assault on 6th ave, wednesday
hi all
i got the following email from a coworker. this happened to her friend on wednesday, and i haven't found any other info about it here or elsewhere online. not to cause unnecessary alarm, but i thought i would pass along the warning. stay safe.
Subject: park slope attack
A good friend's girlfriend was attacked by a mentally ill man with a
butcher knife on Wednesday walking along 6th Ave in Park Slope. She's
going to survive, but it was bad. My friend asked me to warn anyone I
know around Park Slope because they think he's still in the
neighborhood. She was just walking along the street talking on her
cell phone and he attacked her without a word. I think the police
have an idea who he is and that he's extremely ill. They say he's
probably under 30, slender, about 5'9", and was wearing checkered
shorts, a white tshirt and gray sweatshirt. And they think he's
latino, but I never trust them to get that right. Anyway, not to
scare you. Just so you know to be alert.

Wow, that's horrible. The mentally ill need a place to go that's safe, for them and for us. Dumping them out of their treatment centers is perhaps the worst legacy of the 1980s.
Also, do they say what time the attack happened? -
I hear you on the deinstitionalization issue. "let's get them back in the community" is a nice thought but needs action to establish support systems in that community.
no idea on timing. will post again if i find out. -
Also, where on 6th Ave? It is a long street. I hope your friend's girlfriend will be ok!

"Blame the victim" coming in 3...2...1...

hi all
i just heard back from my co worker and she said it was at 6th ave and lincoln place. she's not sure of the time but says it was "late but not super late." apparently there was one witness who called the police but was too afraid to jump in. there were no other people around (to her knowledge) -
I walk by that intersection multiple times a week. I'll let people know to keep an eye out.
-
(sigh)
horrible
She's going to be okay, and it wasn't a butcher knife. But it was a very serious attack, and the part about mentally ill and uncared for is correct. I am furious that these things happen, and I totally blame deinstitutionalization and lack of treatment and followup with the mentally ill.
Yes, it was at night. She got help right away, which means alot. The people that lived there came out, etc. -
God, my thoughts are with the victim. When I heard about this today I immediately called my wife and told her to be on the lookout, as she was outside.
I only hope that this victim should have a speedy and total recovery. -
this is really terrible
. i hope the victim recovers fast. -
I hope the victim recovers.
I am angry that this is the first and only place that has this information. If there is man running around town stabbing people, people should know.
Thanks for sharing this information. -
Right now, the presumed crazy man attacker is in jail.
The man was id'd by the woman he attacked, and by another witness, arrested and held over on a high bail Friday night. Lots of the victim's friends went to the courthouse. -
Sigh of relief! So glad this guy is behind bars.
-
Yeah, but if he is mentally ill, maybe he needs to receive medical treatment in a hospital. Keeping sick people in prison -- even on death row -- eats tax payers' dollars and the sick person stays sick.
Who knows? Maybe the man is sane. -
Who cares if he is sane or mentally ill or sent to prison or a mental institute or how much it cost to incarcerate assholes that attempt to murder people, they don't belong on the street..
-
They don't belong on the street. I agree. I wish that we could keep them off of the street, or at least properly supervised and medicated BEFORE they hurt someone.
A guy that I grew up with was a violent schizophrenic who eventually beat the crap out of a cop in a subway station (and was finally put away forever). Prior to that, they kept putting him into the hospital and letting him out again. Every time they let him out, he got sicker. He used to be a sweet guy, a long long time ago before it ate him alive. -
UPDATE! Article in today's Post:
'PSYCHO' DRAMA IN PARK SLOPE ATTACK
By JOHN DOYLE
Last updated: 3:23 am

A violent ex-con who had violated his parole in April was still free to brutally attack a professional dancer from Park Slope, authorities said yesterday.
Thomas Russo, 32, allegedly stalked Diana Greiner, 39, along Sixth Avenue in Brooklyn at about 11:45 p.m. on June 17.
Greiner, a dancer, told cops she was vaguely aware that Russo was following her, alternating between being in front of her and behind her, sources said.
Russo got in front of her outside 176 Sixth Ave. at Lincoln Place and bent down to tie his shoe. As she walked toward him, he sprang up and brandished a knife, the sources said.
She covered her face, and Russo allegedly struck her in the head - fracturing her skull - slashed her face and body, then fled, authorities said.
As cops interviewed Greiner at the hospital, she remembered she'd seen the psycho sneak into a bodega.
From the store's surveillance video, cops were able to identify Russo from the parolee database.
He had been released from prison in November 2006, after serving a year for attempted robbery. In April, he was arrested for possession and sale of marijuana.
Instead of sending Russo back to jail after the weed bust, state parole officials put him in a drug-treatment program.
Russo was charged Tuesday with attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon, and is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail. -
good god.
any updates on the victim's health? not trying to pry, just want to be sure she is recovering well.
