I'm SO done with Key Food on Washington
Subject: I'm SO done with Key Food on Washington
I've been going to these guys for as long as I've lived here (10 yrs). I have defended them on other threads as I've seen them modify and grow according to the needs of the neighborhood. But for the last few months (more, when I really think about it) I'm more and more disappointed to the point where I cannot shop there any longer. I'm shooting a letter to the corporate office, it may not be for any other reason than to get it off my chest.1.They have NOTHING in stock. Say, you make a request for a specific thing. For the most part, they have complied. Great, right? No, because its the LAST TIME you'll ever see that product again. You then have to go back to them and ask what's up. This can and has gone on for months.
2. They keep stuff in the back, for reasons I know not. Went yesterday and searched in vain for basil (c'mon its summer!!!!). I asked a worker and he had to go to the back to find it (why is it not out?!?!). He comes out with a HUGE container with a $4 price tag. I said I wanted half that. He said that's how it comes (B.S.- it's a clam shell container they make themselves in "the back"). So I bitch and get him to split it "only for you," they say.
Waited over 5 minutes, less than 10, no guy. I paid for my other things and left.
3. You know what? The meat dept IS shit. It DOES smell. I can never stomach buying any product that isn't hermetically sealed from that whole section in the back.
4. Attitude. I started out making jokes, became friends with the owners (one has persistently asked me out, to which I'm always nice, but I'd never). But, I can only be nice for so long before it just dawns on me that they seriously don't give two shits about their business. In the end, they get in their fancy stud mobiles and go to "the club." I asked one guy if they had ANY pride whatsoever in the work they do. He completely agreed with me but said he was the only one and he can't get through to the others. Whatever.
There are many more reasons, ones listed above are the more recent crop o' complaints, but I won't put you to sleep with my rants.
For my happy ending- went the other direction (CH south, yo) to the Associated on Franklin and it was nice! Big isles, CLEAN, they had basil!, not my brand of cat food, but a decent selection. Products also weren't stacked up to the ceiling like at Key Food (I have my climbing the freezers to get to the tp down like a mountain climber!) Did I mention that it was CLEAN?!?!?! I feel stupid that I never ventured down that way before (less of a scenic route, for sure), but I've learned my lesson the hard way and hopefully I will have many pleasant shopping experiences in the future.
Unless it's absolutely critical, I'm NEVER going to that other shithole again. They can go suck it.

I don't know about the Associated on Franklin but if it's not too far check out Foodtown at Brooklyn Ave and Fulton St. The place is gigantic and they have things I could never possibly imagine finding at Key Food. But yeah, Key Food sucks. Met isn't too bad but they have shorter hours.
-
Fulton is WAY too far for me, but thanks. One should not have to venture miles to get basic necessities.
-
Yeah I was disappointed with the Key Food on Washington, the C-Town a little futher up the street and even Fisher's on the corner. They're all pretty grody and their selection is definitely limited. So you're saying there's an Associate further south on Franklin that is decent? What's the cross street?
-
Franklin and Carroll Street. It's BIG, too. well, bigger than that shithole.
-
The one on Fulton almost on The corner of St james everything you could possibly want, the Met food on Vandy is not too shabby.
-
Try Western Beef on Empire and Washington. Very large, good prices ...but definately not high end products.
-
Too far for a walk and lug back of groceries. Not looking for a new place, folks, (got that already) just here to trash the old one.
Anyone else hate them as much as I do??? -
You are funny. Everyone keeps trying to be helpful, and you just want to trash talk! Most threads go the other way...

NOOOOO!!!!!! That Foodtown the worst place in the world besides the atlantic pathmark. I HATE IT MORE THAN WORDS CAN EVEN DESCRIBE. Fake ghetto ass trying to be fancy store with the bullshit olive bar with thousand year old bullshit and soy products are more $ than whole foods. FUCK THEM. NEVER AGAIN!! I would rather ride the train to whole foods with the prices they charge or even better go to fairway. -

The Met on Vandy is good, but when you're lugging cat food, bottles of seltzer, produce, whatnot, UPHILL, it's just too much.
For years now, I've always gone to certain places for certain things, and I still do that to a certain extent. But to have a place close by (Associated for me, Fisher's is a glorified bodega/Pioneer....don't even get me started on those slapdicks) that has most of my basic needs (shit, I really don't need much) is something that I've been holding in high value lately.
I mean, the bulk of my money (aside from rent) goes towards food, so my financial support of a local business should mean that I get those basic requirements from one place without a fucking hassle. -
I'm sorry to gloat but supermarkets are great here in bed stuy. Bravo on Nostrand and Fulton is cheap and excellent they even have specialty things like stock in a box. Then the Korean West Indian produce markets the bomb. Key Food on Nostrand and Monroe well decent too. I eat very well and cheap here.

The Associated on Franklin is the shit. I never knew there was another super market on Franklin until I walked around and found the doctors office and then The Associated cuz its a few feet away from it. It's only 2 streets away from me so I don't go any where else anymore. It's clean and well stocked and has everything I need. They even have a deli!! They also sell ground lamb which I love.
Hey Whatchuwant here's a link to their weekly circular if you don't get it delivered to your place.
