I'm so pissed I'm glad I don't own a gun! — Brooklynian

I'm so pissed I'm glad I don't own a gun!

Subject: I'm so pissed I'm glad I don't own a gun!

So my wife was walking our two dogs back to our apartment on 2nd Street between PPW and 8th. Three people were walking abreast toward her on the same side of the street. My wife stopped and they continued, refusing to move. One of the women bumped my wife and stepped on my dog's paw. When my wife confronted her about the rude behavior, the woman replied laughing , "Oh, I'm sooo sorry." When my wife said she would appreciate it if they didn't take up the whole sidewalk, the woman said, and I have a neighbor who confirms this, "Then maybe you should go back to your own neighborhood."

Now, the fucked thing about this is that my wife is black, from Barbados, and this white woman told her she should go back to her "own" neighborhood, assuming what gawd only knows.

Our neighbor called the woman out for her racist comments and told her that maybe she should leave the neighborhood if that's her attitude toward people of color.

If I had a gun I would have shot the asshole.

This women lives on the south side of 2nd Street, about 1/3rd of the way down from PPW, in a brownstone with rental units.

  • Sh*t. I don't blame you. Are these people also neighbors of yours? If so, maybe we can go picket them or something. I'm down for it!
  • Ouch.

Your wifey should have openend up a can. Bam! Right in the mouth. That will teach her a good lesson.
  • That really sucks, LtT. People are so stupid. Let us know if you run into them (or over them!)

    Let's do it...
  • 1) What a bitch.

    2) Get bigger and/or meaner-lookin' dogs.
  • See the following recommended reading:

"Crap On Command," by the Monks of New Skete.

  • So uncool and fucked up. I wish I could've been there...I need a good fight.

    See? People suck.
  • Is your wife ok.

Thanks for asking. Yeah, but she's so bummed. What happened is deeply upsetting to her. But she sees the world through different eyes than me (I'm white) - and in some cases more easily distinguishes between assholes and good people, where I might, at times, be more likely to paint a group with a broad brush.
  • this morning on the way to work
i see an old man in his 60's getting busted for selling DVD's
three undercover policemen are giving him a hard time for trying to sell his DVDs
and i'm like, 'couldn't they make better use of their time by knocking on the door of the neighborhood crack dealer?'

anyways. the 3 cops were black
    the old man was white

    assholes come in all colors
  • Tell her to let it go it's not worth dwelling on what morons say,We had a situation when we were just married ,we rented an apartment on 20th st between 10th and Terrace Pl, it was an ideal apt. for newlyweds and when my wife went back to pick up the keys the landlady spoke to her in Italian, my wife asked why are you speaking Italian I'm Irish, the landlady said If I knew that I wouldn't have rented to you , my wife's response was, if I knew you were Italian I wouldn't have rented from you, she said there was a moment of silence and they both broke out laughing and were good friends for the four years we lived there..

Well, this woman was clearly an asshole and I disagree with Hamilton. She shouldn't have to get over being treated that way. It's so not funny and the odds of these two women being able to laugh about it later is as remote as my ever flying to Mars by flapping my arms.
  • Wow, what a total cunt. Maybe you could arrange for her to "accidentally" end up in my neighborhood? With an attitude like that she'd get her ass kicked pretty damn quick. I would have loved to have been there for that. I've been in a foul mood lately and really wouldn't have minded letting it loose on that bitch. Give your wife a hug for me.
  • My GF, who is white, had an argument with two white lesbians over her dog while she was walking him on the sidewalk. He looks intimidating but is a sweetheart. Anyhoo, after words were flying back and forth, she was also with her young kids, they both told her to go back to where she came from. She was born here and is of Irish ancestry?

So much for the peaceful tolerant crowd.
  • Okay, these women sound horrible, Livetotravel. They do. And I'm sorry this happened to your wife.

But I'm real uncomfortable with the stuff about "getting a gun," and I'm just as uncomfortable with calling a woman a "cunt," and I couldn't NOT at least say so here.

I know y'all are all venting and all, but geez.
  • that's messed up. i bet those people aren't even longtime resident of the neighborhood either. entitled pieces of shit.

i don't think anyone i know would have been so composed under such conditions.

glad your wife and dog are well.

    Public urination time.
  • There's a lot of dumb ass people in the world and you can't really do anything about it except hunt down their children so that they don't multiply.

I have a shovel. Prospect Park is so convenient.

I use the insult "cunt" very rarely, only when I believe it's truly warranted. I will also call a man a "fucking prick" when warranted. This piece of human garbage not only insulted and demeaned LtT's wife but she stepped on their dog as well. And I highly doubt LtT is serious about the whole gun thing. People tend to exaggerate a bit when they're rightfully pissed off.
  • In all fairness, we only have one side of the story. If the OP's wife's account is true, it's possible that the offender has a mild mental illness. Many people, who aren't blatantly insane, have personality disorders. I'm not defending this behavior, I'm just trying to consider possible reasons why someone would say "go back to your neighborhood."

I grow uncomfortable with trying to find excuses for the woman's behavior. If the OP knows the woman, and it sounds like he does, maybe a note left under her door wil lhelp him vent.
  • Why search for unlikely excuses when the most likely explanation is obvious: racism!

In saying "go back to your neighborhood", the speaker obviously made an assumption that black people could not possibly live in Park Slope, which is (in the speaker's opinion) reserved for white investment bankers, consultants, lawyers and their respective spouses, children and $1000 strollers.
  • Maybe the OP could accidentally splash some paint in front of the building where these twats live to mark it? I wouldn't want to piss on the wrong stoop.

Anyone who would step on a dog is a psychopath. So, she's a psycho AND a racist.
  • Does anyone else think this story is very odd.
Ltt, is a regular poster and i completely believe him.

However, as I was reading this story I thought for sure his wife was white and these were black punks. Why? Well, look around these boards and in the news. White muggings, beatings, gentrification backlash, hipsters hating...

Am I the only one shocked. I mean how stupid can a white honky bitch be to say that to Mrs.LTT? The audacity, stupidity, insanity, ridiculousness...  what the fuck what she thinking? And where did this person come from. This is PS not hicksville, WTF?

    White trash.... I blame Bush
  • What color is the dog? :-k
  • I think the ignorance of many people (Americans and foreigners, but mainly Americans) is not limited to any race, religion or ethnicity. Unfortunately, so many people are hostile to people who are not exactly like themselves, because they are ignorant and afraid of what is different. That being said, there is no excuse for behavior like this of any kind, and I am very sorry to hear about this incident happening in what should be a tollerant community given how ethnically (and everything else)-diverse we are here in Brooklyn.

Sadly, racism exists on so many levels, and it is always shocking, especially in such a case as this, when LtT's wife did nothing to provoke any sort of attack on herself, and was merely trying to be a "polite New Yorker" while walking her dog. (I'm not saying that racist attacks are good even if someone is, say, walking down the street calling racial slurs or something, but at least then it is possible to see how the attackers might feel they are "justified").

LtT, I am sorry this happened and I am sorry you have to share a community (we all do) with someone as clearly ignorant as your neighbor. That being said, I don't think your "call to arms" is the answer, though I am sure that if such a thing happened to me, my husband would be as livid and defensive of me as you are of your wife. I hope that if you ever encounter this unfortunately excuse for a person again you will have the grace and the guts to tell her off soundly using your words, even threatening to involve authorities for her potential hate crime against your wife (she did harm your dog and bump into your wife which I am sure you could turn into a racist attack in some way). She should learn that her behavior and attitude will not be tollerated.

Better yet, if you can post a picture or a really good description of her on here, we can all be on the lookout for her in the neighborhood and individually go off at her....

    YES!
  • Hi all - thanks for all the comments. Just some clarifications...

    1. I do not know the offending woman at all.
    2. I don't know her exact address, my neighbor gave me the approximate location.
    3. There is absolutely no confusion on anyone's part who witnessed it what the woman meant by "go back to your own neighborhood."
    4. I did not issue a call to arms - I merely said I'm glad I don't own a gun or I would have shot that asshole. Actually I am anti-gun. It was simply literary license. Sorry if it caused any discomfort among those readers who commented.

And just as an aside - although not as blatant as this incident, my wife has had many "curious" comments made to her over the years by long-term residents of this part of the Slope who mistakenly confused her with folks who come into the neighborhood on work assignments, like dog-walkers, nannies, etc. But they are the exception and most people with whom we come into contact are warm, accepting and welcoming.
  • Take pride in the fact that your wife showed so much more breeding than that woman. Berating/beating, insulting her would have been proving her opinion right.
