when you born? bet you i older than you.
True dat, son.
...but no one here's tryin' to save shit.
And for the record, some of us didn't "just arrive here." Some of us watched you grow up.
The mere fact that you're asking means you're not.
sorry you 77 years old and so bitter
Ahem- not old (77-yeeks!). Not bitter. Thanks for playing. -

OK lets say you're right - drug dealing and the crime and violence associated w/ it have been here forever.
Would you like it to stop? I would. So would a lot of old-timers. So would a lot of new-comers. So we should stop it, right?
Do you want to stop it? Or would living in a neighborhood not plagued w/ crime and violence make you to much of a wuss? If you wanna live a crime-ridden area - how about YOU move to where the "action" is.
Of course in a few years people will move into your new hood who don't like all the dealing and violence and they'll stop it and then - GASP - where will you move then?!? -

This isn't about "whitey trying to change the world." This is about people being proud of where they live. I live in Brooklyn because I want to live in Brooklyn, not Vermont.
People could just as easily say to you - if you want 24-hour drug traffic and cops not doing anything about it, maybe Columbia is a more appropriate living choice for you. -

guessing QC means Colombia.

I meant Columbia the South American country. -
which is to say, Colombia.

There is no need to be a weenie about it. If you haven't figured it out by now, read sweet tea's posts. -

I am not being a "weenie" as you say. If one is to make such hostile, derogatory and stereotypical statements they should at least spell the name of the freaking country correctly.
Now as for Colombia only certain areas are drug areas. I have been to high end resort areas there that would put any 5 star thing in this country to shame with wealthy classy people from all over the world.
*it is a good idea to know what one is talking about before one posts* -

You are so being weenie because you knew perfectly well what was meant, and rather than disagree with it and point out the misspelling, you posted multiple messages of pointless tripe. _That_, my good sir (or madam,) is being a weenie. -
In defense of Guest, I have to say that I understand (kinda, didn't grow up here but..) where he/she's coming from.
Imagine growing up here- drugs are a fact of life and being a kid, you can't fight all the crazy shit that goes on around you. After a while, you do get hard from living city life (as a former teacher, I couldn't believe how quick those kids grew up).
Now imagine coming to this board and seeing "white people" (many colors on this board, I know, but people don't always see that) complain about the nabe. Getting defensive is not a completely unusual or irrational response. -

How productive do you expect a guest poster to be? Or any poster for that matter? -
Also in defense of Guest, whose expressed frustrations inspired the following today:

But I must say that I do give serious credit and respect to those who speak out and act up to make for safer streets. -

the word "weenie" is not in my vocabulary and quite frankly sucks. that being said, i thought she was talking about Columbia street. Then when the correct spelling of the country was posted I got it but given her massive attitude, I would say that if there is a "weenie" it would be she. -

Well, this "weenie" WAS actually planning on thanking people for correcting her mistake until she read what you wrote above.
Actually, I will still thank Sweet Tea. And all I can say, fivefifths, is that if caring about the community and refusing to get bent out of shape over a god-damned TYPO makes me a "weenie," then you can draw me a mustard bath, baby. -

Fair enough.
I'm not a Colombia expert, but I would say on the one side that it is reported that 80% of cocaine comes from there, supporting her point. On the flip side, regarding the comment about cops there not doing anything about it, I seem to recall quite a lot of international enforcement support pouring into there in recent years (decades?) in order to assist local efforts to combat it.
That being said, I would think that just as it isn't fair to judge a country only on its drug areas, it probably isn't fair to judge it based only on its five star resorts either. -
daver wrote:
True. All I am saying is there is alot more to Colombia than cocaine. You wouldn't want the US judged by the rest of the world based on its drug spots/trade alone now would you?

*sigh* Okay, let's get this over with.
No, I have not been to ColOmbia. I have, however, been to ColUmbia, which was a very nice town in Connecticut.
And I respect your experience that there are five-star resorts, however, given the fact that a large number of drug cartels are based there, I would question the funding for those resorts.
However, I'm sure you'd be more than happy to enlighten us more about the nation of Colombia -- at the expense of discussing matters in Crown Heights -- which clearly means that you're really just looking to have the last word, so I'm going to just go ahead and let you have it. Knock yourself out. -

At risk of perpetuating this, I would offer that it is pretty clear that the real issue wasn't with the misspelling.
And let me add, regarding the mustard bath, ew.
Really,
ew. -
Mod here
Just a gentle reminder to stay on topic. We've got almost a full page of posts about 1) the proper spelling of either a street in Red Hook or a South American country and 2) drug activity in said country. The topic is drugs on dean or the lack thereof, and whether or not neighbors should learn to deal with them or not...
Take the rest of this to the Lounge or Brooklyn and Beyond. -

I could see the defensiveness if the OP had been slagging the neighborhood in general -- "man, I saw a drug deal going down on the corner, Crown Heights sucks!" But that wasn't the case. The OP was issuing more of a rallying cry against one particular location -- "hey, has anyone else seen a dealer at XYZ street? Anyone else had any luck with a report to the police?" That doesn't need a defensive response. There's a difference between --

"Look, whaddya want? We're trying here!"
and --
"Hey, let's try and shut down that crack house right over there."
"Dude, this is Brooklyn, you have to EXPECT drugs!"
The latter sounds like almost REVELING in the fact that drugs are dealt on the corner, like it's some sort of tough street cred thing. And THAT is what I didn't get, is all.
so is the OP still around to give us a report on the current status? -
I have no idea whether or not the original dude in question was selling drugs or selling rat poison. What I can tell you is that about a month ago an old timer who used to live on Dean off of Nostrand told me about a guy who is like the neighborhood rat exterminator. He said he has this poison that he sells to neighbors which happens to be great for getting rid of rats. He gave me the dude's name and number (which I have misplaced and would really like to locate now) in case I ever needed to get rid of any rats. He also told me that the rat exterminating dude lives on Dean between Nostrand and Rogers. Again, I don't know if this is the same dude, but it might very well be. My husband and I had a good chuckle about this.
As far as getting use to drug dealing culture in Crown Heights, Brooklyn (and beyond) - I don't choose to accept it as proper part of my existence here in Crown Heights Brooklyn or anywhere else. I have seen too much of it and am tired of it. I will never get used to the idea that a crack head is going to steal my plants from my yard or all of the copper out of my house. I will not get used to the fact that there are young men and women being set up to be the fall guys for the big dealers, ending up in jail and then when finally allowed to come back home to our community they are highly unemployable, therefore leading them back to danger filled, dead end lives.
There is no way that I will ever get used to drug addicted babies, explaining to my children why the incoherent-tooth-missing lady in the middle of the street looks like she is being held up by some invisible wire, drug related gang violence, or the 24 hour jewelry exchange shop that EVERYBODY knows is a drug spot yet never gets shut down. Why in the world should I get used to that? Just because somebody sits a bowl of sh*t in front of you and tells you to eat it, doesn't mean that you should. And if you have had the misfortune to eat a bowl of sh*t it doesn't mean that you should get used to it and continue to request more. Who, when given the opportunity to eat what is good would rather eat sh*t?
Drug culture exists yes, but the havoc and the damage that it creates in the lives of the sellers, the users and the innocent bystanders is unforgiveable anywhere in Central Brooklyn or beyond. You don't have to be a punk to see that or to admit it. -
UGH I grew up with this all my life. Ain't nothing new to me. You just keep you and yours safe and thats all. Trying to make some big crusade will get you nowhere. We have been trying for decades. Doesn't work. Just keep you and yours safe and avoid it and go on with your life. Thats all. Funny how things we have had to live with forever are so new and shocking to you. You think because of your complexion and superiority you can demand to stop it or change it. You can't. Just accept where you are and if you want a squeaky clean policed zone go the other side to brooklyn heights or wherever. This has been going on far too long for you to stop it. You can't save the whole world. You can't even save your block. Also, your utopian vision may not fit the vision of the rest of your block. You will not make any friends snitching neither. You do want to keep you and yours safe right? Just some words of friendly advice. If it ain't your business, don't try and make it your business. You will have a good life in Brooklyn that way.

You are making an assumption that isn't always the case. I've found that many, actually _most_ of the people organizing to make a change are in fact people who have been here for quite some time, and are typically black.
Unless by "complexion and superiority" you meant black people, in which case, yeah, you are correct.
Most of the people that bitch on internet boards seem to be whiter newcomers (but not all,) most of the people organizing into community groups and making change seem to be blacker old timers (but not all.) *shrug*fivefifths wrote: You can't. Not true. Go check the crime stats, they are all online. You'll find that crime in the area first increased, and for quite some time has been on a big decline. Things change. It is their nature.fivefifths wrote: You can't save the whole world. You can't even save your block. Also, your utopian vision may not fit the vision of the rest of your block. In all honesty, I mostly live by this. But I certainly won't slag anyone trying to make a difference, and will support them in any way I can. I've seen a lot of great things and met a lot of great people who are making changes here, especially in the youth. -
Just in case everyone is certain that a message board can't change a drug problem on a block in Brooklyn....
