Your MessageBoard/Blogs Identity and your Personal Life
I've come across a new dilemma and and hope you can all bring insight.
Here's my question:
Why did you choose your login/online name?
How about your profile picture?
How must do you release of your personal information on discussion boards?
where do you draw the line, or do you, on your web/online persona and your in person life?

Well, I'll start.
I'm a first generation wetback and damn proud of my family and all the fun craziness that occurs with a HUGE family migrates into the US. So one day here in Brooklyn a deli clerk handed me my sandwich and said, "Here you go mamita."
It put a smile on my face and there you go. Mamacita was the name I wanted to use here.
How about you? -
i wanted a name that sounded food-y and southern, plus i do love my tea!
i've always figured Sweet T would be a good drag name, too.*
*for the uninitiated: FTM trannies call testosterone T. -
Screen name - Long story short - survived unfortunate life-threatening incident during a phase of direct action activism - afterwards decided I wanted to visit everywhere in the world before I died
Picture - fits the screen name
Personal info on discussion boards - a paltry amount - my Facebook page is much more revealing
Assuming false personas online is simply bullshit - it's possible to be yourself and still reveal only what you want. -
Why did you choose your login/online name?
Em is the nickname a former co-worker gave me bcuz she couldn't pronounce my real name.
E&M are the two middle letters of my real name so that's how she came up with the name.
I tried to use just "Em" but it said that it was already taken by another member.
So , I then added the number 26 cuz that was my age when I registered here.
How about your profile picture?
Hmmm. My first one I liked cuz it was something different.
The one I have up now is a pic of me.
Maybe I'll change it again , I don't know yet.
How much do you release of your personal information on discussion boards?
Probably more than I should.......
I've been to 3 Brooklynian events , so it's not like I'm anonymous.
Where do you draw the line, or do you, on your web/online persona and your personal life?
I don't know. I haven't been put in a situation on here that makes me want to step back and draw a line. -
Is this related to the time I asked you which museum you worked at?

As for me, my screen name is a fake name, I don't like people knowing things about me unless I choose to tell them.
I do know the way people write and the things that they say can actually reveal their identity without them even knowing it. -
being a practicing satanist, i thought the screen name might warm the hearts of a few others out there who haven't taken the plunge to the dark side.
actually, it really doesn't mean much, but the issue of putting one's information out there for the world to see can be a tricky one especially given the explosion of "social networking" sites such as myspace, facebook and many others like them.
for message boards i'd prefer to keep my info to myself. not sure why, but i would. on a site like facebook, it's almost looked down upon if one doesn't divulge certain bits of information in a transparent manner, as everyone does so in order to allow for certain connections and transfer of information to occur. not that this can't happen on message boards because it's a similar concept and i'd be more than be willing to share information offline with most. it's basically a personal preference.
online identities do create a footprint and i'm weary at times of creating too large of a footprint during my travels. -
Sometimes, I really want to just use (HELLO!) my name as a username.
But in this age of google I really am paranoid. does anyone feel me on this? -
"queen" is actually a change from "Empress." I once took a corny "what tarot card are you" quiz online, and it said I was the Empress card -- and their description of the Empress made it sound like I was a nurturing, fun-loving, laid-back gourmand-and-Earth-mother kind of person. Which I liked.
as for "Callipygos"...well, that's ancient Greek, and the quick-and-dirty translation for that is "great ass." And...yeah, that's been observed... -
I used to bartend/waitress and found the most frequent thing I said all day was, "what can I get you?"
I translated that to "Whatchuwant?" cause I was over it. -
My screename is a combination of the first 2 letters of my first, middle and last name. I like that it sounds japanese to certain people.
-
My first post on the board was about local butcher shops in Prospect Heights. Once I had an identity here, I decided to sick with it. Over the years, I'm sure Ive revealed enough information about myself to be identified, even for those who don't go to board events (most of which I attend). However, I try not to put enough info for the casual observer to ID me.
-
Why did you choose your login/online name?
It is my name, *shrug*.
How about your profile picture?
I change it from time to time depending on my mood. I guess I'm currently in an OZ state of mind.
How must do you release of your personal information on discussion boards?
Probably more than I should. I tend to be fairly open.
where do you draw the line, or do you, on your web/online persona and your in person life?
It is the same person. I tend to be shy, I can get over that on a board. I will be more quiet in person, but I will get over that as well and be pretty much the same. -
quijibo is a reference to a simpsons episode
avatar is my dog, changes now and then
anything significant is best discussed at a karaoke bar over drinks and a spinach burrito while waiting to sing brown eyed girl by morrison... -
my screen name is my online name that I try, really hard, to keep separate from my real name. employers know how to use google, people!
it is also the combination of the names of the two cats I had at the time that I registered for the site (and previously for LJ etc). alafair and nadia. they're both dead, though, but I loved them tons.
my userpics have always been me. somewhat recognizable but I think most strangers don't recognize me unless they are making an effort/have more information than they're letting on. I don't care if people know who I am live ... as long as they think my name is alafair nadia.
-
Carmen is my "stage name." I used to model and it's the name I used (along with a fake last name which I no longer use.) I dont remember why I picked it in the first place.
My profile picture is how I feel most days, especially when reading the intertubes.
I'm pretty candid and easy to spot (saying I'm blond with green and pink hair makes me easy to find.) I've been on internet message boards for a loooong long time and have met LOTS (hundreds) of people through the internet, so I guess I'm kind of used to "standing up" to defend the things I say online.
I don't really draw the line- I'll say anything online that I wold say to a group of strangers at a bar. I consider it to be about the same thing. I'm pretty much the same person online as I am in real life, or at least I try to be (mamacita can attest to this
) -
as far as disclosure goes...
my online persona is, if anything, more reasonable and calmer than my real personality. i do think about future potential employers figuring out who i am -- i try not to make it super-easy, but i'm certain it's possible. but if they're not going to hire me on account of my being a sarcastic, opinionated, know-it-all, well, it's not really going to work out between us anyway.
on the other hand, i also keep in mind in all recordable conversations (online, email, voicemail, etc.) the example of a professor who joined my college faculty for, as it turns out, only one year. she said a number of incredibly inappropriate things to me and to at least a couple other people, maybe more. if she'd had the balls to say them to our faces, she would have risked only our return fire. but emails and voicemails, the redoubt of cowardly bullies, are remarkably easy to forward to those with real power. -
My screen name is just a nick name that my boyfriend gave me. BTW, he's Spanky.
The pic I chose was my sweet baby's first picture. When I first started reading brooklynian, it was the pets forum that drew me in.
I try not to divulge too much. However, since it's not my real name I feel a bit more comfortable. -
Well my screen name is my name -
I used to have my guardian angel as my avatar
but it no longer shows up on Firefox of IE
I have given out personal info on line here nothing major but more people have recognized my husband (from the Flickr photos) than myself.
In person I am much louder, curse a WHOLE lot more and talk faster than I type (considering I am a typist by trade that's pretty fast
) but all in all I am a pretty friendly person -
I will note that I rarely, if ever, post pictures of myself on local type message boards. I'm more likely to share pictures of myself to non-local people. Because of my previous "modeling" I still get recognized on the street sometimes and its irritating and kind of creepy, so I try not to perpetuate that. I also don't really want to encourage people associating the Carmen I am now with the "modeling" stuff, so I dont post pics so people won't recognize me and make the leap.
However, if people ask I'll usually give them one, especially if I'm meeting someone. I'm not a creepster. -
I chose my name because multiple things in my life seem to be happening in nine month intervals- moving, baby, maternity leave, moving (yet again). I like it because it reminds me of how different my life can be in nine short months.
My avatar is a pic that daver posted, slightly altered. I'm really new to message boards, etc, and I couldn't think of/create something that really reflected me more than a huge question mark. So I guess it's kind of a placeholder until I find something else that represents me.
I lurk A LOT. Waaaay before I became a registered user, too. So I feel like I know many of you regulars, but you don't know much about me which I do find a little weird because it's kind of voyeuristic. But I'm a shy person, and more of an observer than a participator by nature, so it fits with my personality that I'm not very active in discussions. I try to only chime in when my inner dialogue feels worthy of being posted. Plus I read the boards on my iPhone mostly which makes it less than simple to type/review a potential post.
I'm probably on the overly cautious end of the spectrum in terms of disclosure. I'm really, super private in the real world, and I'm just getting into things like facebook. Even there, I'm only friends with people I'm friends with in reality and I refuse to complete my profile. I acknowledge that this is weird...
On the Aji thread, I just said what I ate (shrimp empanada and sangria) and Piero knew exactly who I was. I think it's the possibility that someone can identify you with so little information that weirds me out. Not that Piero is a madman, but still. Then again, if everyone were like me, this board wouldn't be so much fun. -
My name is a combination of 2 of my cats, Caseopia and Pele. I wanted something unique that I could use for just about everything and that no one else would have. As for personal information? I'm soooo good at concealing my true identity, like Superman when he wears glasses to change into Clark Kent! Nobody knows who I really am... :-'

Especially not those people who own that Italian joint across the street from where you work
-
There's an Italian place across the street from my job? Wait a minute... How do you know where I work?!? Foiled again! #-o
-
Flexichick because I like yoga (been doing it for 10+ years), but have gained a good 10 lbs, so ChubbyChick might be my next alias.
Picture - rotating pussy shots.
Revealing info? Too much....more than enough to put it all together if you are really, really paying attention. Still like that anonymity too much to put it all out there. -

LOL Great minds think alike
plus Im sure we also agree that "Babyj" is absolutely adorable too! (By the way how is she?) -
BabyJ is great; I think she takes after her guardian angel's lover.

I'm really new to the forums (read them at first for a bit)-and at first I wondered if there was a sort of introduction people do on these msg boards...then I considered the sometimes desired anonymity of the interwebs. A friend recommended I join and then I just started reading/posting.
Why did you choose your login/online name?
It asked me for a name and I really didn't know what to pick. I had just finished an episode of South Park. I already want to change it- but don't want to start a habit of that-besides, who knows if I'd settle on the next one? I think I just don't want to solely associate with South Park.
How about your profile picture?
Picked it for the same reason as the name -Maybe I wanted snacky smores to make sense before I pick another of my images.
How must do you release of your personal information on discussion boards?
I wonder. I feel like I'm too new for this answer because I haven't posted a ton and no one knows enough about me to pick up on other things. Depends on what is being discussed, I imagine. And then I set boundaries- but I'm a pretty open person.
where do you draw the line, or do you, on your web/online persona and your in person life?
I surely don't want to be found at random on google, but facebook has enough info on it- even things that are purely for amusement-that risk being taken seriously. I think I am more or less the same person though-typing gives you time/ability to edit unnoticed- perhaps I am a tad more expressive/thoughtful about what I mean or feel online.
That can also lead to over-thought though...
