UPS on 7th Ave near 8th Street.
FedEx depot in Sunset Park (do you have a car?) -
I will have a car when dropping off this package. Hopefully that UPS will accept large packages (50x20x9). A drop-off box does not suit my needs.

It's a UPS store, not a drop box. Call them if you aren't sure.

I do not ship all that many things but we do receive packages (large and small) and my first choice would be UPS then followed by Fed Ex.
I won't even order a shirt on line if my only option is the U.S. Post office.. -
You can also call UPS or Fedex to schedule pickups of large boxes (or any boxes). I can't remember if there's a charge....but if there is, it's small compared to the total cost of shipping a 50x20x9 box. Sound like a bike box, maybe? I just shipped a couple bikes to Brooklyn...FedEx Ground is the way to go. Cheaper than UPS Ground. Took 4 days from California.
If you set up a FedEx acct, and do all the shipping online, its ~20% cheaper than walking into a FedEx location. -
I've shipped some pretty large boxes via USPS. I believe thier limits are 70 lbs and 130" length and width. What reason did the USPS give you that they couldn't take your box?
If your going to have a car, take it the downtown branch. -
you can also schedule with the USPS for them to come to your home for a carrier pick up, after you've printed postage from online at click and ship. it's at usps.com.

It is 130" combined distance around widest part, 50+50+20+20=140", too big for them. -

I totally recommend DHL!
I had the same problems w USPS etc. And have had massive headaches w UPS and FedEx. DHL is really cheap (for a fairly heavy box of shoes/books, about 12"x14"x14" it cost about $7). They also bring the forms with them, and will wait while you fill them out (altho it is admittedly easier to get them in advance from a drop box), and the time windows are really convenient.
But do read the info online carefully, because w all of these services, if your package is over certain dimensions, they will automatically charge you a high weight charge ("dimensional weight"). So its actually more convenient and just as cheap to pack more medium size boxes.
I got clean nice boxes free from Trader Joe's Wine near Union Sq.
Hope that helps.

I am not using a pickup because I am assuming they come at whatever time they want. I have a job to go to. Unless they can come 100% before 9am, package pickup will not work for me.siren wrote:
I know all about dimensional weight. My 25 pound package is actually 47 pounds.

Can anyone lend me a chainsaw to cut my bass in half?
