So Bloomberg's really cracking down on illegal fireworks this year, huh? Can someone tell him that there have been fireworks going off almost every night in this neighborhood since the end of June? Sure you can call 311 or 911 but by the time they arrive the fireworks are over. This is NOT the fault of the cops, it's well known that there are about 6 squad cars for all of CH.

I heard a little story recently that really pissed me off. For about 10 years now there have been unofficial fireworks on Union St. Yes, they're illegal but that's not the point. This year after about 20 minutes 3 cop cars showed up to shut it down. The next time they came back they brought a paddy wagon. This all began around 9:30 when the other fireworks were going off. All well and good but what do we get in CH? 10 nights of fireworks going off sometimes until 3 in the morning. And not enough cops to go around. Can someone explain to me why the hell Park Slope deserves more cops than Crown Heights?

This is not a rant against cops, I know there's a shortage in the city and it's not their fault. This post also has nothing to do with gentrification. What it is about is the fact that douchebags have been setting off fireworks, m-80's, and long ass strings of firecrackers practically outside my building. Combine that with my dogs getting pissed off and barking at them and I haven't been sleeping well. Fireworks at 9:30pm on July 4th in Park Slope get shut down faster than you can blink but screw you Crown Heights! Enjoy your middle of the night fireworks for over a fucking week!

Fuck fireworks and the assholes who set them off in the middle of the night. Fuck Bloomberg. And fuck the asshole who invented M-80s.

    It's still nothing like it used to be in the 80s when you could get freworks anywhere. It still sucks when it's right outside your door, but it used to be much worse. When I was growing up, literally every kid on my block had a whole arsenal of fireworks.

    I didn't- it was past my bedtime. Most of it was in the evening (say 6pm-11pm). There was definitely still some activity later into the night, but not at 3am for a whole week. But the total mass of explosives detonated was way more. Exponentially more.

    See, and that is what I figured. Shitloads more would be annoying, of course, but I wonder if shitloads _before_ 11pm would be less annoying than a lesser amount daily at 3am?

    the block next to us had more firepower than my hometown on the 4th, but it was all done by 10:30 or 11.

    a little weird that the cops didn't notice -- apparently the place for the terrorists to invade is crown heights, because it was like the battle of normandy over there -- but not actually that annoying.

    maybe it would have been annoying if it had been my actual block, but it did seem like most of the block was out enjoying themselves.

    Wow, thanks for reading my sleep deprived rant! There are a few things that piss me off about this whole thing (shocking, I know!). One is that they didn't start last night until after midnight so I thought I would actually get to sleep early for once. Two, last year was nothing like this! This year Bloomie declares a big crackdown on fireworks and in CH it ends up being worse. Three, wtf is so exciting about firecrackers? Oooh, they go boom! At least other fireworks are pretty.

    I guess what pissed me off the most was the police response to the fireworks in PS on the 4th. At 9:30 at night on the 4th it took 20 minutes for 3 squad cars to arrive. While CH has fireworks nightly for over a week and we get nothing. Hey, here's an idea! Send some of those PS cops to us where we really need them.

    Thanks for letting me bitch guys, and for being so understanding. I'm a bit surprised that there hasn't been at least one post telling me, "If you don't like it why don't you move to the suburbs/go back where you came from?!?" :lol:

    One pretty funny thing about this was the fact that my 3 legged cat was sitting in the window watching the fireworks. When there was a lull she'd get down but as soon as more started she was right back in the window, she loved them!

    Sadly, caseopele, the reason that Crown Heights doesn't get the same treatment as Park Slope is because we are not united enough to fight for what we deserve. One person cannot change things. There is power in numbers. The Bedford Armory situation is a perfect example -- we can't even get 1,000 people to sign letters opposing the Mayor's plans. How pathetic is that? We have the power to get the amenities and treatment that Park Slope has, but our power is not being utilized. Park Slope's Armory is not an eyesore either!!!

    Mamacita, you obviously misunderstood my post because I wasn't hating at all. In fact, I admire the persistence and dedication of the people who got Park Slope where it is now as well as those who fight to keep it that way. I just wish that members of our community would adopt the same philosophies that's all.

    PS: I love 'amateur' fireworks and reminisce fondly about the days when the Fourth and Chinese New Year turned parts of the city into a ticker tape parade.

    Amateur fireworks can be great at times. Idiots lighting long ass strings of firecrackers right outside my building in the middle of the night, not as much fun. Especially when they do it for several nights in a row.

    Not everything is a black/white thing there kemosabe. And if you absolutely feel the need to label it, then I would say that it is more of a black thing. Which would make sense, given the percentages of population in the area. *shrug*
