Just went tonight...very disappointing. Or rather, perhaps I should say it was just unremarkable. Prices are better than Il Torchio but food isn't even close. I actually thought Il Torchio's food was very very good the past 6 months.
-
piratesofwaverly what didn't you like about il torchio?
we haven't been since it changed owners or whatever, but we always liked the food at il torchio. some of the servers were mediocre, but the main woman who was usually the pseudo-hostess was always good. -
Il Torchio is closed already? Damn, I never made it in for a try. Bummer.
-
well, the restaurant never closed, just changed owners. I'm not sure how (or if) the menu changed.
-
how many italian restaurants we really need in such a small area? 3 is too many. all there is is mostly italian and french :?
-
Given the popularity of Italian food in New York? I think 3 is about right.
All in all I'm really pleased with the variety that is offered on the Myrtle Avenue corridor. French, mexican, chinese, japanese, soul food, diner, various fusion resaurants, italian... -
To answer your question, boygabriel, I found Il Torchio to be overreaching a bit. Like they needed to refine things, perhaps by shortening the menu and focussing on making a few things well, instead of a bunch of things ok. That's just my opinion, of course.
Anyway, they seemed to do such a good job setting the place up - I love the interior - that I figured it was just a matter of time for them to work out the kinks in their food, and now it seems they've addressed that by outsourcing the whole operation. I'm hoping these new people can nail it.
On an only semi-related note, anyone try that new italian on dekalb, caffe e vino? -
Locanda is not your typical Italian ( assuming that's one of the 3 you're citing): it's Tuscan. Most italian restaurants are N Italian. In that arena we have Il Torchio (or Anima) and...what's the other? I can't think of it. Scopella maybe? I've never cared for Locanda Vini although I understand that that puts me in the minority.
We happened to LOVE Il Torchio. We went around 6 weeks after it's opening to let them work out the kinks and had such a pleasant experience that we started going back regularly. Last time we went I found my dinner to be somewhat unremarkable and the hostess, a woman whom I'd never seen there before, was VERY intense and rather brusque and was barking orders at the staff. It wasn't until later that I'd heard that Il Torchio had changed hands. We haven't been back since.
I think CH/FG could ABSOLUTELY support another Italian restaurant. One along the lines of Frank/Supper in the EV would likely be packed; Italian food is one of the most popular 'ethnic' foods across the board. -
you might be surprised but i actually kinda like Graziellas. certain things. they are somewhat vegetarian friendly. they have the best fennel salad i ever had. i would order 2 at a time. also good broccoli rabe and in winter quite a few vegetarian soups. also their lunch pasta specials a real decent price. did not like their "panini" at all and never had their pizza but other people said it was real good brick oven.
how come nobody ever mentions Cino's, the original Italian restaurant of the hood? Yes its still there. -
Oh yeah- Graziella's! I like it, too; the pizza is pretty good!
Cino's, however, is no longer there- Bonita is in Cino's spot now. -

Damn. I can't even keep up with all of it. Last time I checked it was there.

Yeah thats right I remember Bonita now. I even went once and it's straight garbage. I remember it exactly now I had the worst and most expensive chile relleno I ever had in my life and got real vex and left still starving and ripped off and went home and ordered real ones from Castro's. Thats why I blocked it from my mind.
I take it this Greene whatever is going to open where June and Sol were?
Same owner?
Also does anyone know where Christian of Liquors and then Bodegas is? -
So anyway, back to Anima...
I didn't go when it was called Il Torchino, but saw the menu posted outside, and have taken a look at the menu here. It looks like the average prices have dropped slightly -- anyone able to do a cost comparison?
