Cheesy as it may be, I've found some cool unique stuff at the union sq market and in soho. If you can find places where the actual artist is selling stuff you can usually get a good deal and a lot of the pieces are one of a kind.

Well, here are a few ideas...
First Thursday Gallery walks in DUMBO
http://www.thenewyorkcitytraveler.com/dumbo-first-thursday-gallery-walk/
First Fridays at RePop (Washington Avenue between BQE and Navy Yard in Wallabout neighborhood, North of Clinton Hill)
http://www.repopny.com (see Events section)
Casual open shows (on the wall) at cafes like K-Dog and Dunebuggy in Prospect Lefferts Gardens (currently showing works by a really excellent graphic novel / comic book artist Wesley Gunn).
And then there are the seasonal open-studio festivals and walks such as the following:
July 26-August 17: BWAC Summer Show in Red Hook (all price ranges, great place to start)
http://www.bwac.org
September 26-28: DUMBO's 12th Annual Art Under The Bridge Festival
http://www.dumboartscenter.org/festival.html
October 18-19: 11th Annual Gowanus Artist Studio Tour (A.G.A.S.T.)

I am certain Williamsburg and Chelsea have similar outings, just too lazy to find 'em after typing all this (hah). -
You can also check out this site

I find this collaboration to be so interesting and visually stimulating.
I guess I should add that I know and really like the artist and her SO is a mod here on brooklynian. -
Just followed a link off the Jessica Rowe site to the Gallery 10G site (as Jessica Rowe was part of a prior show), and really like what they have going on there.

From the current "PSYCHOGEOGRAPHY" show...
Check out the art from the other shows, there is a pretty good variety of works there.
About Gallery 10G:Gallery10G.com wrote: Gallery 10G was started in 2004 by Jill Fortunoff who graduated from Sotheby’s Institute in London with a Master’s Degree in Post War & Contemporary Art. The gallery focuses on representing the work of emerging artists primarily in the area of photography and painting.
Very cool.
Gallery 10G is a stepping stone for emerging artists to help them get more exposure and recognition in the art world. Working with these young talents allows me to continue my ongoing desire to keep my finger on the pulse of the ever expanding art world. My goal is to help to further my artists’ careers while attaining recognition in my own right as a respectable art dealer/consultant with a great eye.
One of the goals of Gallery10g is to introduce young professionals to the contemporary art world and encourage them to start collecting art at an early age for their homes and/or offices. I coordinate gallery visits, openings, art tours and special events to ensure that young people are capable of learning more about contemporary, cutting edge art.
The Pierogi gallery in Williamsburg is also linked from her site, and that has a great looking Summer show based on following the individual artist links there:

I love your art - bought a drawing at your show at ToD and gave it to some friends for their new kitchen. saw it just yesterday while dining at their place - still love it.
