a lot of drugs on dean
hey, i'm a former poster but i haven't posted in a long while. i've seen some disturbing things in the neighborhood recently and wanted to give people a heads-up.
a few weeks ago i was walking home from the subway and saw someone throw a backpack out of an apartment window on dean street b/w nostrand and bedford to a man standing below. he caught it, walked down the block, and met another man. i walked directly next to them (they didnt seem to care) and saw the first guy line up 4-5 ziploc sandwich bags, each about 1/3 full of white powder.
yesterday, same place, same two guys, except this time about 15-20 (literally) of the same sized bags were lined up along the curb in front of a car. again, this are ziploc sandwich bags 1/3-full of white powder. i'm no drug expert, but i think this could be A LOT of money (like 10s of thousands?).
this is in broad daylight around rush hour. there are kids playing in the street. i just thought this was worth reporting.

to be quite honest, i'm a bit nervous about it. this seems pretty major and i've seen at least one of these guys around my neighborhood just walking around.
im sure one of the cops on this board will see this thread. that's enough for me. -
Yeah, that's pretty dismal, especially if it's so blatant. I'm not an expert either but I don't think the amount you described is anything to scoff at either. Although I haven't had any major problems with the neighborhood I do try to avoid Dean, especially late at night, just because it's very empty and desolate in certain parts. I do live near Dean and New York though which isn't so bad (actually there are two churches there which are always active which helps).

actually, that block (dean bw nostrand and bedford) is one of the nicest in my area. beautiful rowhouses and no garbage on the ground.

The more empty part of Dean at night that you are thinking of dapearl9 is further west, like past Franklin, methinks.

Yeah although I think it's near Franklin too but I may be mistaken. It's not too bad during the day but I'll go south to St. Marks if I have to at night, or if the schedule's right just take the Bergen or Dean St. buses depending on which direction I'm going.

You know, funny you should mention it- I was walking to a lurker friend of mine house (who lives on Dean btwn Nostrand and Bedford) but on Franklin I've been seeing some people who do not fit in. One guy looked like he drove up straight from Virginia: cowboy hat and boots, straggly, not some hipster coyboy, this guy was the realy McCoy. Then, I saw this punk couple (piercings up the wazoo, dishelved, not resident-types). They were all looking around like, "where's this place again?" kinda looking.
Also similiar in that they were STRUNG OUT. They were nasty, dirty, and emaciated. There has GOT to be a heroin spot around there somewhere and more than a few people know about it if they're coming from other parts.... -

But that aside I expect people to care about their neighborhood and their greater surroundings in general. It is easy to turn a blind eye and say, "Oh well," that's how it is," but I expect people to want to try to be aware of where they live and try to make it a better place. There aren't evil people out there looking to intentionally make the world a worse place, normal people practicing apathy does that better than they ever could. -

sorry, didn't realize i should just shrug at the sight of upwards of a pound of heroin or cocaine lying on the sidewalk.

That's not drugs it's RAT POWDER. Two exterminators have lived on that block for years. They have treated most all of the houses in the neighborhood with those ziplock bags. I still have a couple of extra bags myself.
Thanks to them our block is rat free. No need to call the cops on this one. -

Ok, ok- lkr contacted me- it seems that there is an old timer in the hood who does indeed, speak to his neighbors via his 4th floor window and hooks them up with, ahem, rat poison. He's been doing it for years...
That doesn't change Franklin Ave or the junkies I've been spotting. -

that is so weak... "why you move here then?", would your answer be to just let drug sellers run rampant and violent crime to continue, just 'cuz. give me a break. "why you move here then?" look if you want to live in a neighborhood where you don't know if you'll make it home in one piece or if you'll get caught in crossfire from gang members running drugs, then power to you but i don't care if it's crown heights or westchester, the violence and drug activity are not okay. stop thinking about yourself and start thinking about your community... -
