Harrowing tale of a mugging in Fort Greene — Brooklynian

Harrowing tale of a mugging in Fort Greene

Just in case you're thinking that only Crown Heights has muggers, check out this harrowing tale of modern-day vigiliantes:

I want to share with you an incident that happened this morning around
10:25AM. I was walking on So. Oxford St. between Lafayette and
Fulton. I was close to Lafayette when I heard a woman screaming and
saw a young
man run across the street to the west side of Oxford and toward
Fulton.
Suddenly he turned and came back past me. I turned and watched him
when suddenly another young man caught him and the two exchanged
punches.
I began to yell thief. He then got away to the north side of
Lafayette,
but we (the puncher, the young woman and me- I continued to yell
thief,
thief, thief) followed him and were joined by a number of other people
at the
intersection of So. Portland and Lafayette. Several of us had called
the police and after some brief skirmishing and yelling, they showed
up.
The young woman was very upset even though it turned out that nothing
had
been stolen. It seems that she fought him off somewhere east of So.
Oxford
on or near Lafayette and then followed after him. I was happy that we
got
him and hope that the word will get out that people in our
neighborhood help
each other. Also hope the police can get him for attempted purse
snatching, but at least he now has a record.

I think times are getting tougher. Food, gas, housing are getting
more expensive and bad times can bring out the worst in bad people.
We
all have to be more careful. I could not believe this was happening at
10:25AM!
Thanks.
Roy

  • That's my daugther's block. What did she look like. Please PM me or post on the board. I can't reach her on the phone, so naturally, I'm concerned.
    Thanks
  • While this sounds like it was pretty upsetting (I don't know that I'd go so far as calling it "harrowing" but that's neither here nor there), the original poster makes it clear that this woman wasn't hurt and that she didn't even end up having anything stolen. Dakotas way, your daughter will call you back eventually.
  • I understand your concern, but really I think your daughter is fine. The person said that the woman had nothing stolen and was able to follow him for several blocks.

Your daughter is probably out going about her day-to-day business very much unaware of either the mugging or you trying to reach her. I'm sure she'll call you soon.

Yah, so how many were on Oxford between Lafayette and Fulton this morning?

Capt. Planet didn't specify in his post when he received the email he was copying and pasting, but it clearly wasn't this morning, since it said the incident happened at 10:25 am and he posted it at 7:25 am today. So it was at least yesterday.

All that aside, there are still enough people in NYC that the chances that this was Dakotas Way's daughter, even though it was the same block, are pretty small. Let's not panic unnecessarily.
  • It's the perfect time to panic!!!
  • Thanks everyone for your positive notes. Just being a Mom, I guess. Sorry, I had to run to work and just got home. I did get in touch with my daughter and she's fine. But she never heard anything and was home when this happened. I did see mention there is a time lapse. Any idea how long the lag time is from posting until it shows on the board?

And I love the neighborhood she's in in Ft.Greene. Thanks once again for your indoctrination into living in the city since she moved there last year.
I see why she loves living in Brooklyn so much. Good people.
  • there is no significant time lag after posting.
  • So, that's what happened. I work at home and came out of my apartment for a bagel and saw people clustered around w/ cops & everything. But I had work deadlines so couldn't ponder it much.

You know, it's interesting--Ft. Greene is supposed to be so safe now, but it could have been safer when I first moved here, because there it was more insular, people seemed to know each other in a different way so they didn't dump where they lived.

This is just speculation. I've lived here for almost 12 years and have seen major, major changes!
