Best Worst of...everything

Thought this would be a cool list for the Heights/Slope area. Sort of a mini-Village Voice issue.

Here's some:

Best Pork Fried Rice: Hunan Delight, 6th and Union St. Just insane fried rice.
Best and Most Consistent Spicy Tuna Roll: Blue Ribbon Sushi. It's always good. With cucumber too.
Best Product/Worst Service Combo: Half
Best Lunch Bang for Buck: Trattoria Mulino, 9.95 gets you app, entree, glass of wine. Plus their awesome bread.
Best Place to Buy Fruit: D&Y on Flatbush next to the Van Helsing movie theater. Those South African oranges, the Washington State two-week raspberries --- rockin.

I really like VideoEdge. It's not much to look at (the appearance of the store, that is), but they have a decent selection, the price is right, and the employees are more than competent... can't say that much for the dunces that stand behind the counter at BlockBuster. I don't know if it's still the same, but I could never get through a line at BlockBuster in under 15 minutes, whether there were 2 or 10 people ahead of me.

I fully agree. They do have a fairly impressive selection for such a small and grungy-looking store. I really like the workers too--they remember us when we come in and are always friendly and helpful.

It would be really great if DVD series could be kept for more than one night, though. Trying to squeeze three or four eps in at a time is really doing a number on my social life, sleep, and housework :?
  • i agree that video edge is the best around, far better than blockbusters. but i wonder why our hood, given the demos here, can't have a really great video store like kim's in the east village. dvd's don't take up much space, so that can't be the reason there's not a better selection. all the recent pop flix are there, but try to find something before 1980 or foreign or even recent indies.
  • Best Falafel and Shoawarma: Sam's BBQ & Vegetarian (Catty Corner from the Q station -- Carlton and Park). I worship their falafel and their swoawarma is second best to Mamoun's near NYU. Also, it is clean and they are nice guys who want to make you happy it seems. Can't recommend it enough. I wish Zagat's or something of that ilk would pick up on this place. it is that good, IMHO.
  • Best pharmacy ever: Thriftway
Not only do they have outstanding service with perscriptions (they stayed open late for me once when a doctor called in a script at closing time), they also are the least expensive.

All it needs is for you and a few other people to write it in. Anyone can register and rate restaurants online. Plus you get a free copy of Zagat's.

Totally agree. Great falafel, all homemade middle-eastern food, and great price too!
  • i'm so glad someone commented on sam's. i haven't ventured in on my way out of the Q yet. will do so ASAP for good falafel!
  • Best Shakes: I don't know what it's called, but its on Prospect Place and Flatbush, next to a bodega.

They have interesting ingredients (ginger), the guy is very nice, and the shakes are delicious.

Also, has anybody tried the avocada with mint mayo sandwhich at Maha's? Great place.
  • Whoops, that was me that just posted as guest. Sorry, new to the boards and trying to figure everything out.

    :D

Actually, one of the reasons I like them so much is because I think they DO have a good selection of old, foreign, and indie films. I've rented more foreign and indie stuff in the past two years than in my whole life before that combined, probably, because they mix it all in together with the new releases, so you don't have to "be in the mood" to go check out the foreign section or whatever...it's all right there for impulse renting :) I do think it's kind of badly organized in there, though. If you're looking for a specific movie, you'll almost certainly have to ask where it is.
  • so Sam's is.......good. wow. i thought that was going to have disaster written all over it. thanks for the tip.

well hold up a minute... i want to like sam's and will give them another chance, but i haven't been impressed so far. i've never seen real lamb (not the processed gyro stuff) on the rotisserie, and the chicken i had last week was awful - dry and super salty. just bad luck??
  • Yes, I agree, Sam's is great. Not perfect...but close. Rumor has it that the owner makes everything on-site, so it's fresh. I can personally say that I've been overcome by the delicious aroma on the way to and from the Q.

    Yum.

You sure that wasn't el carneviento?

Seriously. I came off the Q yesterday and almost floated following the sweet smell of baked chicken, but I had my own good food at home and I resisted.
