Help with the FOUND CAT - He's getting NICE!!!!!!!!!!
Comments

Yes, we tried for a microchip and he didn't have one. He has now been neutered, proclaimed healthy, and I have to go pick him up from the vet this afternoon.
But I'm really getting desperate for a new home for him. I cannot keep him forever or indefinitely, and absolutely NONE of the no-kill fosters and shelters I have called have any room - I get the same answer "It is kitten season, in the fall there will be more space, blah blah blah". Honestly, it is very frustrating.
We have plans to go away a number of times in the next few weeks and I don't know how I'm going to manage for him while I'm gone.
Any other ideas out there of where I can go? I'm getting really close to just dropping him in the middle of the park or something... -
How is the cats temperament going? Have you posted on petfinder/craigslist etc...
-
There must be someone out there who will take him... I wish I could but I have 2 cats and small apt.. and going away myself in the near future. Have you tried Sean Casey animal rescue? I've seen them host several adoption events at hallmark in windsor terrace. http://scarnyc.org/ ..

My mother adopted a "brain damaged" cat who had been abused and acted like that in a non-abusive home. One minute purring and happy on your lap, the next minute hopping up and hissing. Only hissing though -- never any biting or scratching. No other problems other than the mood swings.
The cat, "Dizzy" for the moment, is doing. He's still living in my 2nd bathroom, but ideally we'd like to find a great home for him.
He's a friendly guy but clearly very scared, and it shows. He goes from loving being scratched behind the ear to hissing and batting at me, but he still hasn't put his claws out, so its clearly fear rather than aggression. -
Well, 3 days after coming home from the vet and his neutering, the cat is acting MUCH nicer and is actually quite pleasant to be around. He LOVES to play with toys, especially a "cat dancer" which makes him run all around, flipping on his back, etc. He is even purring and letting me scratch his ears and stroke his fur. He has gone after my feet only a few times, but each time only momentarily, more like he is playing than aggressively. I have taken to wearing an old pair of Ugg boots to protect my feet and legs from any scratches, and he really loves rubbing up against my legs/boots and purring.
He needs a good home with people who will be patient with him and help him socialize. Unfortunately I still cannot keep him an really need to find him a home. I have called EVERYWHERE - Sean Casey said they would put him on petfinder (I cannot as I am not a registered foster organization), but NO ONE has room - they told me he will be "easier to place in the fall" but I cannot continue to foster him for months.
Thanks for all the input and advice - and if anyone wants a cat - or knows someone who does - or any other ideas, please let me know!!!!!! -
I wish I could take him, but I have 2 old guys. Have you tried Dr. Maddon's office...Park Slope Vets on 5th Avenue between 7th & 8th Streets? They often have cats there for adoption. Also, call Mike at NYC Pets on 9th Street to see if he has any suggestions.

You never mentioned if you tried craiglist? Like i mentioned earlier, i had posted an ad of a cat i rescued with a sob story and a really cute pic and i got several serious inquiries, although i ended up giving it to a friend in the end.

I have posted on Craig's List, but didn't get much response. Many people sound "sketchy" as if they would use the cat for baiting or experiments, and I would have to be very careful to screen them.
Just got back from a weekend away, and now need to start in earnest finding a place for him... again... -
Hey, it's been over a month so I'm going to go ahead and unsticky thisand move it to the pet board too.

So what happened to Dizzy? I called you about 2 weeks ago to let you know that you could show him on the Kensington Kitties bus in PS. But since you never responded I thought maybe you found a home for him. Perhaps if you brought Dizzy to meet the ladies from KK as Flexichick did then you may have gotten lucky with a foster home. It was pure chance that someone had just offered to foster a cat the day Flexi brought him there. I'm sorry that no one is able to take him off your hands and find him a home but rescue groups are over capacity right now. I have 3 more fosters than usual this summer because no one can physically take in any more cats. And that's on top of my normal 2 fosters, my cats, and 2 dogs.
Like I said in my message, Jenny from KK would be more than willing to show Dizzy on their bus in PS. You just have to bring him to 7th Ave between Carroll and Garfield when they're setting up and pick him up at the end of the day. If you still have Dizzy and you're still interested in finding him a home let me know and I'll tell Jenny to bring an extra cage. -
Bergenites - I sent you Jenny's number, along with contact info for Sean Conway. Before managing to get Jazzy in with the KK ladies (which was great timing) I made dozens of phone calls. As Caseople said, it's kitten season and every shelter or agency is overcrowded. Sean Conway told me to call him every day, which is what I would have done if I hadn't found a foster home for Jazzy.

Sean Casey. He now has the Hamilton Dog House, a new adoption facility on E. 3rd Street. I had a customer who was interested in adopting my 2 foster kittens but then decided he only wanted one kitten so I sent him there. Apparently they're packed as well. Kensington Kitties has no room for more cats and someone brought an adopted cat back to them on Sunday. As Bergenites has realized, foster homes are few and far between. There just aren't many people willing to change their lifestyles and take on the responsibility/expense. -
Thanks Flexi & Caseo - sorry for not responding. My life is really hectic at the moment and I wish I could devote more time to finding this cat a home (although I DO need to find him a home SOON!).
I know what you mean about people not wanting to change their lives -this cat have definitely been quite the adjustment for me. But I guess I'm very frustrated with the whole "system" - people who run shelters/fosters act like it is my fault for wanting to find him a home that isn't mine, when I'm the one who took the cat in and spend several hundred dollars to feed, shelter and neuter/vaccine him.
I guess they're telling me I should have just left him in the bushes to roast and/or starve.
(edited to add what I mean by this is that the inability of any reputable foster/rescue group to offer any help has made me feel that I made a mistake in rescuing Dizzy because I always knew I could not keep him forever, and I naively thought I would not have such a hard time finding him a new place. When a woman at an organization I will not name told me I had "made my bed and now I have to lie in it" I was really shocked.) -
Deleted. Stomach virus, no sleep, no money, too many cats, too much stress has made caseopele cranky.

Keep trying on Craigslist and pet finder too!
Making a quick flyer and posting at key foods, bookstores, coffee shops..etc on their bulletin boards. Carnivore was able to find an excellent home for the kitty I rescued by serendipity, he just happened to talk to some strangers at a cafe and they were looking for a cat :cat: -
These links should be helpful if you want to create an ad that might actually place Dizzy. A substandard craigslist posting or flyer is not going to grab anyone's attention.
I had luck on craigslist because i had a really cute picture of the cat i was trying to place. People who couldnt adopt the pet would write to me just to tell me i was amazing for taking the cat in and that i would go to heaven! Grab your digital camera and get some good shots, and get creative with your ads or you're not gonna find this kitty a home.

Cabaki, thanks! Those are great resources. I'm working on a new flier for Dizzy today, so I can re-post him at the local pet stores, vets, etc. These links have given me some good ideas of what to write - and what not to write!
I have some pretty cute pics of him and will try to pick the best one for the "ad" - any advice based on the ones from the Flickr link here?:

I am going to take him to 2 adoption places this weekend, and HOPE he finds a family who will love him like he deserves! This boy has been through a lot, but in the end he is just a big, sweet, lovable goofball who wants to run around and get dizzy! -
I like Dizzy 3 & 2 photos and the one with him laying down (4th photo)
What a cutie! -
How does this sound for a flyer? Too long? Any constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated!
I’m Dizzy, a 1-year old neutered male.
I was languishing in the bushes outside my foster mom’s home during the heat wave in June. I used to belong to someone, but for some reason they didn’t want me anymore, so I had to make my way in the streets. Lucky for me I landed in a nice temporary home with lots of good food, toys, and my new friend – a dog!
I wish my foster mom could keep me forever, because I LOVE to rub against her ankles and purr, and play chase with catnip mice, rubber bands and string!!!
I’m looking for my new home – hopefully a place with lots of catnip (mmmmmm) and nice, patient people who will love me even if I get a little scared sometimes – living on the streets really makes a guy skittish sometimes. I like my foster “brother” dog, and I think I would love to live with other cats – anyone who wants to play with me a lot would be great! My favorite thing in the world is to run around the house and get Dizzy! -
If I didn't have 2 already he would be mine! Great ad also!
-
I like the photo titled "photo". How precious!!! i'm a sucker for cats curled up in fetal positions staring up at you. Orange tabby cats seem to be adopted faster than others. I'd also include the the ones mamacita suggested.
Ad sounds good, though I'd probably make the situation sound more dire, as in "I wish my foster mom could keep me, but unfortunately she has to give me up by the end of the month, and I really dont want to end up on the street again or end up in a kitty shelter. I really hope there is someone else out there that i can stay with!".
I think people will react more strongly if you sound like you're going to put the cat back in the street by a certain date. If it just sounds like you want him to get a new home, they'll prob assume you'll just end up keeping him if no one comes forward.
Also did you draft up a print flyer? It might be cute to make a speech bubble with the cat saying something. I'm a graphic designer so I might be able to help, in addition to posting some flyers around. -
You can also try posting on catser it's a pretty good resource, www.catster.com
I got two cats adopted using their services.
Good Luck! -
What happened, any updates?
