What used to be on 2nd Street between 4th and 5th avenues?

What buildings existed on 2nd Street between 4th and 5th avenues? I
have the sensation that a Marriott-hotel-style building erected itself on that block over night.

  • Parking lots and warehouse businesses pretty much. Myabe a residential building or two.
  • In the 50's there were a few residential buildings on the north side of the street that were torn down. They became the parking lots that the previous poster mentioned.
  • Thanks.

I never noticed the new apartments before and was surprised. Anyone know when those new apartments went up?
  • are you talking about the Heritage Park Slope Condo? I believe the apartments were up many months ago...

I think so...I just googled Heritage Park Slope Condo...but the website is so ridiculous that I didn't have the patience to sit through all the animation.

It's not the ugliest architecture, but that side of the block is so incongruous with the rest of the neighborhood. It looks like a big hotel or catering hall from Long Island.
  • I lived around the corner from there in the late 90s and, if I recall correctly, the first of the new buildings came in around 1999 or 2000, right around when I moved out (I'm not sure those are the ones you are asking about though). When I lived there it was mostly parking lots and 3-4 story apartment buildings..and an odd doll graveyard in the lot at the sw corner of 2nd and 5th (anyone remember that one?) There was also a discount furniture warehouse place at the ne corner of 2nd and 4th.
  • yeah, the condos were built very very quickly, seemingly overnight. I knew they weren't there just 1 1/2 years ago when I was looking at apartments across the street. I remember there used to be some kind of warehouse (that I believe were also used as parking garage) in that location. btw you can skip all the introduction on the web site by clicking "skip intro" in the upper right corner.
  • oh, and supposedly the architect is pretty famous. so, yeah, beauty is in the eyes of beholder. marriott style or not, I think the apartments are selling pretty well in that building. based on the web site, there are only 3 or 4 apartments not currently in contract.

One entire side of the block with the exception of a few older buildings looks all brand new, almost artificial.
