  • If you'd prefer to avoid having to refill calling cards, there's always the International Callback route through someone like UWT, which would be 23 cents per minute for calls to Ecuador landlines (more expensive for connections to mobiles).

In that case, your folks would call the UWT number, hang up after one second, then UWT would call back and prompt what number to call from there, via cheaper connections.

    More about that...

Then again, if they are at all techie, they could try Skype, or perhaps a VOIP account if less so (if they have a good connection there).
  • they're in the country so I'm not so sure about skype (they use that regularly). argh. whatever. the card is still cheaper than at&t's rates.
  • i get a $5 one to call the philippines and that usually lasts about 30 mins.
  • Use skype and call their phone. You can call a regular landline and it's ultra cheap. I use it when my boyfriend travels- calling him in italy and spain was like $0.021 a minute. It looks like ecuador is $0.15 a min

Sound quality is good and they dont even need a computer.
  • er. does that require that I have a mike on my computer thingy? god. I read 2600 but am a total fucking riptard.
  • Most laptops have built-in mics. But yes you will need a mic- you can get them for supercheap at places like target if you don't already have one. Like I said, having a boyfriend who travels internationally 3+ months out of the year has made skype one of my bestest friends.
  • I video skype with my friends in Madrid and Budapest all the time. I love skype
  • argh. there's a hole on my ibook. but it's a g4. is that the mike? (the hole is by the screen) I'm so retarded.
  • that's probably it. you can test it - if your computer has a voice recognition thingy to control the functions, it probably has a mic.

like my technical terms? thingy, whatsit, doodad...

    shut up, dorky thing. :lol::lol::lol:
  • Admit it. It's now in your head.

    *snickers*
  • yeah yeah. who's the smartest person in the room, eh? cripes. I've had no need for a microphone til my parents ran away to another country!
  • *giggle*

damnit. should just recharge the phone card. this skype thing requires that they have decent internetz, too. their fucking town loses electricity every once inawhile.
  • oh. even more giggles now. hee!
  • i buy phonecards very frequently since college to call my parents in south east asia. and usually i buy them online, here is where i usually buy them: http://www.phonecardsforsale.com/

looks like you could get less than 10c/min to ecuador. i have heard comments about how the website looks shady and stuff (it does look that way), but it works. some cards may not have very good connection at certain times, but i probably have bought dozens or maybe hundred of cards throughout the years, most of them are fine.

my parents live in a small town, and i would have done skype or something like that too if their internet connection is more reliable. and skype to phone's international rate is not that cheap either, at least to the country where im calling to. so phonecards are still cheaper.

They don't have to have internet. You can dial a regular phone number with skype- they don't need to register. If they register, the call is 100% free.
  • yay, thanks for the advice folks. gonna try this phone card site.
  • quick question re phone cards:

what's the diff btwn ecuador and ecuador cell? I'll be calling their cell - they don't have a landline (no landlines in bumblefuck) so does that mean I want ecuador cell? this is baffling. :)

    thanks.
  • i never tried cell phonecards, so i cant say for sure. i believe even the regular cards could be used to call cellphone anyway, although at higher rates.

so im assuming the cell cards are the cards with lower rates for cell? maybe. you may want to compare them.
  • the regular ones are cheaper per min - 8.8 cents or something rather than 11 cents. WAY cheaper than my 25 cent/min one right now (stupid bodega!)
  • yeah, sometimes it's cheaper by phonecards. in my case, it's 2-3 times cheaper than skype's international rate.

sometimes it takes trial and error to see which card is most suitable for you. different countries may have different quality. i'll usually try $10 first for the brand that i never used before, if the calls sound clear, then i'll stick to it.

depending on how heavy you use the cards, you may want to avoid cards that charge service fee or maintenance fee. and get cards that have local access number (in this case, NY), they usually have cheaper rates. and avoid using 1-800 access number when making calls, they usually charge extra.
  • You can also get phone cards online - I just googled and there are a few sites to check out.
  • thanks all. while I remain baffled by all of this, I'll figure it out. I've watched enough bourne movies and episodes of burn notice to figure out how to (hopefully) make something work.
