5th Ave Farm - Bodega on 5th Ave and 15th Street

I hope they're on vacation...but wouldn't they have put up a sign? That's the best fresh fruit/veg store in the Slope. Does anyone know what's happening?

they're closed. i watched it happening. (i live right up the block on 15th.) the women on my block who are authorities on all things 15th-street-between-5th-and-6th said that the owners lost their license to take food stamps - though i thought i had noticed a sign saying no food stamps when i first went there, shortly after moving to 15th street, about a year ago. maybe that was the beginning of the end, though. it's really sad. now i feel guilty for only going there for ingredients for last-minute veggie dinners. they had really good mozzarella and were super-nice.

Well, it's not impossible, but the woman who told me what was going on is the unofficial mayor of 15th street and has not led me astray before. She's this kind of wonderful non-busybody who just sort of absorbs all news without seeming intrusive. I think she's lived on the street since the beginning of time. But it's possible that she's not actually omniscient.

It's also possible that the space is being renovated to be filled by someone else. From my observation, business did not seem to be booming. Even if the owners are super-frugal and have tons of cash socked away, I'd be surprised if anyone thought such a renovation would be a worthwhile investment given the proximity of the Met and Associated food markets south on 5th, Young's market (a bodega 2 doors north with worse produce, but still lots and lots of it), the new Union Market with lots of delicious and expensive produce right around the corner, and all the various other competitors that, even if more expensive and/or less good, have a greater variety of products and better hours. (The corner market opened later and closed earlier than than most).

As it happens I was just in Young's today, and according to them 5th and 15th is closed.

Bummer.

Anyone know how the produce is in those two markets further up 5th (toward the expressway)? Young's is a great bodega, but their produce selection is just ok. And Grade Fair ain't cutting it.

Whose Rashomon account is true? lnelson, is it possible you watched it getting closed down for renovation purposes? It would be a serious blow if they were really gone for good.

That aside, it does suck that the produce stand is not open.

There is the Korean market up a ways more between 18th and 19th...good prices, friendly service. I guess I'm going back there now. It's even better since it's next to that little Mexican bakery run by that great family.

Damn, I wish I hadn't moved from 18th street--so much is popping up over there (Quarter, Eurotrip, Publick House, etc.)
