Roku by Netflix
Has anyone used the Roku by Netflix yet? It looks awesome... but I wanted some real people reviews before I decide to get it...

I mean do you think it’s worth it? I mean instant movies and TV shows directly to your TV would be awesome. And it will help with the whole 2009 DTV change... it looks like you can hook up any old TV to the Roku system...
Anyways... I am not that tech savvy so I wanted to know your opinions...

I just bought one. It should be arriving tomorrow. Ask me in a few days

Never used the box, but I stream Netflix on my PC - it's fine, but the selection of movies pretty much blows right now. Who prioritizes the availability of these flicks???
-
Just got off the phone with Netflix.
They told me that:
a) Roku will work with a Mac. All you need is a fast internet connection. It's not actually playing through your computer. Your computer doesn't even need to be on (as long as you have put movies in your instant queue).
b) You can't stream instantly on a Mac because Apple hasn't given permission to them yet.
c) She said that in the last year they've added over 5,000 instant titles and are hoping to double within the year. That there is a lot of administration involved in getting the studios to give rights to allow instant access. She didn't know how movies were prioritized and what the rhyme or reason is as to why some new releases are there and others aren't.
that said, FedEx is giving me the run-around as to whether I should expect my Roku box tomorrow. Sigh. -
I ordered it the day it went on sale. I have used it often and it works great. I used my wireless wifi to connect to the roku and it works like a charm. The movie images are very good. Almost dvd quality.
The only issue i have is the selection of watch it now movies. But that is changing every day as more and more movies are added.
before the roku i was seriously considering buying a small computer just to connect it to my living room television. The roku came out right on time.
I have not mailed out my netflix dvd's in about a month now because I have been using the roku so often. for $100 you can't go wrong. -
The only thing I expect to miss when watching Roku movies is adding Spanish subtitles (as I am studying Spanish and it's a great passive way to add vocabulary and to see if the translation is correct). You also can't watch the DVD extras

thanks for the info everyone!
Flexi let me know when you finally deliver it what you think!
I think I am going to order it in the next few weeks... -
FedEx is pissing me off. The "commitment date" is Thursday, but online it says it will be delivered today (although it doesn't look like it has moved since it was in Reno on Thursday last week). The phone system says today, but the agent on phone says Thurs. GRRRR!
Jaha -I'll definitely post an update after I play around with it. -
It says out on truck for delivery today, so fingers are crossed, although I won't be home for a few hours...hopefully somebody else will answer the door
-
it's here! not sure if I have the patience to hook it up tonight, but I'll do it tomorrow for sure
-
Ok, just did the wireless install (very easy) and started a movie.
I may never leave the house again :-)
