Fresh catnip — Brooklynian

Fresh catnip

So it seems my little boy cat doesn't like the dried catnip, but prefers the fresh. Does anyone around here grow it (community garden maybe)? I would like to snag a little. I'll probably grow some myself, but have to wait till the next farmers' market to get it and figure out how to grow it without much sunlight. Thanks for any ideas. :)

  • I am growing some and my boy cat loves it...I'd be happy to give you some, but it's really so short and scrawny looking I'm not sure if it would really appeal to your guy once it's out of the pot
  • Forgot to mention I'm in the pH neighborhood.

I hope your catnip grows tall and strong soon. Do you let your cat munch on it all the time.

My mom used to grow it outside, but the cat would be out there all day munching on it. Then would roll around for a few hours and go back to munching. He had to go to rehab. :)
  • My boy sticks his whole face in the pot. The he sits down next to it and hugs the pot sometimes. It's pretty funny
  • hey poppy -- i belong to a community garden with a HUGE amount of catmint. i'd be happy to meet you there and give you tons.

as for catnip, i can give you some seeds if you like -- it seems pretty easy to grow.

    pm me if interested.
  • btw, I noticed that the other area where I am growing the catnip is doing well.
  • Would love to come by and pick some up. But just to clarify, what is catmint versus catnip?

  • well, i guess from that link that the common names overlap, but what i meant by catmint is this:

    image

blue/purple flowers, sage family fat square stems, somewhat dusty green leaves. one of my cats loves it fresh, the other is like "enh".

    by catnip, i meant this:

    image

shinier leaves, less clustered, thinner stems, white flowers. both of my cats go apeshit for it.
  • I've got the one with white flowers....catnip....I bought the seeds at Tarzian Hardware and it came up very quickly (within days)
  • Ahhhh... makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up.

I want to grow it myself, but need to get the flower box for the window.

Does it grow outside year round?
