Have you been to the pool?
has anyone here been to the sunset park pool? Are all city pools the same in regards to the ambiance lol? I have gone a handful of times with my kids because it is so close, but I just don't feel right taking my kids there anymore. All you hear is f.. this and the n word. Not just from other kids either but form moms themselves! Not to mention the people taht work there have the nastiest attitudes, where do they find them and why on earth do they hire them, even the pool mabager edward gilles is unprofessional. I have never been to a city pool before and I was thinking it would be different, I hope all of them are not this way. I guess I will stick to the beach......

My oldest son works as a lifeguard in the city and the city is desperate for lifeguards. The problem is that the good lifeguards don't want to work in poor neighborhoods and the good ones can choose where to work. It comes down to nothing more than a policing action with all these kids ejected and threatening to come back when the guards are done for the day. 10 years ago I took my 3 kids to that pool. We basically stood at the ramp for an hour and left. Never went back. Tried Red Hook also. Unfortunately it comes down to going to a "better" neighborhood.

I'm sure that's partly true. However, a lot of the kids who come to the pool here (in Sunset) are not residents of the immediate area. I think it comes down to going to a pool when it's less crowded, and also the pools with kiddie pools tend to be less rowdy. The Douglass and Degraw pool seems to get high marks - but I've never been there (at least not yet).
*edited for embarrassing lack of "s" at the end of plurals. -
As an aside, I've been to Sunset, but only first thing (11 AM). I found the lifeguards pleasant enough, and the kids were younger and very nice. When we were coming down the ramp, one older kid told some younger ones to stop splashing "There's a baby coming." (She meant my toddler, not me.)
If you're going to go, get in line at 10:45 and be there for the first hour or so. It will probably be much better.
