Has anyone had an event at the Picnic House in Prospect Park? I am trying to plan my wedding and want to know if anyone has had an event there (or knows someone who had an event there) and if they could share their experience.

THANKS!!!!!!! (Oh and HAPPY 4TH OF JULY..well, tomorrow at least!)

  • we had our wedding there.
We used one of their recommended caterers- moveable feast- they did a great job.
Some one else on this board used the raging skillet- I had hoped to use her- she is amazing, but our timing was off.
Our wedding was may 5th, 2007
I can send you the link to the pictures.
The picnic house was very good- a little hard for cars to understand that it is ok to drive past the baracade on weekends.
That was the one issue we had.
For the most part, the parks dept easy to work with.
you can pm me and I we can talk.
    have a nice 4th
  • Not a bad place for a wedding, you can also use the Boat House on the other sdie of the park. The Boat House is a little smaller, but it's off the main road and a little more quaint.
  • Ohh - thanks Minet - I will contact you!!
  • The Boathouse is really cute but the table options look a little strange...it looks liek they only have small, 4-person tables. We are doing a sit-down dinner...

Am I wrong about the Boathouse?
  • the boat house can only hold like 80 people for a sit down and dancing (?)
Also, the bathroom situation is not great at either. And very steep stairs.
But really nice view. My husband was afraid that the water would be smelly. (I guess sometimes it is?)
There are a ton of places we looked at all over nyc
  • Don't they do like an indoor/outdoor tented thing at the Boathouse for more people though? I think.
  • The caterers will provide the rentals so you can chose any type of table you want. You can also rent a tent and utilize the outdoor space.

  • Oh I see - I think we are leaning toward the picnic house though. The number of people may be a problem if it is max capacity at 70. Of course, this is very good to know in case we decide to scale back. Right now, we are planning to have around 100 attend.

Cool, incidentally, the have a write up on each place for events on their site:

    Picnic House
The Picnic House can accommodate up to 175 guests for dinner and dancing and up to 250 for cocktail parties.
    Boathouse
The facility can accommodate up to 110 guests for dinner and dancing indoors; 200 for cocktail parties; 300 with optional tenting outside.
  • Yeah - I don't want it to be crowded but I will definately keep the boathouse on my list.

Daver - you seem to be a fan...did you have an event there? If so, would love to know details...

Haha, no, I'm just envious! I love seeing everything set up when passing. It always seems so storybook and fairy tale from afar. Of course reality is different, I suppose. :D
  • HAHA! too right - it does look so fairy tale-esque!! My fiance and I had some photos taken there and were originally thinking of that as our location but started to get nervous about the size issue.

It is on our list of possible locations but the Pinic House looks perfect so, unless there is a really good reason not to go there, we will probably book it.

We saw the Picnic House set up for a Bar Mitzvah the other day and it looked really great.
  • we had about 100 at the picnic house.
I agree that the boathouse is really beautiful and I wanted it there, it just seemed tight. (also, you have to rent the tent and then if it doesn't rain, you rented a tent) (You could not rent the tent, but then if it rains.... vicious circle)
The Prospect Park alliance is having an event there- I think on the 17th- check the website and you can scope out the boathouse party scene.
  • My son's wedding was in the picnic house. We had about 100 guests so since it was so below its capacity there was plenty of space for the ceremony, cocktail hour and a sit down dinner. No matter what season the area around the picnic house provides great photo ops. I can highly recommend this venue.

If you like the boat house setting you can arrange for wedding photos to be taken there at a fee and the times they allow wedding shoots is somewhat limited. That might be worth investigating but I still think the picnic house is a lot classier as a place to have the wedding.
  • Good friends of ours had a blowout New Orleans-themed dinner/dancing birthday party at the Picnic House a few months ago. We left about midnight and it was still going strong. It was a fabulous place for a party... it felt as if we had the entire world to ourselves...
  • Thanks Veets and Booklaw - very promising...

I think I am starting to get excited...
  • Just got married at the Picnic House in mid-May and was thrilled with everything about it. Ended up with 100 guests for a mid-afternoon cocktail reception catered by Charles Susswein. He's really great to work with-- the food was terrific, his staff is wonderful, and was really good with our budget. The place itself is simple and classy and the park plays a wonderful role in the event. Can't speak highly enough about it. Write to me if you have any other questions. Good luck!
  • Hello! And hello Minet! I got married in the Picnic House this October and it was incredible! The place looks so elegant with so little. Some of our guests thought it was one of the most perfect venues for a wedding. if you need any pointers or tips please feel free to email me. Minet also has some great tips. I used her florist, Designs by Rose and they were incredible and pretty inexpensive.

    Congratulations!

    Ps. I used Raging Skillet.
