Trying to be a writer. I like to run and Eastern Parkway is great for that. As for a story? I can't think of anything too cool at the moment but a few weeks ago a friend was out here visiting from California and we got wasted at Franklin Park. We go back to my apartment on New York and Bergen but decide the night's not finished yet even though its at least 3 am. So we get a couple 40s and I insist I know the coolest place in all of New York City to drink at but its a little bit of a walk. So I lead him on a 30 minute walk until we end up at Grand Army Plaza. We drink at the edge of the park watching the cars drive by the lit up arch and that's how I got my forum avatar pic (although sadly I had to cut out most of it...you can't even tell I'm at Grand Army Plaza in it).

hah. well! I used to do lit support in a law firm but (as everyone I even VAGUELY know knows) I quit last week. I'm home now. thinking about writing again, maybe starting a company, temping, and traveling. no interest in anything else. exhausted? yes. also thinking of making a nice side fashion/accessory business since my folks are moving to ecuador (don't ask - but ask if you're interested/have interest/know wtf you're talking about).
in other words, planning to abandon corporate america ASAP. -

Speaking of Weird Al, on my very recent trip to Southern California, my brother, father and I saw him play at a small theater in Ventura. I figured it'd probably be a good show, but it way exceeded my expectations. The guy can rock a joint and he's funny as hell. His parody of R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet" is brilliant.
Does that count as a story? Anyway, I do freelance bookkeeping for various artists, non-profits and small businesses. So I go to different places daily and I can dress casually, which is great! For extra cash, I will fill in for ushers on Broadway on occasion. -

Oooh...I lurve Ecuador. I work in fashion (denim design) now, but when I was a student and had loads of vacation time I wandered Ecuador for almost a month and just adored it.
I guess I'm not technically in CH but I'm nearby so I like reading this board. -

Do you need them in a timely manner? I get it at work...you're welcome to my old copies if you're just looking for ideas, or whatever. I actually just tossed at least 6 months worth...but I think I have back til mid-June or so. -

really?? I'm looking for anything re: spring 2009 accessories (even though I know most purchasing is already done) - I need to get ahead on trends. I'll take whatever you're willing to give up. if you need them back, obvi, I'll hand them over! I just need to know so I can read them at a kinko's in front of a color copier rather than the old ripping-pages-out routine I do with the shit I own/don't have to return evar.

Yeah, I rarely find myself looking at old ones, so you probably just keep them...and you could definitely tear out articles on accessories. I read it more for the sales trends/finance/bankruptcy rumors perspective (ie, the most boring parts...thank god for the photos though!!).
I didn't go into the office today, but I'll grab what I have on Monday, and you can stop by and pick them up any night next week. -
i work at a museum (not the brooklyn museum, sigh, my commute would be so short!) doing financey stuff. in september i'm starting a 10 month MS in finance program while working full time still, which is going to be insane. i have a lovely kitty named penelope who is obsessed with people food and pretending she is a loaf of bread. my favorite restaurant of all time is sushi gen on washington.

I teach elementary school at a somewhat-nearby public school.

We carry daily issues of WWD at Queens Library...not sure what they have at Brooklyn Public Library, but it might be worth a call to Central to ask. -
I do real estate stuff in Crown Heights.
BUt more interestingly, I'm going to Nicaragua in August for 10 days.
Anybody been there recently? Did you know the Sandanistas (remember them?) are back in power and their former Foreign Minister, Father Miquel D'Escoto (that's right, he's a Maryknoll priest) is about to become the next president of the United Nations. As Foreign Minister, he sued the US in the World Court for damages related to the Contras, and won $17 billion settlement. Guess how much Nicaragua collected? -
Hi everybody! I'm currently writing my PhD dissertation on 19th century Puerto Rican and Cuban colonial literature and representations of slavery and colonialism. Fun stuff! To get by, I tutor and translate a bit plus some teaching and TA'ing.
By the way, Capt. Planet, while it's true that the new Nicaraguan president, Daniel Ortega, was a Sandinista, he is no longer the revolutionary socialist he was back in the days of the Contras, he's more of a leftist reformist now, so don't worry about being caught up in the middle of a revolutionary take over of private property and the like. -
Hi All,
I'm a long-time lurking creep who finally decided to create an account! I'm a 26-year-old living in the Jewish Hospital (Classon side). As far as what I do, I'm an editorial assistant at a book publishing company by day, and a failed musician by night. I like to eat at Chavella's, I like to drink at Franklin Park and Soda, and I don't like long walks on the beach because sand bothers me. -
Hullo.
I'm a reporter at a newspaper up in Queens. I'm about to be 27, poor as a church mouse, and STILL haven't been to Franklin Park despite vague ambitions otherwise.
I cover Jackson Heights, East Elmhurst, Corona, Sunnyside and Woodside, which means the occasional murder, plenty of immigration stories and lots of traffic congestion gripes.
I'd say I'm a failed musician like The Invisible Lines, but you have to play outside your bedroom before you can fail.
Wow, alafairnadia. I hadn't heard you quit. Shows you how much I actually pay attention. -
hola,
i am 40 [yickes!], ex dancer, ex editor and future ESL teacher. I am originally from Barcelona (Spain), but been here for a looooooong time. I absolutely love Chavella's, and would go more to Franklin Park if i didn't have two little kids and an empty wallet. I have been living in CH for five years and hope to stay for many more. -
hey there. if you want any tips, help whatever my mum did second language acquisition teaching to teachers. she ranted at me years ago about my german teacher (and hey! I failed!) but that's not her thing. she knows linguistics and how to impart info re language to anyone. it's crazy. so, let met know if you need an assist.
-
hi alafairnadia, believe it or not second language acquisition is a pretty fascinating topic (one of my favorite classes at school), i bet your mom is really cool
Right now the most immediate help i need is finding a teaching gig at a public school, but if i need assistance on some SLA stuff i will drop you a line.
peace, -

I've been trying to learn Spanish for months. I'e taken 15 weeks of classes at Easy Espanol and I'm still barely monosyllabic in Spanish. As I leave in a month for Nicaragua, any help in acquiring Spanish would be appreciated. -
It's so different once you arrive, although 10 days is not long. Still, you probably retained more from your lessons than you think!

well, if you want to grab coffee at joyce or beer at soda or whatever I'd be happy to test your skillz in spanish. my mum is a firm believer in immersion. are you watching spanish-lang. tv? like, maybe watch the news in spanish, or a variety show or whatever on a daily basis. that'll help you figure out how much you 'really' know v. what you 'think' you know. my spanish isn't amazing - I actually need to be around my folks, spanish speakers or in a spanish speaking country for a bit (like a day or something) to really beef it up. but I drop into it all the time, too, so part of my brain is wired that way and I can definitely do general convo easy.
of course. the other issue. I can't promise that you'll know nicaraguan spanish. for instance. in cuban spanish, if we say, "I'm going to catch the bus" we say "vamos a cojer la juajua". in argentine spanish, that phrase means "I'm going to fuck a little kid." so. um. yeah. just a warning. -

Hi, I just wanted to put in my two cents as a Spanish teacher and native speaker. It's great to see people invested in learning castellano!
Like alaifarnadia says, immersion, immersion, immersion! And take advantage of any Spanish-speaking friends you might have. Reading the newspaper or any other text -online or not- also helps.
Seeking a conversation tutor is another option, that is, if you have the money. The minimum is 50 bucks an hour. If so, there are plenty of Spanish PhD students at NYU, Columbia or CUNY Grad School with more than the necessary experience to assist you. I would be glad to help you but I have to focus completely on this darn dissertation before class starts., ugh.
And I wouldn't worry too much about the divide between regional dialects. True, there are some words that don't have the same meaning, but these are just a few. G'luck! -
<----adult learner of Spanish here. Pretty conversant at this point. I'm half-Cuban, so I should have learned this way earlier, but I'm stubborn.
Some suggestions:
- add Spanish subtitles to English movies as a passive way of picking up vocabulary. Pretty soon you'll be able to see if the translation is correct.
- as mentioned, put on the SAP channels on your TV.
- Telenovelas. So much drama, they're pretty easy to understand
- iTunes has a bunch of good (free) podcasts. I listen to them on the subway or when walking around. Try "Notes in Spanish". They have 3 levels and are pretty fun to listen to.
- MeetUp.com has Spanish groups that meet frequently at bars and restaurants (including Aji in PS once a month). They just ask that you buy one drink (or soda) to keep the restaurants happy. -
You could probably get a cheaper tutor (which doesn't mean a bad tutor!) on Craigslist. My Chinese is probably the same level as alafairnadia's Spanish...it's better around family or in a Chinese-speaking country but only passable without. I found an excellent tutor on Craigslist for $25/hour, so I wouldn't be surprised if native Spanish speakers are available at a reasonable rate.
All that said, while it's so much better to improve, it's only 10 days and it's not like you're going to Nicaragua without ANY Spanish knowledge at all! I'm sure you'll be fine. -
my spanish really is shit if I'm trying to write in it - I can't put an accent in the right place ever. it's a failure. but. I can read it pretty well except for regional shit - say a menu - and that sort of crap. most of the time, though, spanish language is my savior. and heck, I gotta get a 60 lb rottie through fucking quito's airport pretty soon. once again I will be baffled by random ecuadorian terms and sit there and be all "er, well, in um... cuban, we say blah"
and yeah, there aren't tons of dangerous phrases ... but I personally experienced the 'donde podemos cojer la jaujua?' misunderstanding in argentina with my folks. it wasn't cute. -
oh, and it was my first language so I'm good with conjugation, etc. I can't explain the grammar, I can just correct it. I think it's why I love ordering the past-perfect manhattan at weather up. I don't know what past-perfect means, but I can get the verbage right when speaking. and my folks are both phd's who correct me when I blow it so I sorta vaguely have some claim to lang knowledge. and I won't charge you a penny!
