  • Subject: city lighting?

i'm sure i missed the discussions... but what happened to city lighting? i heard the owners own a bunch of restaurants in the neighborhood.

also... is this burrito bar related to the one in tribeca?

(i agree re: the sign. it's so out of character and beyond...)

    thans.

I believe 'City Lighting' was owned by the same people who own (owened?) 'Boat' on Smith Street and 'Great Lakes' on 5th Avenue in the Slope.

I believe it is the same people. The place in Tribeca is shutted/closed and that happened at about the same time this new one opened up. But the signage is still in place. Hope someone has the brains to preserve it.

and Buttermilk down 5th and 13th or so, and formerly Roxy on Smith.liked them all.

i think the hipper-than-thou, "we'll get you a beer when we're damn good and ready" and "Managers?!? W edon't need no stinkin' managers." style that works/ed so well in the bars just doesn't translate to an establishment reliant on prompt food service.

hope it didn't hurt them too bad, wouldn't want to see Boat/Great Lakes/Buttermilk suffer, but they should stay out of the restartaunt business.

still rooting against this place, though I peaked in the window yesterday to see an orientation with a rather good-looking staff going on.

perhaps the sign will get struck by lightning.

    /fingers crossed

I think that the problem stemmed from the fact that there was a restaurant boom a few years back and suddenly everyone is opening up something. Look at Smith Street. The same guy who opened Patois a while back now has a trio of restaurants on the corner of Smith and Pacific. Can anyone say 'over-extended'?

I understand the idea of opening and owning 2 or 3 places in today's economy, but I think at a certain point people just have to stop or else the end up spreading themselves too thin.

It's an aside--but related--but I think it's quite sad that the real estate market is so viscious nowadays that the idea of opening up one business and making that one business successful is now a tad 'old fashioned' in a way. Everyone seems to be mini-chain owners. Even the 99 cent store folks.
  • hmmm.

    intersting thoughts Jack.

don't know if that's true (though it certainly may be).

I think a lot of restaraunt/bar owners actually kind of do it to themselves.

its been a while since i supplemented (by which i mean in some years 80%) my income in bar and restaraunt work.

but, from my experience bar/restaraunt developers LOVE to "open" places.
shop for settings, consult with designiners, lighting guys, arrange and re-arrange the menu, interview staff, do the pr, meet the neighborhood folks, the whole process is exhilarating.

actually show up every morning early, and leave late: not so much.

not saying this is always true, but has been in my experience.

the sign is really bad, i'll stick with la taqueria down on 7th ave.

also im pretty sure burrito bar has this whole hippie theme going ... which makes my eyes hurt. no tie dye for me thanks!
  • Subject: Photo of Fugly Burrito Bar Sign?

Can someone post a photo of the fugly Burrito Bar sign to enhance this message thread? I caught a glimpse from afar the other day (hard to miss, even from 3 blocks away), but would love to see a photo. Yes, I will walk over there eventually to see the hideous thing for myself but in the meantime, can we have a photo for the lazy types? Thank you! ;-)
  • As long as they don't put bits and pieces of that sign in my burrito, I'm willing to give it a shot.
  • Subject: Very Festive

I like the sign! It is very festive... The City Lights sign was nice but the restaurant was mediocre at best. So let's give the place a chance before it gets ripped to shreds? Might be nice? There are so many other things that can be ripped to shreds for those of you looking to rip something to shreds...

I am sure I will be next! Bring it on! I know how busy you all are!

I'll reserve judgement on the food until I've actually tried it, but that sign sucks.
    Big time!

  • I walked in on Saturday (I was doing a survey of the neighborhood) to ask if they had a delivery menu. They don't yet do delivery, but will start sometime next week. The restaurant was reasonably full, sometime around 3:30 or so on Saturday afternoon, which was a surprise. Also, the woman I spoke with was very nice.

FYI, the sign looked fine to me. No less or more stupid than any other sign on the block.

The food smells were quite lovely. Has anyone tried this joint yet? I wasn't hungry and it was a bit hot to force-feed myself mexican food on Saturday.

This thread is just about the sign, you know.
  • Finally got a photo of the sign, sent in by Jack, who also posted it on Picpatrol.com, one of Brooklyn's premier neighborhood photoblogs:

I can't believe this. I used to frequent the place in Manhatten and now I live in Los Angeles. I can't wait to go back east and even trek over to brooklyn specifically for the chicken quesadillas and salsa. I live in Southern California for goodness sake and I have yet to eat mexican food as good as the burrito bar. I've been all over the place in Mexico and haven't eaten mexican as good as the burrito bar. I'm jonesing for Burrito Bar food. I was so sad the last time I went to the city and found the place closed and was just told it reopened in Brooklyn. I'm so excited. Think I'll have thanksgiving dinner there. I will be there with jars to take home salsa.
  • Subject: Oh no

I hear they are extending the sign to read "Burrito Bar and Kitchen with Bathroom"

we should rearrange the sign to say:

    A BRIT BURRO
    RABBI OR RUT
    ARBOR RUB IT

    or, best of all:
    I RUB BRA ROT

Are you kidding? The taco truck outside of Staples center has better food than this place.

i gotta hope that original comment was a joke

Uh. I haven't even eaten at the Burrito Bar, but I can tell you right now this is either a joke or someone with the kind of bad taste in food I thought belonged exclusively to my college roommate (who hates "fancy food" and subsisted almost entirely on Lender's bagels, hot dogs, mac and cheese, and ramen the three years we lived together. And not for affordability purposes, either. Weirdo.)
  • Subject: burrito bar? eww! it's applebees or something worse

went there with a friend and my son. Food was quaintly named. We refused to say the cluck cluck chicken burrito or the moo moo beef or whatever the f*ck it was called. However, we were forced out of our table by the smarmy "manager/oner" who told us our table had a reservation and that we needed to vacate. I was pissed, belligerent. He was cheesy, rude. I asked him if I was at Applebees on 42nd street. I miss the light store.
  • Ate there on Friday- I enjoyed my meal, my wife enjoyed her meal. I had the enchiladas la bandera- 3 enchiladas (beef, chicken and cheese) with different sauces arranged to resemble the Mexican flag (red, white and green respectively) My wife had a salad with shrimp. Chips were pretty good and free, no complaints there. The sangria (both red and white) tasted great, but I felt that it could have used a little more likker... my wife will tell you that I ALWAYS think that a drink could use a little more liquor, so take that how you will.

As far as authenticity... I have probably eaten more Mexican food than most non-Mexicans, but the sample of that food was admittedly narrow. I bartended/managed at a small chain of family-owned Mexican restaurants. The owners, the Leons, are Mexican- 4 of the 7 siblings were born were born in Mexico before the family moved to LA. The food that I sampled at Burrito Bar is very similar to the food at Acapulco, the Leon's restaurant. Jose, who founded Acapulco, described their food as "slightly Americanized Mexican." If I use the food that I ate at the homes of various Leons outside of work as a standard, I would say that Jose's description is fairly accurate.

In any event, I look forward to trying a few more things there- I played it pretty safe with the enchiladas, but I'll venture out in to more risky territory, like the chile rellenos, on future visits.
  • speaking of mexican... we ate at "lobo" in park slope this past weekend. that place is pretty damn good. def better than burrito bar, thats for sure.

I had the chile relleno -- the pepper was fresh and spicy, but it was a little bland.

What was it missing? Any idea what kind of cheese they use?

when i had the chiles rellenos there, i can say that the one thing it wasn't missing was the seedy pepper-core inside it.

that was a bit of a turn off.

washing it down with a warm, flat dos equis helped. sort of...

Ah... yeah, that would be a bit of a turn-off.

I didn't have either of those problems with the XX. I do wish that they had a bit more of a selection on the tequila side of things, though... Corralejo, Corralejo, donde estas, mi Corrallejo?! o Corazon... o Don Eduardo!!! Si!!! Don Eduardo!!!

one wonders how they managed to stuff the cheese into the pepper without cutting out the core. but who knows...

i was psyched to see they had XX on tap. maybe it was just an off day. seems hard to fuck up a beer, heh.

Well, if you happen to find yourself in the St Paul/Minneapolis area, you'll be happy to know that you can down a 34 oz xx lager or amber for 3 bucks each... oh, that's not a happy hour special, it's all day everyday... can you think of a better way to spend six bucks?!
