Preschool Parents -- Help!

anonymous
edited November -1 in Park Slope
I'm starting to look at preschools for my child and was wondering if anyone knew anything about the following preschools:

Union Temple
Huggs Day School
Bean Sprouts
John Edward Bruce Center
Montessori of New York International
Sunflower Academy
Maple Street School

Thanks for your help and insight.

  • I was very happy with Beansprouts when my kids went there, but that was several years ago. It's definitely worth a look. Not on your list, but I've heard the Free Space (think that's the name) is really great, also Roots and Wings. Both in Park Slope, but I don't know exactly where. Good luck.
  • My friend's daughter goes to Union Temple, and they're very happy with it. They like the student-teacher ratio and the enthusiasm of the teachers. It seems like a very loving place. Worth a look, at least.

Also, you might want to consider TLC on 8th Avenue and 18th Street, especially if you could request Rebecca, who is a fantastic teacher. A lot of theirs are inclusion classes, combining general-ed kids and students receiving some kind of therapeutic service. It's a very valuable experience for both sides, I think.
  • Okay, I was going to PM users about this thread, but I don't think I'll be able to keep up.

Yawn. The person who originally posted this has now changed her story and says that she really is looking for a school. However, she has consistently spammed the boards and isn't a registered user, so you can make your own conclusions about whether it is worthwhile to respond.
  • I don't know about whether you're doing book related research or not, but could you please stop post the same thing in 5 different places?! DH keeps me from work too much as is it, and you're exacerbating the problem. :)
  • sent one child to beansprouts for a year. was reasonably happy -- liked the teachers very much; the administration, though, leaves something to be desired. They can be unresponsive to parents and I had problems with their fee structure. (They charged burdensome amounts of advance fees and deposits; also, there were frequent surcharges for activities, projects and materials that were less onerous than annoying -- as if it was sort of a back-door way of avoiding making the tuition higher while still charging more money. Just increase your materials fee and pay it out of that!) IMHO, some of their rules -- like forbidding any toys, etc., related to superheroes -- were laughable. (My son entered the school knowing or caring nothing about superheroes but ended up picking up a vast knowledge of them from other kids by the time he left, which we fine with me. Personally, I think it's ridiculous to try to repress kids' curiosity for things like that.)

But my child was happy there and you could do far worse.
  • Thanks for the heads up -- I hope that at least the info is useful to other users browsing the message boards.
  • Subject: How about Brooklyn Free Space!

All the other schools you mentioned are nice and pretty good, but my son S... just enrolled in Brooklyn Free Space and is having a fantastic time!!!

I can't say anything negative only wonderul things!!!

My son as made astronomical advances since enrolling. He’s talking, using vocabulary me and my wife have never used before and forming full length sentences!!. Unfortunately when he enrolled, he was not potty trained, but within 2 weeks He was fully potty trained!! The environment is nurturing and positive at all times. The teachers are GREAT!!!. I really can’t stop talking about the school and the staff.
