The Pavilion: What a dump! — Brooklynian

The Pavilion: What a dump!

Just got back from seeing Wall E with my daughter, movie was great, but I wanted to rant about the Pavilion a little.

Most of the armrests in the theatre are either missing or falling off. Same goes for the beverage holders. This is not a complicated repair. All it takes is a screw and a screwdriver. In addition, once we were all settled in and the movie began they shut off the air. By the end of the film it was unbearable in there.

The manager tried to act surprised about the air, but I am convinced this is a money saving idea - once we are trapped inside and the movie has started they figure no one will complain.

Also, she said they were "working" on the condition of the theatre. Doubt it.

It definitely convenient to the nabe but a total dump. Stay away......

  • I never go to see a movie in this theater. In the winter it is freezing: in summer it is too hot; the floors are sticky: the chairs are broken. It just goes on and on!

I don't believe that any issue you encountered in this place will be fixed!
  • The armrests were broken the week the theater opened
  • i've lived half a block away for 5 years. i think i've been there 3 times. plus, all the movies are like "elf" and "bad santa"...
  • some of the rooms are fine. but some can be in really bad condition. there was one that didnt have the AC working a few weeks ago, but the girl behind the ticket counter warned us in advanced.

but last week when we were trying to catch the morning show, the line was horrible, very not organized, and the counter was not open until probably 10 mins before the show time (with the queue line went all the way around the corner)
  • I remember when they closed it for remodeling. I couldn't believe they didn't put nice seats in there. The seats were broken and stained almost immediately.

I go during the week to matinees or early shows. Some of the theatres are better than others. There's one teeny tiny one that gives me a headache and a neckache because you are WAY too close to the screen no matter where you sit
  • Frankly, this place is a poor excuse for a neighborhood theater.

I grew up in the era where going to the movies was no less than an aesthetic experience based on what the theater looked like and how it was maintained.... the Loews Premier, the Lowes Sutter..the Albermarle, the Lowes Kings...I could go on and on and it would include nearly all the theaters in Brooklyn.. O.k. I would have to exclude the Kent and the Midwood on ave J and afew others..

I hate to say it but at this point I could start a group that says.. I will see it on video, for most movies and the ones I want to see I will go to Manhattan to see the films I want when they are released.

Netflicks is a treasure trove of foreign, independent, generally quirky movies as well as all the hollywood hits. Buy a larger screen, by a more comfortable couch and for all but those that you want company for, view most of your movies at home and don't set foot in the Pavillion. If we could start a sucessful campaign towrad that goal think how quickly the darn place would be out of business.
  • I love Netflix. I just bought that device that lets you view Netflix on your TV (instead of instantly to your laptop).

It arrives on Tuesday. Next purchase is big TV, but have to wait a bit for that one
  • One exception.. I do go to movies at BAM

You mean a DVD player?

I know what you're talking about but I just couldn't resist!
  • Cute.

Got DVD. DVR. Netflix. Now this fucking thing. Seriously need to snap out of it!

i read about the device briefly the other day, though i dont think it makes any difference to me since i normally hook up the laptop and watch right from tv anyway.

but im curious. how does it work? does it run by streaming online too? are there more movies available from the device than on computer? what other differences besides letting you watch netflix movies on tv?
  • Ask me again on Tuesday or after.

Same selection, but you don't have to hook your laptop up to TV.

You can use it wirelessly and just connect power and those red/white cables. It comes with its own little remote control.

I never tried hooking my laptop up to tv, but i already have too many wires and cables running all over the place!

Yeah, let us know what you think about it. Also, if you have a Mac you can't (at least not yet as far as I know) watch instant movies on your computer :(
  • Really? No Macs? Call Roku (the vendor) and ask

Not unless you also run Windows on it, anyway.
  • I must be the exception I've enjoyed the vast majority of movies I've seen at the Pavilion. I guess it's all based on where you came from, as I used to live in Hell's Kitchen, and seeing movies on 42nd street was an absolutely nightmarish waste of time and money.

By comparision I've found the staff, and most patrons, very pleasant at the Pavilion.

I agree, pavillion sucks. Rent your movies on Netflix.
About that box, can you only watch the Watch in Now selections (cause those suck). Also, I run a cable from my laptop to my LCD (same cable you'd use for a laptop to projector) so I can watch the movies on my tv. But, like I said, the watch it now selection kinda sucks and is very limited.
  • I agree with those who say that it depends on the room there. I think that, with any theater, any movie on its way out of theaters gets pushed into the smallest, crappiest room. At the Pavilion, that room is especially scrappy, with a screen that inferior to what some people have in their living rooms.

They do have those digital screens for big attractions that I think can be a really nice experience, though.

Obviously, I prefer movies at BAM because of the gorgeous space, but they're not exactly going to be showing "Get Smart" anytime soon. I tend to wait until I'm visiting in-laws out of town to go to the movies, sadly, or just go to the Battery Park City theater, which feels completely suburban.

Netflix doesn't work for me. The movies wind up sitting around for weeks. I'd rather just rent from a local store.
