Where to buy disposable iced coffee cups/tops/straws?
I'm making my own iced coffee to save money and because I like how it tastes. At home I drink it from reusable cups, but if I want to bring it to work in the AM, which is the idea, I need those cups with tops that have holes for straws, plus the straws, that they have at every coffee shop. Didn't find them at C-Town or other grocery stores I checked, or at 5th Ave. 99-cent places that have party and outdoor supplies. Any suggestions?

alternate solution: buy one of those large, hard plastic water bottles with included straw.
-
exactly. less waste. really, any reusable coffee container will work, and some of them will keep your coffee cold.

i feared this would be the reaction. the "beware your carbon-footprint" half of my brain warned me, but i paid it no heed.
ok, ok, ok ok ok. does anyone know of a particularly good brand of reusable cup? by "good" i mean lightweight, easy to clean, convenient to carry around. i've had bad luck with nalgenes, but maybe something along those lines? -
i'd go to bed bath and beyond or some such place and find a nice stainless steel one. i don't know a particular brand, but i like metal more than plastic, and you can get something insulated so your ice won't melt.

the Tarzian kitchen store (across from their hardware store) on 7th Ave, near 2nd street might have some good options.

use your hands instead of a cup. spit instead of hot water, and dirt instead of coffee and you save tons of money and conserve energy. No thanks needed, helping people be green is thanks enough.

The OXO Good Grips LiquiSeal Travel Mug (the metal one... not the plastic one) is spillproof and will keep iced coffee cold for hours (or hot coffee hot). I bought mine at Amazon for about $20 and love it.

Sigg is all the rage these days. They sell them at the kids' store Lolli and at that store next to Roma Pizza on 7th avenue.

The best to use are the stainless steel ones. The hard plastic polycarbonate ones leach bisphenol-A (BPA) as do some aluminum ones that are epoxy lined. I use a Kleen Kanteen Tent and Trails on Park Place in lower manhattan carries them or I hear the Oxo travel mugs are pretty good

I second the stainless steel opinion. Check out this week's NYMag for a page of reusable bottles for sale locally. There's actually a ceramic one with a silicone lid that looks just like a paper hot coffee cup. Cute.

i like sigg, too. especially the insulated ones. i got mine at applewares. sadly, they're closing up shop. happily, everything is on sale.
-
another alternative: simply save the ones you get at the deli or coffee shop. take 'em home, wash 'em out and re-use them.

I recommend stainless steel. Keeps my iced coffee cold for hours. As in the ice is still in it by the end of the day... then I go clean it.

Subject: sigg mugs
Wow, I hadn't heard of these before. I'll have to try them out. Btw, REI has a pretty wide selection of them online:

I noticed that they sell cleansing tablets for these, which is probably a rip off, but since I'm a lazy bastard and hate doing dishes, it's making me more tempted to get one

Costco has the plastic covers and little straws.

I'm also a fan of reusable stuff, but for those times when it's not practical, I saw what looked like decent options of insulated cups with lids at the Key Food on 5th Ave and Sterling.

I knew this post would get way overblown....
I favor prezst's solution. From a carbon footprint standpoint, reusing disposables is the way to go. I fill up my Poland Springs bottle from the faucet for about 3 weeks before I throw it away.... I do the same with the iced coffee cups from tea lounge..
On another note: $21.98 - for a water bottle. Are you fucking kidding me? I grew up with a bunch of half filled plastic bottles in the freezer... they are perfect for a day trip... and basically free.
If you think these things are environmentally friendly you need to get your head out of your ass. These are heavy aluminum cans, with plastic tops, and plenty of decorative ink. Furthermore, if you read the reviews you will see that they aren't well insulated, they dent easily, and eventually they will leak.
For $21 I can get enough Poland Springs bottles to last a year... and I would bet the carbon footprint on a case of poland springs is a hell of a lot less than one of these bottles. How? Simple economies of scale and a verifiable dedication the the environment from the company. -
I second the Costco post. I've been using their disposable paper cups for years for hot coffee. I bet they can withstand cold coffee for an hour or even more

I saw disposable ones by the package at C-Town on 9th St. I think they were near the trash bags and kitchen stuff if I remember correctly. I've also seen them at target on the top shelf by the coffee.
I got a KICK ASS stainless steel coffee cup at Gorilla. It's got a collapsible handle so it doesn't take up too much room in my purse. Oh, I should mention that I can throw it in my purse with no problem because it also has a fully sealed lid. Or I could attach it to my purse because the collapsible handle also opens as a latch. Its the greatest melding of form & function I've ever seen in a coffee mug. People always want to see it and ask where I got it. No, seriously.
