Well, we are. But I agree, people should have a bell on their bikes.

It's not just a good idea ... it's the law.

  • Yeah, snotty right wing conservatives must GO! That is what I call progressive! Word up.
  • Well, since THIS FUCKING THREAD has turned political too, I'll just offer my favorite Nancy Reagan quote: "I'm just here for the drugs."
  • Someone sure needs attention today. Word!
  • How many people here use "word" in their every day conversation?
  • I use a lot of words in everyday conversation.

Some of them even make sense.

I like the fact some bike laws are ignored. It gets me to work on time.
I'll keep that in mind when I'm driving my evil SUV and you run a red light in front of me and I don't slam on the brakes. I've yet to see a biker obey the rules of the road.
  • Eggcream I was making fun.

    Good one.

Where would they go? Nobody wants them. I say live and let live. They are more irritating than strollers and bikes though.

I don't run red lights, but please hit me anyway. I could use the money. Word!

Why don't you ask this guy:

Bikers obey the rules of the road probably as often as drivers' even notice or care about keeping a bike lane clear. But if you want to really talk about rules, I believe in NYC, bikes are entitled to the FULL lane and only need to use the bike lane when its preferred. So if you want ALL rules to be enforced, you might want to rethink that before all traffic gets maxed at 15 mph.
  • I heard the funniest thing today. A friend was commenting on the new bike lanes on Lincoln and said, "I saw the first biker riding on the new bike lanes!"
    "He was going against traffic!"

    Ah, love Darwinism
  • Ok, so I know right away that I am going to piss some people off, but some (not all) bikers really get on my nerves. I am a person who walks everywhere, and takes the subway if the walk is over an hour and really needed. However, I have been clipped or involved in ridiculous altercations with at least four bikers in the last year alone. From walking down 3rd street and getting "tire burn" on my leg because one biker couldn't stop at the walk sign to LITERALLY being knocked on my ass on the Brooklyn Bridge by a biker when I was, in fact, in the walking lane. Maybe, just maybe everyone needs to remember to respect each other. I know that I would appreciate it! Sorry for the rant...

That maybe faster than the traffic currently moves.

There are lots of jerks on bikes just like there are lots of jerks in cars. I got into a huge fight with a guy who threatened a woman with a baby in her car on Mothers day. He was on the left side of her car in her blind spot, they were both making the left turn into a parking lot. When the light turned gray, he started turning, startling her and she honked her horn. I was behind her and, well, let's just say it was not a good time of the month to piss me off.

gray? I've hear pink (as in, running the yellow pretty late) :-)

pedestrians ranting too? don't pedestrians break laws more often then everyone else combined??? by crossing when it says don't walk, crossing in the middle of the street, standing partially or fully in the street waiting for the lights to change. Running between cars when the traffic is stopped.

I bet the majority of peds that get clipped are the ones that look ONLY to avoid cars and proceed to cross DESPITE the fact that they don't have right of way till the sign says WALK. Then there's the even more clueless that don't even look down the street and proceed to walk just because the person infront of them has started walking.

I walk around alot aswell and have never been clipped by a bike, but then I don't automatically cross the street the second every car has passed which I think most peds just do out of habit.

Next time you get clipped or almost hit, check that walk sign to see whose fault it really is.
  • ____^^^ Agreed.

I walk around and break laws all the time (cross on red, middle of street, etc). I do look out for bikes and cars and anyone else coming first though. I've never been clipped. I keep my eyes open. There're a lot of people moving around in this city!!
  • I'm not saying that walkers don't ever wrongly step out in front of bikers, but you are fucking goofy if you think that many walkers don't get clipped or nearly clipped by bikers running red lights. I haven't been clipped, nor have I clipped anyone, but I have definitely NOT walked when it was my right to due to a biker deciding that they were going to run the light.
  • Pedestrians need to understand the city is changing and there are far more bikes out there these days. With gas prices the way they are it is only going to increase.

The walking-centric have to look out for everyone now. And just maybe not listen to their Ipods so damn high so they can't hear a warning bell!

People who listen to ipods while walking in the street are goofy. People who think using a warning bell gives them the right to run lights and have people jump out of their way are goofy too.
  • Basically, since neither pedestrians nor bicyclists are going to obey laws in New York City, the right of way should be as so:

    1. Bicylists
    2. Pedestrians
    3. Vehicles

And that means thay vehicles should always look out for pedestirans and bicylists, pedestrians should always look out for bicyclists, and bicyclists should look out for no one (except themselves).

For those of you who pass me on the road, this is why I ride slow in Manhattan. I almost hit a pedestrian today. She came out in the middle of the street, the cars had all stopped, so why bother to look if there is a bike coming? Then there was the jerk whose taxi let him out in the bike lane. Why bother to check to see if maybe there are bikes coming? Why would bikes be coming?

    Word!
  • For anyone who missed the fine print in my previous comment, both times i mentioned being clipped by bikes I was exactly where i was supposed to be as a pedestrian. I respect the rules of the very busy NY roads and i don't think that I should expect less of other people. Hello people...respect for everyone on the streets please!

Bullshit. Whoever _doesn't_ have the right of way and is breaking the law has the responsibility to make sure they aren't fucking with anyone who is following the law. If a pedestrian is crossing against the light, then they have the responsibility to make sure they aren't making a car or bike that has the right of way slam on their brakes. If a bike is running a light, then the biker has the responsibility to make sure that he isn't making pedestrians legally crossing the street leap out of his way, bell or no bell.
  • Daver, don't take her bait. She just wants to start an argument. Believe me, I fell for it once. ;)
