairs to produce.

Aside from this,
the fish she acquired would usually survive the transfer,
which is kinda helpful ya know ?

the only other nearby place is not what we consider to be a good store and not surprisingly the survive rate is pathetically low.
Bear in mind , she is adept enough to "ween" the new fish in a mix of our tank water with whatever water they came in , in a smaller tank before putting them in the main.

So those of you with tanks,
where are you going these days to get quality fish for your tank ???

  • We had a small fishtank for my son some time ago and we used to get our fish from Petland on 5th Ave. We were pretty lucky with the fish we got from there. Most of them were very healthy except for 1 or 2 of the 20-25 we bought. There was one type of fish my son loved and it was the one with the long flowing tails and it never failed that when we purchased one from the store it was always pregnant.

I do have a friend who is really serious about her fish and she goes to Brooklyn Zoo (or Aquarium) on Ralph Ave for her fresh water fish and she goes to someplace in Ridgewood for her salt water fish.
  • thank you kindly for the effort, Stacey

the local store is the one i was referring to but did not wish to be disparaging.
we have consistently had very very very very very very very very very very very bad luck there.

As my wife works in the industry, i take her word that its something to do with them not us when 10 new fish die within 2 days.

I will look into the place on Ralph ave . Thanks.

any other suggestions would certainly be appreciated.
  • I've had great luck with New World Aquarium on 36th street in manhattan, between 3rd and 4th. I've bought nearly all of my freshwater fish there. Though I should mention I raise very basic fish - nothing with any special requirements apart from food and clean water.

I also used liveaquaria.com for upside down catfish and 18 months later I still have all four. And of the two plants I bought from them, one is going strong.

i will look up New World Aquarium, thanks !

I think our fish are all basic.
    its her thing,
i just feel bad that shes annoyed over having lost 10 new fish
(the only time i had any upper hand in this was when i managed to half-convince her that a gefilte fish was an actual fish)

    Mollys ,cardinals,clowns , catfish,plecco,angels,discus ..
    nothing too weird..usually..

i dunno if she'd buy fish over the net. i think she'd want to inspect em.
Certainly worth a try if the fish LIVE though, thanks
  • Just want to second New World Aquarium. Its a bit of a trek, but worth it when the fish actually live more then a day.
