Suspicious Credit Card Activity at Scottadito in Park Slope — Brooklynian

Suspicious Credit Card Activity at Scottadito in Park Slope

Has anyone heard of any problems with credit card charges at Scottadito Osteria Toscana on Union Street in Park Slope?

I was at Scottadito on May 20 for an evening meal. Somehow, I managed to leave my credit card in the restaurant.

When I realized the card was missing a couple of days later I called the restaurant, and someone called Bradley told me they had the card and I could come and get it any time. My wife picked up the card a couple of days later.

I thought nothing of it until a few days ago when I checked my credit card statement and saw a $69 charge for the meal I had followed by a $474.15 charge a couple of days later.

I called the restaurant straight away and was soon contacted by a manager called Katherine, who said she was new having just replaced the old manager.

Katherine said she would look into the charge and apologized (insincerely) before giving me a brief lecture about how she would like to cut up credit cards that get left behind in restaurants.

I contacted my credit card company who canceled my card straight away.

The following day I received a voicemail from a woman called Rita who said she was Scottadito's bookkeeper. Rita said she would look into my problem.

One day later Rita called to explain that my card must have been swiped in error on a busy night. She offered to refund the $474.15 immediately. (When I told her Chase had canceled my card because of suspicious activity she told me I should find a different bank.)

By now I was a little suspicious. A $474 bill would have to be a pretty big table in a restaurant where entrees cost about $20. And I found it difficult to believe that someone could swipe my card by mistake.

I told Rita I wanted to speak to the owner. Rita told me the restaurant was owned by Nomidi Corp but she did not know who the owner was.

When pressed she admitted that she knew who the owner was but she said she "won't give out that information" and that she would get him to call me.

A little later she sent me an email showing the charge had been refunded to my card and I replied saying I still wanted to hear from the owner.

That was about four or five days ago. Needless to say, there has been no phone call.

i find it strange that the owner does not seem concerned about this.

Has anyone else had a problem with this restaurant?

And does anyone know who the owner is?

  • I'm not familiar with that prices at that specific restaurant, but the charge might not be too high if its a bunch of heavy drinkers. -J
  • It could be a restaurant charge-if it was a large party or something.

Also, I don't know about you, but, once I noticed my credit card missing, i wouldn't have waited a few days to go get it-i would have run over there immediately for it-or, had it canceled the second i realized i left it anywhere!

that's as may be, but there's still no reason the card should have been charged.

hope you do get to talk to the owner.

Well, of course not! I am just saying that I would never have trusted my card sitting around a place for days and I hope the OP has learned from this experience!

If you really want to talk to the owner I would start throwing around the words "investigation" and "news teams", I bet that would get the owner to call you!
  • There's also the possibility that the card may have been used by an unscrupulous person/persons who found your lost card before the staff did days after you lost track of it.

Also if the owner/s are part of some faceless corp. w/ mulitple holdings then the person most responsinle for addressing your problem/concerns may just be Rita the bookkeepr or the manager.

Kind of like when you bitch at the cable company you're not gonna get a call from Time Warner's CEO.

Agreed- chances are the owner is "offsite" so even if you did speak with them, they'd have very little to say back other than "sorry." Fact is, your money was refunded, you got your card, what more is there to talk about?

Maybe it had something to do with the old manager you mentioned.
  • I am glad I got my money back and I might have let the matter rest there if I had had a better explanation/experience with the staff, whose behavior (barely an apology, defensive and refusing to let me speak to the owner) made me think there might be more to this than just a mistake.

And yes, the recent departure of the old manager did make me think that there was a possibility of a link with my additional credit card charge.

Rita told me she thought Nomidi Corp owned two restaurants. I felt certain, in such a case, that she would be able to put me in touch with the owner.

Under the circumstances I wanted to make doubly sure (a) that the owner knew what was going on in his/her restaurant and (b) that anyone in the neighborhood who had been to the restaurant lately, particularly those who had left their card, checked their statement carefully.
  • That stinks! No matter who the owner is, someone there swiped your card, and there is no way they would have done that unknowningly. I find a $400- charge hard to take in stride at that particular place.

Well, the new person is probably in the middle of a shit storm as is common when new manager comes into a restaurant, so maybe she didn't know what to say. I mean, a sincere apology doesn't take much effort, but...
As for the owner thing: more often than not owners like that don't EVER want to talk to patrons and they will never allow an employee to give out their contact info. Thats why the manager is there- so the owner doesn't have to deal with little things like customers. Obnoxious, I know, but its true. All they want to talk about is money.
  • When they first opened they made it sound like the place was a "long-time dream" of the owner. It certainly didn't seem like the place was owned by a corporation then. Maybe it's changed hands.

Scottadito was excellent when it first opened. By the time we had xmas eve dinner there (2006), it had fallen downdowndown. I haven't been there since.
  • funny how often threads like these are started by a newb who then disappears and whose lifetime posts are all contained in 1
"this business screwed me over" thread".

you got a refund - problem solved.

or are u expecting a video replay with commentary by vin scully?

I worked in the customer service line for a while- the OP sounds typical of many who just want to yell at anyone who'll listen. And when that rep reaches their max bitching for the day, they then want someone higher to yell at.

    Just sayin'

I've never been to dinner there, but I've found myself going there a lot for brunch lately. The brunch is reasonably priced. You get pasta dish options and in general I've never have a bad meal. Not amazing, but worth the price. I've tried the french toast, 2 different pastas, and the egg benedict. All have been good.
Never had a problem with charges and the wait staff is (for some reason) super nice to us. That's just my experience so far.
  • Maybe I'll try the brunch once I'm not pregnant. I don't want to miss the unlimited mimosas. ;)
  • Nothing like some good ole rampant speculation to spice up the board today... thanks everyone.
