la taqueria getting greedy — Brooklynian

la taqueria getting greedy

putz
edited November -1 in Park Slope
in addition to the new bar scene at la taqueria, it seems they have raised their prices. outrageous california now costs $10 even (with tax). its good, but seems like a lot for what it is. but at the same time, where else can one sit down for a meal in park slope for $10 or less? besides pizza, seriously, where?

  • My friend and I ate at la taqeuria and were really unimpressed, especially after some glowing reviews. Maybe it was just an off night but we got delivery and it was just ok.
  • i ate in at the new la taq last night with two friends and we all thought the food was terrific. the new decor and upscale feel is quite enjoyable too. i'll be back for sure.
  • It's hard to say, given that everyone is coping with higher fuel/air conditioning $/transporting of food/food prices, etc..I dunno what to think...
  • I'd say in between dealing with PS rents, rising oil prices and major grain/cereal disasters, $10 is cheap.
  • Yes.

La Taqueria's bar space is fine, but I can definitely live without it. I ate in the previous space and never felt as if needed to be fixed up. Was there really a need?

I fear another favorite restaurant, Hunan Delight on Union Street and 6th Avenue, is following the trend of less food for more money. Come to think of it, they had a renovation too. I was fine with their old space, serving sizes, and prices.

Has Oshima, the sushi place on 7th Avenue that was renovated, increased its prices too?

Even if the rising menu prices are not the restaurant's fault, price increases will make me think twice about getting a taco since my income is not increasing at the same frequency. Maybe it's time to explore tacos of 5th avenue and 45th Street.

not about need, but that margins are even better on alcohol than on burritos.

After a few shots of tequila any feel is enjoyable.
  • just fyi...i did not at all find the portions at the new la taqueria to be small in any way. i was STARVING after walking around ps for hours and by the time we sat down, we inhaled 2 bowls of chips and salsa (they offered a 3rd which we accepted with our meal) and then the enchiladas came out. there were two of them, them were spiced perfectly and they were large. i left that place totally satisfied, and not in the least bit in that post-mexican sometimes gross feeling way.

oh and they also came out with a healthy serving of rice and black beans for the 3 of us to share...the beans were delicious!

total price for each of us was 20 bucks which was a beer, entree, tax and tip. i don't find that outrageous for a nice dinner out. for every night...no way. now the bar area, i will definitely hit up again soon. i was impressed with the HUGE list of tequilas they now have.

while i agree that the space didn't need to be renovated, we should at least give their new business model an honest shot, and if it's not a success, then we move on from it. they are a small business just trying to get by and i think they add a lot to the dining options on this rather bleak section of northern 7th avenue...

btw, i think they did a nice job with the outside as well...new burgundy awning, they painted the wood and trash cans black and the outside benches have been removed for a more slick entrance, although it looks like they added some new benches at cousin john's next door (because a lot of people do like to sit out there, i've noticed).

ALSO, i was in oshima the other night (love that place) and it was a rainy dreary night and i was bored so i made chit chat with the owner (i think?) and told her how nice i thought the renovation was. she said...oh...thank you...did you see the patio yet. i had not, so i went out to take a look and it is GORGEOUS! it's done really well..better than the inside even, i think. there is a lot of bamboo and they did this really great rock formed koi pond with glass over part of the floor so you are literally walking right over the fish as they swim. fun for kids, i'd think. and kids at heart...

i asked her if they were doing well and she said yes.

i love their oshima salad and the seared tuna is great too. everything i've ever had from there has been super fresh and tasty.

you may still feel the same way, but try going there.
or if you live close by, pickup and hustle home if you prefer.

to me, any mexican food delivered really loses alot in the trip.
maybe i just like it hot hot .
  • Went to the new, improved La Taq on Saturday......they've definitely raised their game significantly. whoever said the portions were small has to have the biggest appetite i've ever seen. i looked down at my plate after eating about half my barbacoa enchiladas and actually felt horrified by the amount of meat i had just consumed. it was A LOT of food.

i'd say best Mexican in the neighborhood at the moment which, of course, isn't saying much but, in this case, it is.
  • haven't tried barrio yet, but yes...i agree...best mexican in the neighborhood for sure...

the food is closer to a rosa mexicano than it is one of the mexican places down in sunset park...

although both types are great depending on one's mood...
  • A new Mexican place opened up a few months ago on 4th and Bergen - Bigotes (it means moustache in Spanish, I know it looks a bit odd...)

The food is great, really cheap, and the guys who run the place are very nice. Try their bistec tacos, any quesadilla, and their tres leches cake is fantastic. My husband and I have made a meal for 2 there for under $15.

They do deliver, and they also have places to sit, but we usually pick up and take it home.

I'm a Southern California transplant so I know good Mexican, and Bigotes is about as close to it as I've had in NYC.

You need to get to Tacos Nuevos Mexico or El Jirasol Bakery on Fifth and 21st for good Mexican. Nothing wrong with La Taq or Rachels (I order from there all of the time--side note--why are they so stingy with the salsas?) but places south of 9th are where the people who deliver your La Taq go to eat Mexican food (go even further down Fifth Ave into the 40s and 50s and it'll be like a trip to Rosarito).
  • can't disagree with what other are saying about places like Tacos Nuevos Mexico. i'll change my disclaimer to "best upscale Mexican in the neighborhood."
  • I've been to Barrio twice, both times it has been an enjoyable meal. It is not what I would call traditional Mexican cuisine but it is tasty. The salsa and sides are served in microscopic proportions but at least they taste good. The guacamole is satisfying and not too limey, a problem I often encounter. A bit pricey for what you get, but the Mexican choices are very limited in the slope..

Off the topic, I had a friend apply to wait tables at Barrio... they seriously gave him a written quiz on wine pairings, mexican cuisine, and the best part, asked in a question for him to list the names of the food critics for the new york times, post, and magazine.
  • Chiles & Chocolate is very close to the real thing. Their chicken mole tamales are delish.

This is good information. Thanks. :)
  • I'm totally craving La Taq now. Phooey on you all!
  • Subject: Nearly in Tears After Dinner

I never thought I would say this about an old favorite but I don't think I will ever go back to La Taq again after my recent dinner. The menu is NOT slightly different as I was led to believe, but it is COMPLETELY different. I used to look forward to a satisfying meal here after a long day, slipping right into a regular table, and always having difficulty deciding between at least 5 dishes. Tonight, it took me 15 minutes to choose something that looked remotely appealing. I finally chose pork tacos. It was the worst meal. Pineapple on puerco (that was tough meat) seems so wrong. The black beans and rice on the side had no taste. The chile rellenos are not like they used to be either. They are made with mushrooms and raisins. I want to cry. This was my kitchen away from home. The only redeeming features are the murals, bar is nice too, and most importantly - seeing Edgar the superb busboy/waiter we have grown to adore.

I wanted to root for the owner, really I did but please, please, please bring back the old menu - or at least some shorter version of it.

I WANT MY LA TAQ BACK!!!!!

    Boohoo.
  • you've never had pineapple with pork on a taco? they're far from the only place in NYC serving them.
  • J0518 wrote: you've never had pineapple with pork on a taco? they're far from the only place in NYC serving them.
I'm not from here and we just don't mess with pork that way. I just like the simple Mexican menu, that's all.
  • J0518 wrote: I just like the simple Mexican menu, that's all.
Tacos al Pastor is probably the most popular taco in Mexico. It's rotisserie cooked pork with a pineapple sitting on top of the skewer so the juice drips down onto the pork. The cooked pork is sliced off with some pieces of pineapple and served on corn tortillas, topped with cilantro and pico de gallo. Simple and delicious.
  • Who makes the best breakfast burrito? I remember going to Taq years ago and being shocked they didn't have them! Do they now? Who does?

Now this I would be willing to try. It sounds much yummier than pineapple compote on pork. I really do love La Taq and the folks there and didn't want to be harsh earlier, but I have to call it as it is.
