Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest
Subject: Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest
Is anyone going to this? My wife and I are after seeing Mighty Joey Chestnut run over the "unbeatable" Kobyashi. Some people may think this is just a display of gluttony, but I think it's as pure a sport as anything can be. Person against person, may the best one win. Pure intestinal fortitude. Anyway, I'll be the one in the white cowboy hat and muttonchop whiskers. Say hi if you see me.Comments

I was there last year, good fun. I plan to be there this year. I'll give a howdy y'all if I see you, you sound noticeable.
-
Is this done every year on the 4th of July, or is it just this year?
I found another blog about Brighton Beach/Coney Island area that is new

Every year. It's very famous. Some contestants come from around the world to participate and many practice like crazy. There is a whole competitive eating "circuit"
-
It's on ESPN2 right now!
-
I heart Eater X!
-
I find this to be a repulsive display of american gluttony. YUCK.
-
Chestnut may be my new hero, though...
-
OH MY GOD!!!!
A TIE!!!!!
Kobayashi and Chestnut, 59 hot dogs each in 10 minutes.

Dude, Kobayashi, the guy who won almost every year until last year, is Japanese.
EDIT: Additionally, the competition is sanctioned by the IFOCE, the International Federation of Competitive Eating. -
And Chestnut is the winner!!!!!!
What an athlete!
What an American! -
WWWOOOOWWW!!!!
Good match.
5 dog eat off after the tie to win one for America!
We LOVE you JOEY CHESTNUT!!!!!

Subject: 2 seconds left
With 2 seconds left, Chestnut grabs hot dogs double fisted to slam down his gullet, not fair. Look at the screen capture, I wish I had a link...terrible. Kobayashi eats fair, then Chestnut grabs two hots dogs behind both hands to tie...and that's just not right.
Kobayashi should have won. -

That's totally legit. Chestnut won fair and square.
Kobayashi should have won.18 wrote: Rules

Only adults 18 years or older who fulfill one of the following four conditions may compete:
* Being the reigning champion
* Winning a regional qualifying contest for that season
* Qualifying as one of two wildcards (highest two average qualifier scores without winning a single qualifer)
* Special invitation by IFOCE (see "Controversies" below)
The IFOCE has sanctioned the event since 1997. Today, only entrants currently under contract by the IFOCE can compete in the contest.
Rules used in the early years of the contest were different than today's. For example, in past contests minors could compete (Birgit Felden was 17 when she won the 1984 contest.)
During the event, the field of about 20 contestants stands on a raised platform behind a 30-foot-long table with drinks and Nathan's Famous hot dogs in buns. Most contestants drink water, but other kinds of drinks can and have been used. Condiments are allowed, but are usually not used. The hot dogs themselves are allowed to cool slightly after grilling to prevent possible mouth burns. Whoever consumes (and keeps down until the contest has ended) the most hot dogs and buns ("HDBs") in twelve minutes is declared the winner. However, starting in 2008, the contest will be only ten minutes long due to recent evidence suggesting the original contest in 1916 was this length (rather than 12 minutes). However, this has been somewhat controversial and critisized by the reigning champion of the event, Joey Chestnut. [3] There is further confusion about the length because of two articles suggesting the length of the contest was a mere three and a half minutes. A designated scorekeeper, known as a "Bunnette," is paired with each contestant. The Bunnette flips a number board counting the hot dogs consumed. Partially eaten hot dogs count and the granularity of measurement is eighths of a length. Hot dogs still in the mouth at the end of the 12 minutes count only if they are swallowed. There can be deductions in score for excess HDB debris. Both hands may be used. After the winner is declared, a plate with the number of hot dogs eaten by the winner is brought out for photo opportunities. -
Totally. "BOTH hands may be used."

If anything could be called a sport, that was it. Person against person, may the most capable win! I've seen it on TV the last few years, but being there in person was a transcendental experience!

How did the Chinese lady do?
-
I was way down by Popeyes, but from there it looked like there were a couple of oriental ladies, both of whom did very well. I've been looking in vain for a final results page on the net, but all I've seen so far was the two way tie, not results for the whole field.
-
There's this one lady from China who I understand eats more per pound of her weight than either Chestnut or Kobiashi. I believe she always places third overall or at the least first for women's.

I forget her real name, but I think you're talking about the "Black Widow". She's amazing -

That's Sonya Thomas, but she's Korean. There was another woman named Juliet Lee this time that I don't recall seeing before. -
Am I the only person here that's completely perplexed why physically bigger people with physically bigger stomachs are not winning these contests? It just seems logical to me. Let me guess, All the giant people are busy winning pole vaulting events.

It's not the size of your gut, it's how you use it. Besides, we're better applying our taste buds. -

But the hot dog competition is just one of many IFOCE events. There are some big record holders out there:

Here are some profile of the top IFOCE champions:

I was there (sorry Bogframe, didn't see your posting earlier). What fascinates me is how Kobayashi took the record from 25 to 50 dogs when he first won in 2001. Or did they increase the time as well?
My favorite winner however was this guy:
1981 Thomas DeBerry, 11 dogs. Winner stopped eating after five minutes to attend a family barbecue.

You're right. And there are also people who are paralyzed or are amputees. We should also be righteously outraged about the so-called-athletes who make a mockery of them by running around throwing, passing or kicking a ball, or who skate around the ice in sports such as baseball, basketball, football, soccer, hockey. Or basically any Olympic event. I hope people think about that the next time they think that running around a circular track for no reason is a wonderful and fun spectator sport. I mean, how can anyone who has a conscience think that is ok, let alone revel in it?

And what about swimming competitions? Haven't these people ever heard of DROUGHTS? There are people who have no access to any fresh water and it's heartbreaking, especially the children. I hope people think about that the next time they think that literally immersing their bodies and swimming around in water is a wonderful and fun spectator sport. I mean, how can anyone who has a conscience think that is ok, let alone revel in it? -
