USPS
does everyone else get their mail delivered regularly? ours comes *most* of the time but packages never come and then get mailed back to the sender.
our mail used to come 3-4 times a week but after excessive complaining, it's about 5 days a week.
also, does anyone have a p.o. box in PH? fulton&grand(?) is the closest post office, right?

I had a po box there for a year when I was between houses, it was cheap. I live a couple of blocks away so it was very convenient. Our mail service is pretty good, we live on Putnam so i guess we have a different delivery guy than you.

I always get a notice if a package has come and then I go to the post office on fulton to pick it up. There is usually some sort of mayhem going on there though but what can you do.

on washington ave we don't have a regular delivery person, and every single one of them totally blows. it's really infuriating and it's systemic, at least in that post office. if you're having trouble with a local post office, call the toll free number on the usps website and complain. I've done that before and had packages redelivered (even though the pink slip kept being ignored). also, I've called a few times and complained about how trashed my mail is or how I've had to set up automatic bill payments on EVERYTHING because I rarely get my bills on time.
also, if you notice that you've got mail for a different address, don't bother giving it to the postal worker -- dump it in the mailbox for redelivery. they never pick up shit, and regularly deliver great big piles of mail to our building that really belongs two or three buildings away.
wow, now I'm pissed off.   -

I have PO box for my business at the Van Brunt USPS Station in Park Slope (9th Street between 4th and 5th). It's a bit of a hike, particularly in winter; but you can get the B7 bus where Flatbush intersects with 7th Avenue (across from "The Mighty Wind") to 9th Street and walk down from there. I've had the PO box there since 1998, and I've never had a problem. -
There was a thread about this a couple of months ago. On which I ranted about how much I loathe the postal service in this hood. For packages, we always get everything delivered to work now; it's just a million times easier, even with having to carry it home on the subway.
We do get our regular mail every day, but it's often crumpled angrily into the box, and the one and only time I ever actually encountered the carrier in person, she YELLED at me. -
I've had postal service problems at every apartment I've had in Brooklyn. I finally gave up and now just have packages delivered to my workplace.

Yeah it's pretty much always been bad as far as I remember. I grew up in the black hole of post offices 11208. I've had letters go from NYC to South Carolina quicker than stuff making it across the city to me there. -
What worries me is that every single day we get mail that is obviously not ours...not even the same damn building. Now, I'm wondering, where is all of my mail?

It's true...recently we even got some important legal stuff for someone else! And we still get mail for someone who moved out at least two years ago. If not longer.
Wangechi Mutu, if you're out there, please send in a change of address form! -

Yeah, what's up with that? A few pieces of mail should fit quite comfortably in my box and yet everything is jammed up in there. I was particularly peeved by my smooshed birthday cards last month. I mean come on.bluedove wrote: Wangechi Mutu, if you're out there, please send in a change of address form!
That's HI-larrrious! I get mail for random people all the time and I just put on the floor with the rest of the randomness. But now I just realized I didn't get my TimeOut NY this week which means it's probably burried in that pile of junk. -

When we moved into our place, we were getting (and still do almost a year later) the mail of the couple who lived there before us. I actually ended up Googling them to discover one of them had a blog and they were living in Japan. I emailed them and sent the important looking stuff to their parents' house or whatever. They've just had a baby and we're internet friends. 8)

 I never have problems with regular mail, except when our regular carrier is on vacation (then we get mail from every person who's either moved away or died). Maybe that's because I live in a brownstone with only two apartments. But USPS packages is another story. *If* I actually receive the package, it takes weeks. Several times packages have *disappeared*.

There's a Mailboxes Plus place across the street from me on Vanderbilt between Dean and Bergen. THey have mailboxe rentals {obviously}, you can get packages delivered there and they also ship.

it's weird, though, because when I lived in Manhattan, I never had this problem. I mean, I always have packages sent to work, but I got my magazines and letters and bills and everything in my mailbox, without the angry crunch. what is wrong with Brooklyn? this is really irritating. -
alafairnadia wrote: it's weird, though, because when I lived in Manhattan, I never had this problem.
Same here! My first year in NYC I lived in midtown (with two roomies and a TINY bedroom) and never had a single problem, but it was too expensive and not a neighborhood where I felt at home, and I've been in Brooklyn ever since. I love just about everything about living in Brooklyn but the mail service has been awful. And the post offices I've had to use here have always been overcrowded, understaffed, and dirty. Bleh. -

A while ago they upped there rate to $10 (from 5$, reasonable) per package recieved, which is unfortunately more than most my packages are worth. -
how bout with all the different mailpeople around, any mail that doesn't have an apartment number on it is left in the lobby, expecting it to find its own home. i'll admit to scoring some mags this way, and i assume that's why i don't see my NY mag every week, and god only knows what else.
in my 7 years of owning an apt in PH, i've never received a package slip for things that need to be picked up at the PO... i've always had to intuit that packages were sitting on the dusty shelves waiting for me.
maybe if we could advertise shitty mail service, fewer moneyed hipsters would be moving in and driving the prices to the level where i can't afford a freakin house now that i have a kid who needs a place to run around without disturbing the (very kind, so far) neighbors. -
My hatred for The Bad Post Office (Adelphi) knows no bounds. Do not complain to them, because no one there gives a shit about anything. Since the situation is allowed to continue, the superintendent for the district obviously doesn't give a shit either. Instead, complain to the higher ups:

It makes my blood boil to think that we have to make a fuss about this basic service, which we pay for and should run like clockwork. -
I get mail everyday but the mail gets delivered at like 6 - 7 PM.
-
this one time, i called the post office everyday b/c i knew i was expecting a package. they could never find it and then finally it was return to sender and back to where it came from without the post office ever claiming to have had it... and the business has my CORRECT address.
-
actually, when i lived in queens and got a job in the neighborhood, it was funny b/c i was something like, 34-15 37th street & i found out my co-worker had the same addresss only avenue, 34-15 37th AVENUE and so we would get each others mail and give it to each other and the whole thing was really sweet but also kind of creepy...
who is getting my mail now, and who is getting YOUR mail?!   -
What's with the stretchedness?!

I'm sure most mail problems are the result of sloppiness, but on the off chance someone out there starts noticing a complete lack in mail be aware that it is very very easy for people to change your mailing address without you knowing. Last February I noticed my mail had trickled down to none, but I didn't think a whole lot of it, and frankly let it go on for too long because I was busy and didn't have a ton of time to investigate. When I finally did, I called one of my magazines to figure out why I wasn't getting it anymore only to find out that they had a change of address on file from the post office. I called the post office and found out that someone had gone to my local branch and put in a change of address form for me. It's extremely easy to do since the post office does not require valid ID when submitting a change in person. Anyway it took weeks to straighten all of this out because the post office kept insisting I had submitted the change myself and that they had sent a change of address confirmation to my apartment (which they hadn't).

Subject: my rant...
So, I was supposed to receive my bank deposit slips about two weeks ago....finally contacted E-trade to let them know they hadn't arrived, etc...
WTF, I hate the Adelphi USPS office!!! Should I be worried about someone tapping into my account? Not that there's much there....
oh well... -
the adelphi branch should be cleaned out from the top down and started over. i've lived in foreign countries twice before and have sent mail back and forth to the states faster than it takes to send mail back and forth from brooklyn. when i have something urgent, i bring it to work with me in manhattan and drop it in a mailbox there--that seems to cut 3-5 days off the delivery time.
and talk about misdirected deliveries! i am constantly getting other people's mail. and every so often i hear from a friend that they sent me something that never arrived.
one thing i urge everyone to do about that: if you get mail that's not for you, don't just throw it away, put it back out for the letter carrier to redeliver. this means there's a chance it may get to the person it was meant for and it holds the carrier responsible for the problem. if everyone did this. . . ok, i don't know that it would do a thing. but i still think it's a good idea.
also, it's really only worth doing with first-class mail (anything with a real stamp or that says "first-class postage paid.") if it says anything else (such as "presorted std" or "standard,") it is certifiably junk and should go directly into recycling. not much point making the usps redeliver spam.
speaking of spam--and i know i'm getting off the thread here--one good solution for junk mail is to take everything out, fold it carefully, and stuff it into the postage paid envelope, and mail it back to the spammer. the more stuff you put in the envelope, the more it costs the spammer in return postage.
ok, back on track: why does a national postal service, which presumably has standardized policies and practices across the country, suck in brooklyn? -
You know you can have mail and packages delivered to the community post office on Washington and Prospect, F&B Enterprises. The owner, who name I will mutilate, Haleejay, is a wonderful guy. And it's a hell of a lot closer to the real post office.

That is a great idea!! I am so sick of getting Capitol One solicitations (at least 5 a week) and these "you have been approved for home equity . . ." -
