Big Night On The Town by Charles Bukowski
drunk on the dark streets of some city,
it's night, you're lost, where's your
room?
you enter a bar to find yourself,
order scotch and water.
damned bar's sloppy wet, it soaks
part of one of your shirt
sleeves.
It's a clip joint-the scotch is weak.
you order a bottle of beer.
Madame Death walks up to you
wearing a dress.
she sits down, you buy her a
beer, she stinks of swamps, presses
a leg against you.
the bar tender sneers.
you've got him worried, he doesn't
know if you're a cop, a killer, a
madman or an
Idiot.
you ask for a vodka.
you pour the vodka into the top of
the beer bottle.
It's one a.m. In a dead cow world.
you ask her how much for head,
drink everything down, it tastes
like machine oil.
you leave Madame Death there,
you leave the sneering bartender
there.
you have remembered where
your room is.
the room with the full bottle of
wine on the dresser.
the room with the dance of the
roaches.
Perfection in the Star Turd
where love died
laughing.

Another one for you guys about to have your last round and find your way home!
Be Drunk
You have to be always drunk. That's all there is to it--it's the
only way. So as not to feel the horrible burden of time that breaks
your back and bends you to the earth, you have to be continually
drunk.
But on what?Wine, poetry or virtue, as you wish. But be
drunk.
And if sometimes, on the steps of a palace or the green grass of
a ditch, in the mournful solitude of your room, you wake again,
drunkenness already diminishing or gone, ask the wind, the wave,
the star, the bird, the clock, everything that is flying, everything
that is groaning, everything that is rolling, everything that is
singing, everything that is speaking. . .ask what time it is and
wind, wave, star, bird, clock will answer you:"It is time to be
drunk! So as not to be the martyred slaves of time, be drunk, be
continually drunk! On wine, on poetry or on virtue as you wish."
Charles Baudelaire -
Not drunk is he who from the floor
Can rise alone and still drink more;
But drunk is he who prostrate lies
Without the power to move or rise.
Thomas Love Peacock (1785-1866) -
Daver you beat me to it, that one above was going to be one of the chosen poems but decided to go with Baudelaire..

There is something about a martini
A tingle exceedingly pleasant
A yellow, a mellow martini
I think that I'll have one at present
There is something about a martini
'Ere the dining and dancing begin
And to tell you the truth,
It is not the vermouth
I think that, perhaps, it's the gin
-- Ogden Nash -
Was never into Martini's but love my Tequila's!

Hangovers
Immediately on waking, start telling yourself how lucky you are to be feeling so bloody awful. This recognizes the truth that if you do not feel bloody awful after a hefty night then you are still drunk, and must sober up in a waking state before hangover dawns.
Kingsley Amis -
I like to have a martini,
Two at the very most.
After three I'm under the table,
after four I'm under my host.
---Dorothy Parker.
Tho' my martini days are over I do kinda like this - substitute your liquor of choice!
I liked Sweet T's ode to the martini too!
