New Owner for Hank's Saloon — Brooklynian

New Owner for Hank's Saloon

Subject: New Owner for Hank's Saloon

Anyone know anything about this?
I was talking to one of the bartenders last week (Gina? Jeannie? I'm bad with names), and she said their supplies of the hard stuff are low because they're using up what they have until the place changes hands.
I hope they don't lose the uber-dive aesthetic.

  • Hrrm. My upstairs neighbor is a bartender there too; I'll ask him about this next time I run into him.
  • So I just finally saw my neighbor and asked him about it. He said they've already changed owners and that if it stays open it'll won't change, but right now it's not clear whether they'll stay open.

There are so many developers sniffing around this area that I wouldn't be surprised if they tore it down and tried to slap up some apartments or something. That would be a shame.
  • Subject: hanks

hanks is the bar i love to hate. i guess i'd hate to see it torn down, even though the last time i was there, i was ignored by the bartender for 20 minutes.
have you tried the brooklyn tavern, on 3rd between state and atlantic? very cool place. it's achieved the most authentic british pub vibe of any place i've been to in nyc, without trying overtly (or even covertly) to be british. great mix of people. it has $2 drafts of bud light.
  • I met the new owner briefly, he also owns Last Exit and a couple of other places.

Seems like a "bar" type of guy. He is well aware that the location is a prize but seemed earnest about keeping Hanks, Hanks.

  • That's good to hear. I don't go to Hank's very often, but sometimes it's EXACTLY what I need. And what would all the neighborhood drunks do without it?
  • :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

omg apollonia i heart your new avatar!!!

    sorry, carry on.

The owner of Last Exit and is now the owner of Hanks? Cool! These same people are the ones who founded and revived Flying Saucer down the block from Hanks!

This can only be a good thing. And I hope they keep the old regular old guys in there during the day. Give them a place to hang and don't totally yuppify it. Hanks is special becuase it's like Rudy's in the city on 9th avune. Old men during the day. Young ones at night.

Viva hanks! And the Spirit of the Radio!!!

I *love* Rudy's! When I first moved to New York I lived in Hell's Kitchen, and Rudy's quickly became my neighborhood bar of choice. I still like to stop in on the rare occasions when I'm in that neck o' the woods. It's hard to believe this joint hasn't gotten chased out with all the yuppies that have taken over that neighborhood, but I'm glad it hasn't. Can't beat the free hot dogs and red beer!
