The Education of Sonny Carson — Brooklynian

The Education of Sonny Carson

Did anybody see this movie? A '70s story about black gangs in Brooklyn (the Lords and the Hawks). Kind of cheesy in a "Warriors" way.

There is a big fight scene filmed in Prospect Park. Anybody remember this being filmed? I think it was 1974ish.

  • I was 1 year old at the time, so my recollection of the period is a little shaky.
  • GREAT movie! The fight scene is in Fort Greene park though. That movie is a real story you know.
  • Yes, I knew it was a real story. Are you sure it was Ft. Greene park? I don't know what Ft. Greene park looks like, but I thought for sure that was the great lawn in PP.

Definitely Fort Greene park. The steps, the monument, the ball field. Sonny ran in Fort Greene and Bed Stuy. Matter of fact a piece of Gate Ave is now Sonny Carson Ave.
  • Yes,that part with the monument, etc was not PP, but I swear that the big "rumble" was on the great lawn. Is FGP really that big?

I'll have to watch it again, but it definitely looked like PP to me.

  • The fight scene is in prospect parks...the initiation into the gang scene was shot in fort greene. Clintonhillchill.com had a blog post about it this months ago.
