Foot Soldiers Street Cleaning — Brooklynian

Foot Soldiers Street Cleaning

Has anyone ever heard of or used the services of this organization: http://www.pr-g.org/what_we_do/foot_soldiers/index.html. It is apparently a program that pays young people in the neighborhood to remove litter, leaves, snow, weeds, and trash from front yards, stairways, and sidewalks. Their mission is to "eliminate teenage idleness in Bed-Stuy and similar NYC neighborhoods through education, recreation and partnerships."

They primarily work in the residential blocks of Bed Stuy, but I was talking with a coordinator over there about possibly expanding their program to the commercial strip on Nostrand in Crown Heights. Fight as people may about what types of stores should be on Nostrand, I think we can pretty much all agree that Nostrand is filthy and needs to be cleaned up.

FYI -- apparently the Foot Soldiers only service some parts of Crown Heights, depending on the zip, but not all. But before I go making phone calls, just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with the organization.

Either way, it sounds like a great program!

yes i see their signs over in my area, which is nostrand & madison. i have seen them cleaning up. (not recently, maybe 2 mos ago)
  • Any idea how they are different (more or less expensive) realtive to the Doe Fund Street teams that BIDs sponsor? BTW, this was a very valuable post to share - I will call to followup and see about their services as well.
  • My guess would be they are cheaper. They are essentially paying high school kids to work vs. the Doe Fund which supports a homeless to work program that probably has far more expenses.
