Getting the pooch ready for a baby?

Anyone had any experience getting your dog ready for a human baby in the family? Right now it's me, hubs, dog. In March it's going to be the 3 of us plus a kidlet. YAY! Duke is a super laid-back boy and I expect he's going to be awesome with a baby - he gets even more calm around babies and he's fascinated by the way they smell. So, even though I don't anticipate anything but a smooth transition, I'm wondering if there are any tips or tricks out there to make him comfortable with the new addition.

  • cover the baby in peanut butter? :-)

    I kid. I kid.
  • Duke knows what that big belly is all about, and he can probably smell the hormones anyway. We played baby crying noises for a while before the kiddo came, but I have no idea if it helped Roofis or not.

When I came home to walk Roofis while wife and child were still in the hospital, I brought one of the blankets the baby had been sleeping in and let Roofis smell it and then left it on his bed. Once again, I have no idea if it helped or not, but Roofis has been a cool customer about the whole thing. The real fun starts when the kid can crawl and starts attacking pooch!

The main thing is to still give the pooch lots of attention after the baby arrives. Don't listen to anyone who tells you you have to wash your hands between touching the dog and touching the baby - NOT TRUE! Touch the baby and the dog alot!
  • I second the suggestion to bring home the baby's hospital blanket for Duke. It really does get them used to the scent of the baby so it's not such a big deal when the actual baby comes home. Duke sounds like a great dog and I'm sure you wont' have any problems. Congratulations, BTW!
  • You guys are great! The blanket is so smart. I'd heard that before but had totally forgotten. Genius.

The peanut butter suggestion isn't half bad, either. ;-)

We think he knows what's up because he follows me everywhere. He was a follower before, but now it's constant. If I go to the bathroom he sits outside the door waiting for me. Pretty darn cute.
