That sounds like fun! I moved here in 1987 but don't have any pictures, only in my mind. LOL

Yeah, it's amazing how much cars date a picture, making an otherwise-mundane image quite a bit more interesting... -
Thanks for posting! I remember that store Scouting Party. They were there a while, then they moved briefly to Windsor Terrace but didn’t last very long there… I had tried to remember what was in the Tea Lounge space back then. Now your picture answers that question: nothing, it was just an abandoned store front...... Anyway, those pictures really remind me of how with 7th ave in the 80’s all foot traffic decreased heavily once you went south of 9th street.

Thanks for posting these! They really took me back. Lord, how I miss Scouting Party... and all the other little stores that just couldn't make the rent because they weren't selling high-ticket items at a shocking markup.
-
"Scouting Party," remember the lady that used to run that place?? My father used to call it "the junk store," and bring me there all the time!
It was originally where Tacqueria was I think, then moved to that corner you see in the photo, then to Windsor Place. -
I miss that butcher. Anyhow, I must have a few photos like this - I'll dig around.
-
I was thinking of doing a photo project and going up and down 5th and 7th Aves and taking pics of storefronts as they stand right now. It's probably too big of an undertaking to do by myself though. Anyone else interested?

Loved that butcher! They were a great bunch of guys.

I think it’d be really interesting if you went to the corner of 7th ave & 10th st and tried to get 3 pictures from identical angles as the ones above.... Then you could post them all next to each other and we could see a “then & now” comparison. -
Great pictures...I loved Scouting Party - I think the owner's name was Jane.
-
I loved Scouting Party too before I worked there. Jane was batshit crazy, she once locked me in the other store on the corner of 9th St to scream at me. I couldn't get out since she had the damn keys!
-
How long exactly was Scouting Party there?
-
The space where the tea lounge was at one time had been a drug store

Don't forget about the Brooklyn Historical Society as a resource for photos. They have an Image collection database that is (completely? not sure) searchable by computer.
Also, check with the Brooklyn History Room at the GAP BPL.
Note: The interesting time for both 5th and 7th Avenues was in the late 60s, early 70s. If you saw pictures from that era you really would be entertained! -
I just went to the Brooklyn Historical Society site and could not figure out how to view photos online.
OK, I wrote to them and asked about searching photos online and this is what they said:
Thank you for contacting the Brooklyn Historical Society. The image database of our Photography Collection is available without an appointment on the days the library is open to the public: Wednesday through Friday from 1-5pm and the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month from 1-5pm. -
When I read your reply, I thought I'd made a mistake when I posted my original comment.
BUT I did not say the database was available online; I said the image database was "searchable by computer".
Sorry you got the wrong impression. Yes, you must go in there first. They have - or, at least, they used to have - an incredible photo collection. It's worth the trip. -
If you find good pictures of 7th ave in 80's, please post a link.
