shrieking birds in the Con Ed plant? — Brooklynian

shrieking birds in the Con Ed plant?

Anyone know what the deal is with the very loud birds that appear to have just hatched in the power plant on 23rd st.? I'm assuming they are birds, but I don't think I've ever heard such loud birds in my life. I can hear them 2 blocks away! And, I didn't think an electric plant would provide a hospitable environment for wildlife...

  • Did you see the huge nest in the southwest corner of the plant? I don't know if this is the source, but we live nearby and hear it too.

There are worse things in life I suppose.
  • i actually haven't heard them for the last few days so i thought maybe they got big enough to fly away. i haven't seen the nest-- i guess i'm too short!
  • Green-Wood works with PS 320 on raising pheasants from eggs (been doing it for years). 8 doz. this year. The assumption is an adult from year's past is either on the prowl (the bird is very territorial) or acting motherly.

    Yes, loud as hell!
  • The nest may be an outpost of the monk parrots from Green-Wood, but they don't make noise after dark.

    Pheasant season!
  • hmm, it has been pretty dark some of the times that i've heard the birds. at least 9:30 at night, my usual time arriving home from work (sigh).
