Name your cheapest place w cheapest price for cat products
Hello folks.
I have recently become the proud mommy of an additional Siamese cat. Now that I have two cats, my bills for cat supplies are through the roof. So I need assistance with the following:
Cheapest place to get Cat litter (I prefer fresh step,)
Cheapest place to get Cat toys stuff (like "stay off furniture spray", scratching post etc)
If you know a place please list the address and how much you pay for the item you are calling cheap. For example, I was going to Target downtown Brooklyn and paying 10-13$ for the 21 pound box of Fresh Step, which goes rather fast in my home. My place is not very ventilated, and I change the litter 2x a day.
Thanks SOOO very much!

I buy my litter (I think it's Scoop Away) at Costco. I forget how much it is...something like $10-12 for 33 or 35 lbs.

Do you have to buy a costco card in order to buy from there. Someone told me that you had to buy a costco card and it was like 120$ is that true? I am wondering if its worth that, since the only thing I would be buying is cat litter since, I live by myself and eat out a lot.
Thanks so much. Did you buy a costco card? -
yes, you need a card to shop. I don't think membership is that expensive though (my mom puts me on as an additional family member to her card). I find it worth it....or, just make friends with somebody who belongs and ask them to take you.
I know BJ's has a thing where you can shop for the day, but I think they charge you 15% extra for everything since you don't have a card. Check their websites -
You change the litter twice a day?

That is the same thing I am thinking. No wonder litter is expensive for the OP. I buy a big tub of Scoop Away maybe once a month, if that often. I have two cats in the house, three boxes and scoop as needed during the day. I change the litter every other week or so as needed. Scoop Away clumps up liquid waste into nice piss patties, easily removed.
I use hooded litter boxes (keeps the scent in) that are made in such a way, you roll it on its top and it sends the clumped litter and solids into a handy pullout tray.
When you change the litter, put a this layer of baking soda in the bottom. -

Yes I change the litter 2x a day. Not the whole litter. In the morning I scoop out the feces and pee and add more clean litter. At night I dump the litter completely. So I dump it completely 1x a day, but clean it adding more litter to it 2x a day.
For some reason My nose is very sensitive and I don't like cat pee odors. My apartment is tiny and doesn't get much cross ventilation.
A good tip I found was never to buy Meow Mix, as it tends to make cat feces smell worse  -

My cats did not like the covered litter box AT ALL. I will use the baking soda idea. Thanks.

There is also a product by Mrs Meyers (I think), a powder to sprinkle.
I used "World's Best", which is great cause you can flush it away. Didn't bother me at all, I'm sensitive to the kitty litter itself.
Now I'm using a pellet litter, also flushable, made from pine. It's awesome. Don't need to change it for at least 2-3 weeks. My kitty likes to dig and breaks it up quicker than most cats probably. It smells of pine all the time. -
I get the Ever Clean scoopable cat litter in the 41 lb. jug from Acme Pet. I think that it's around $25. Acme will deliver for free when you over at least $25 of stuff (easy to do!). I like Ever Clean a lot better than Scoop Away and Tidy Cat - it clumps better and seems to last longer.
I think that Costco membership is $50/year. -
I use World's Best and the Pine when I can find it and when I can afford it.
Everyone should keep in mind that the "fresh smelling" scoopable ones (Scoop Away and the like) are chock full of chemicals that kitty will ultimately lick off. Yuck! NOT healthy. -
Plus, being able to safely flush litter down the toilet is very cool. And oh so easy (litter box is next to the toilet).

My cats won't use the "natural" kitty litters at all so we are stuck with using the clay scoopable kinds in my home. I have seen a lot of cats with skin allergies recently due to the World's Best Cat Litter. Some cats are allergic to corn and the World's Best Cat Litter (being made mostly of corn) can often be the culprit.

I was thinking that my cat's allergies might be from the corn, but we are still testing the pine. Waiting to see if said allergies return. He didn't like the pellets at first, then got used to it. Did you try to mix the clay and natural litter before going all the way with the new litter?

really??? what kind of allergic reaction are they getting?

His ears get really dirty (like a brown wax) and the tips get some spots. It will go away after using some medicated ear drops. Then after a bit will come back. I've changed the litter and now changed his food diet (no fish, no grains). Also working with Joe at Whiskers (a holistic pet store). I don't think it is the litter... probably the food.

sorry to divert this thread from cheap litter

I think I will actually try the Ever Clean.
