a now-defunct indie rock band from (i think) athens, ga.

Just for the sake of accuracy--they're originally from Louisiana.
-
is it ok if I like the Neutral Milk Hotel, even though I only recently heard of them/bought their album? I have a good excuse- there's a trombone in the band, and I play trombone, and I feel the need to support all popular forms of music incorporating trombone...
the guy who turned me on to them had a pretty funny story about prying the band's name out of a hipster working at a coffee shop that was playing their album.
that said, they're not particularly wonderful, just pretty good and incorporating trombone. -

Oh yeah, you're waaay behind the curve on that one, and therefore not in any danger of being considered hip
(Note: I have never heard of this band) -

Amen Rhodamine !!
May I suggest this as the title of someone's next short story, novel, novella, song, performance ... or ... maybe even ...hmmm, no, i won't say it ... don't make me ...

Sweet... now, in a couple of years, I'll go out and by some CDs by Franz Ferdinand and the Killers, and then, a few months later, I'll realize how lame those bands are and start listening to other bands that sound just like them. -
After reading all this info, I think I am a lifelong brooklynite who mistakenly calls people hipsters when they may not be. Here are things a person may say to make me call them a hipster:
Any COMMENT that is spoken as a question. e.g.- "We went to Jack's PARTY last night??" "I'm really TIRED tonight???" "That's shirt is so awesome???" "I spoke to Susanna last night???"
What are THEY called? They make me sick. Most of those people speaking like that are fuckin rude and ignorant too. With their heads up their asses they come walking out of bars & stores and walk right into you or in front of you. And they also think that being a New Yorker means walking slowly in front of moving vehicles that have the right of way. I love to hit them with my sideview mirror and then hear them yell, "HEY maaaan! That isn't cool???" hahaha! -

isn't that standard-issue valley-girl speak? -
Yes, absolutely. That description makes me think "tourist" or maybe "teenager"...but definitely not hipster.

egads... if there's any confusion as to what a hipster is, go to the bar called Siberia (but don't look for a sign- there's no sign, it's way too hip for that) on 40th between 8th and 9th. It was this complete craphole that looked like my friend Matt's garage where our band used to practice, except somehow dirtier and darker. It was loaded up with hipsters of every size and function, including their sound guy, who clearly wasn't paying any attention while my band was playing, as he was chatting away with his friends.
I mean, granted, the band's not that good, our performance was particularly bad, and we probably don't really appeal to hipsters proper, I'm pretty sure we were being judged more on our haircuts and choice of dress than our music itself. One guy even yelled out "you're like the beatles," which is a very strange thing for a hipster guy to say, because I'm pretty sure he meant it in an ironic, obnoxious way, but like, hey, what does that even mean?
Ugh... I guess I'm blowing off some steam because it was such a bad gig, but the sound guy didn't even turn my microphone on for the song I sing lead on, he was too busy chatting it up. Plus the band before us didn't even take their stuff off stage while we played, we had to like arrange our stuff around the guitar players rig because he disappeared into the hipster night after his band was done, and we were too polite to hastily push it off stage.
Sorry to vent, I really don't want to sound like I have a major problem with so-called 'hipsters' or whatever, but this was definitely a scene that was attracting a sort of mindless following, and, even though, like I said, we didn't play very well at all, it might have had something to do with the fact that we were very obviously judged as uncool before we even started. I could just tell from the way these people looked at me from under their silly hair that they thought I didn't belong, and, I guess, to be honest, I didn't. Probably the band's fault for booking a show in a bar like this, but I have a feeling that if our jeans were a little tighter, our shirts a little older, and our hair a little longer and less neatly kept, we would have had a much different reception.
Wow... I didn't intend this post to be this much of an anti-hipster harangue, and I apologize if it seems that way. I guess I'm just in a bad mood after a horrendous show. -

in my opinion:
venting is cathartic ...
and my *sense* is that you didn't say anything particularly offensive to anyone ... nor did you wish to. so if it was up to me, i'd say .. 'not to worry' .. but then again, as the ultimate non-hipster, i don't speak for anyone but myself. -

I love that bar and I have seen some great and some shitty bands there, the best was "The Ghetto Ways", the worst was some dudes in from boston the same night. They also have the Playboy pinball machine and motorcycles for sale.
Dont make the mistake of crucifying a bar as mindless hipster heaven becasue you had a shitty gig.
That place is way too cheap and dirty for "hipsters" anyways.
By the way that bar has been there for years...... way before hipsters ever existed and the music and clientelle has basically been the same. -

Hipsters in Midtown???? I don't think so. Part of being a Hipster is bragging that you never go above 14th Street.
no sign, it's way too hip for that) on 40th between 8th and 9th.

i promise all of you, these were serious hipsters... keep in mind that the place was very far west in midtown and was way more hell's kitchen than times square. Maybe they were there for the band after us, I'm not sure who they were but they, too, fit the profile: there were vintage t-shirts, tight jeans with way too big holes in them, thrift-store suits two sizes too small, and lots of silly haircuts... I swear- my girlfriend and I have been long debating exactly who and what constitutes a hipster, and immediately after the show she pulled me aside and said, "these people- these people are hipsters."

Hmmm. Yeah, that sounds about right.
Oh, that reminds me, The Fame, The Soft Explosions, and The Blue Van will be playing Southpaw on the 30th. -
Anyone see sharon jones at southpaw saturday? Amazing...

Hipster Quiz courtesy of Gawker. I scored:
10-14 points: You are a Hipster. You seek out the latest and greatest music, and you might have a blog. You go to shows at Mercury Lounge, Bowery Ballroom and Northsix several times a month, and most of your friends are hipsters, too. You have little in common with most co-workers or fellow students. You’ve gazed longingly at the Misshapes photo gallery and considered it  maybe you’ve even gone once or twice  but guest lists and Happy Ending after-parties are still a foreign concept, even though you’d love to be a part of it. You’ve stopped hanging out above 14th Street.

I think I scored zero points on that quiz, which is odd because I think I'd come closer to fitting the description of "culturally aware" than "normal person." Conclusion: quiz is faulty; we can disregard it.
