On the Brink
Crown Heights on the Brink
Sad to say, tension between blacks and Jews in Crown Heights is on the rise, with members of each group accusing the other of ignoring streets assaults. The real problem isn’t race relations, it’s the rising tide of crime that’s been ignored for too long.
Crown Heights, as I have written repeatedly and documented on my blog, savebrooklynnow.blogspot.com, is one of those sections of the city where violent crime has held steady or risen while the rest of the city trumpets record declines.
In the 71st Precinct, which covers southern Crown Heights, the latest statistics show murders and robberies are at exactly the same level as last year and rapes are down 50%.
But in northern Crown Heights, the 77th Precinct has seen nine murders so far this year, more than double the four committed during the same period last year. And the 13 rapes recorded so far this year are a 116% increase from last year.
The crime spike is taking place despite the neighborhood getting some of the 600 extra cops the NYPD has assigned to high-crime areas.
So people in Crown Heights have every right to feel embattled and exasperated.
Where the conversation goes haywire is when people retreat into their tribal corners, seeing every crime as a skirmish in some larger ethnic war.

If this isn't propoganda, what is this.

To state that the hood is on the brink (of what?) with racial tension on the rise. Then state the real problem isnt race relations but crime.
What is the point of the post other than to entice the B.S.?
Anyone who has roots in this hood knows why the crime is going up. -
Well, I'll bite, since I'm new here (both on the board and in the neighborhood): why's crime going up, mantic?

To communicate with others?
To create awareness?
To expand concerns and understanding?
To clarify an issue?
To communicate?
To open for consideration?
ARE YOU SERIOUS?
Burn any books lately?

*blink* How did "what are you getting at" get translated into "I am a censor"? -

I allege that crime is on the rise every where across all classes. It is just allowed to creep into the books as needed.
The cause of the rise is simple economics. This 'hood is no different. -

I will re-state my opinion for your clarification.
If the OP intent is to bring awareness to the alleged 'factual' reports on crime, what is the purpose of opening with accusations of bias?
These are two seperate issues, lumped together to give a false association to the reader.
It is things like this that further fuel such bias and mis-understanding.
Have you READ any books lately? -
Errol Louis wrote about this on Saturday, minus the Jewish angle, plus a Bedford-Atlantic armory angle, and a relation to the city as a whole.
The numbers don't lie. Citywide, murders are up 8.2% compared with the first half of 2007, and rapes are up 9.4%.
Time for New York City to wake up to spike in murder and rape
The crime increase clusters in particular neighborhoods: The precincts of Manhattan North have seen a startling 42% jump in rapes so far this year compared with the first six months of 2007.
And in Brooklyn's 77th Precinct, where I live, murders are up 100% over last year - 12 murders so far this year versus six in the first half of 2007 - and rapes are up 100% too, doubling from eight to 16 for the same period.
The now-familiar political response, "Well, it's better than the old days. You shoulda been here in 1993," is of no consolation to a neighborhood where there were only nine murders in 1998.
We are losing ground in Crown Heights, and no amount of cheerleading can cover up that fact. -

Guest _is_ Errol Louis. -

Well, Guest is someone who posted Errol's column from the middle of May. I really doubt Guest _is_ Errol because Errol has an account here and I can't imagine why he would post a column from two months back.
Incidentally, for those squabbling about the whole black/Jewish thing, perhaps this sheds a bit of light. The "tensions" were much different in May. Well, maybe not so much, but they were at least splashed across the front pages not just in NYC but across the nation. So the column really wasn't out of place at that time. -

True, that's a valid distinction.
