Favorite Trader Joe's Purchases

Subject: Favorite Trader Joe's Purchases

So, I think I'm hitting the road to the one in Queens very soon.

I love me my TJ's, but wonder if there's anything I overlook. Any suggestions?

  • My favorites:

    - almost all of the raviolis in the fridge section - gorgonzola, portabella, ricotta and spinach, lobster
    - cherry jelly
    - peanut butter puffins
    - a lot of the hand soaps and bath soaps
    - potato pancakes (frozen)
    - pork dumplings (frozen)
    - penne arrabiata (frozen)
    - gnocchi (frozen)
    - cranberry/orange muffins
    - chopped pancetta (fridge)
  • Tamales.

Just about the only thing I get there.

    Fridge or frozen?

That's it? There's sooooo much good stuff there!

    Frozen.

I don't know, I never see much there that I want. I always leave nearly empty-handed.
  • No fancy salted nuts? no dried montgomery cherries? no orange jelly sticks covered in dark chocolate?

    ok, more for me!

Maybe once in a while, but how many times do you buy that stuff a year?
  • I like the enchiladas. the enchilada pie is shit, tho. love the soups. and do they still have the grean beans in spicy sauce (frozen)?

oh! the artichoke thingy in a jar is a HIT all the time. love it. and their not fritos are also awesome.

they have Puffins!? Those can be hard to find. I'm a big fan of the cinnamon Puffins.
  • Their frozen breaded tilapia filets are pretty damn good (and they're individually wrapped!), as is ANY of those mini cookies in those plastic tubbies (sweets!).
  • oh, they make good cookies and merengue...but those orange sticks are teh yum.

I don't eat fish, so not enticed by that.

OQ - they have all of the puffins ......
  • I like the tomato less salsa with corn, slightly spicy and sweet. A great combo!

I also go for the chocolate covered raisins and multigrain ciabatta bread.
  • ALF - what is the artichoke thingie in a jar? Details, please.

Oh, that salsa sounds good, Darla!

Ooooh....look at your avatar. Yay, kitty :-)
  • Chocolate covered peanut butter filled pretzels. YES.

Also, their jams are delish. I'm also a fan of the "guacamole kit" in the produce section. It's a container with a couple avocados, an onion, a tomato, garlic, a lime, a few jalepenos... for $1.99.

Yep, it's the one and only Minxie. The cutie but vocal and adamant only child! That was taken when she was 4 months old. :D
  • Aw...Minxie is cute. She needs a "brag book" posting (see Pets thread).

Just back from TJ's. $120 later.

Some new things to try: frozen steelcut oatmeal (somebody on this board had asked me to pick some up for them months ago....whoever you are, I lost your email), potato and cheddar pierogies (frozen) and a few other things which the heat wave has sucked out of my memory
  • the artichoke thingy is a ... hang on, think I have a jar in my cupboard. it's an artichoke antipasto in a jar. I took it to the bear mountain hike last year and it got inhaled. like 10 seconds and it was gone. crackers, bread, not fritos, whatever.
  • oh, yah, I know that one. yummy
  • Frozen tilapia
    Chunky applesauce (it's totally amazing!)

And then usually find stuff that I never knew I needed, but OMG I need to buy!
  • i actually really like the frozen mini quiches. good for a quick snack.
  • I also bought a new double wide scratchy place for the kitties. I went to the kitchen for a minute and came back. Stella was completely kangaroo kicking the bag that the catnip comes in trying to break it open. She's a stoner. Now Jackson is on it rolling around. They're time-sharing.
  • Correction. They WERE time sharing until Stella ran full-speed, leapt in the air, landed on Jackson and wrestled him off. And there she sits, looking smug.

Ok, consider this done! Check out the cutie pie under the Pets thread now.
  • Cheap/good hummus (and pita)
Cheap soy/rice milk for those who drink it.
    cheap/good OJ in the carton
TJ dark roast coffee is good
They have some good granolas- the apple granny smith...mmm.

    Frozen section- fish is decent
    i second the quiches
the spring rolls...lemon grass chicken and hmm coconut chicken?
there are chicken strips that come in an orange bag- when I nannied for a fam they used to have me sautee them and toss them in with pasta and veggies- it worked! great for quick quesadillas too.

    Dried fruit rocks there.

    Chunky applesauce- yep- definitely.
If you like cliff bars (and any bar really)- they're the cheapest there.

TJ wine shops are also amazing- 2 buck chuck is good enough if you can take a glass without any wine snobbery on the side.

Hmm...I could go on...ice cream goes on sale and the party starts.

I tend to dislike their produce section most often- It is usually too ripe or unripe-
I had avocados there- really cheap once, but...they never ripened- brown bag and all. I ended up giving up.

I find that TJ's is the place for "a few goodies" for each person- and the rest is bust.
  • by "a few goodies" do you mean $120 worth.....

I got a lot of good stuff....

nuts, cheeses (fresh mozz plus monterey jack string), 4 packages of fridge ravioli (gorgonzola, 4 cheese, lobster, ricotta and spinach), 5 packages frozen pasta (arrabiata, gnocchi gorgonzola), got blue berry muffins, a big double-wide scratchy place for my boyboy. Fresh salsa, whole wheat tortillas, steelcut oatmeal, pierogies, cherry jelly, bath soap (in pump) and bath bar soap, grated cheese, pancetta.... I'm sure a bunch of other things too
I can't buy avocados there because you have to buy the whole bag
  • Flexichick wrote:

That is exactly what I did...I bought a bag for ...$2.50? Maybe 4 avocados- you know, like a miracle in a bag....until they didnt ripen. I was heartbroken. Maybe. ;-)

You're right- there *are* lots of goodies there and one could spend $120- but I've also gone in and have been able to only want/need a small basket worth of things. I'm fairly relieved on those days...bc I cannot drop $120 on a grocery trip (poor college student for a little longer than expected). I am awestruck when my sister does this at places like TJ's or Ctown (gasp).
  • $120 at ctown is terrifying. I don't even WANT to know unless she's buying boatloads of beer.
