Medusa Hair Salon (go there!)
Ok. I rarely provide glowing reviews for salons. I'm a crazy, day-glo hair-colored freak who is very, VERY particular about my very thick multi-textured hair.

I feel obligated to tell you ladies about Mary at Medusa salon in Park Slope. Turning my mousy brown hair into platinum, Marilyn Monroe blonde is no easy feat, and cutting my fried, curly and pin straight short hair is a serious event...and I've been going to her for 6 months (3 cuts and dye jobs) and she's been AMAZING. I actually left almost in tears because my hair was finally the white white color I've wanted for 10 years. I know, this look isnt for everyone and, judging by the other clients I saw during the 5.5 hours(!) i was there, its not really her norm either but I saw her do 3 amazing cuts and an awesome perm, plus my own hair.
My entire experience which was a double process bleach plus a toner PLUS a cut was $167, which is really reasonable considering I was there for 5.5 hours and had my hair washed 4 times. The salon is awesome, music is fun, hair girls are cool, products are amazing...I've found my home salon in NYC. I highly recommend it.
**she did primarily more "normal" dye jobs and cuts while I was there, so don't think you have to have a purple mohawk...although I would trust her with that too!
***** and last time I was there it was pouring and she even DROVE ME HOME on her way out because I was her last appointment. Hello awesome!

oh and I have no stock in this place, don't know her personally, I was actually a walk-in a few months ago after I got a horrrrrrrrrible dye job somewhere else. Just trying to help a chick out.

Nice, Carmen. Awesome.
-
Funny -- from your picture, I didn't think you had that much hair to work with...
-
Thanks Carmen!
Sigh, this sounds like the exact type of hairdresser I was looking for a couple years ago when I had two tone hair: platinum and black.
Then I decided to try and get a corporate job ](*,) -

the key is a corporate job working from home. This is what I have

I just think it's funny to be called Medusa. Who wants to have a head of snakes?!
-
Hey Carmen- I need my bangs cut (like now)- do you think they'll charge me an arm and a leg? (like my regular hairdresser did last month....$40!....just for bangs!!!)

I really don't know- I know I can get free bang trims because I get my hair done there, but I cant imagine them charging you for a full cut just for bangs. Call and ask! -
WoW- $10! I'm going at 2pm.
FYI- to everyone phone number: 718.965.3999
On 7th between 1 and 2- across the street from the school. -
sounds really sweet. I love my guy, dave, who works from a place on ave. D in the city. but it's nice to know there are options. and trust me ... if I finally quit this crazy job, I'm going back to purple hair and I'll get my arm tattoos. god, I hate hidin myself.
-
Just got back- really cute/funky spot. I had Kelly, she was cool, did a fine job all things considered. Appreciate the fact that she would trim a little, stop, and ask me if the length was good. You can always take away, butcha can't add!
My official bang trimmin' spot!
Place has been there for 8 years  Sometimes I wonder if I'm blind in one eye. -
So after reading raves about Medusa (here and elsewhere), I've decided to book my next cut/color there.....Any of you ladies have fine, straight hair and can recommend one of their stylists? And by fine/straight, I mean that I basically have toddler hair.

I have straight hair and it's fine (but I have a lot of it), but its not baby fine. The girl I went to (mentioned in post above) was ok. At first I liked the way she cut my bangs, then a day later I didn't, then I went back to liking them.
I think my hair goes into a kind of "shock' from getting cut. Usually takes a day or two for my hair to get with the program.
Anyone even have a clue to what I'm talking about??? -
I don't think this salon would work for me.
-
whatchuwant....I get it. I always tell my hairdressers not to be disappointed if I don't look thrilled. It takes me a few days to love it
-
BklynTransplant, i have fine straight "baby" hair too and its a pain to get a great cut. Gigi at Michael's hair salon on 7th and 6th did a fantastic job on my hair. i actually have volume without fighting with the hair dryer now!
-
@ ilovecarbs: thanks for the tip......the dryer is so frustrating....as is the humidity, which makes my hair flatter rather than poufy. :-( Boo.
-
I LOVE Anastasia. she's terrific for all hair types...i've never left with a bad color or cut from her!
-
I have a very precarious situation with moonlighting stylist from Oscar Blandi who cuts my hair in her apartment. It's a great cut, and cheap for NYC ($60).
But this is great to know about when my current stylist hits it big and starts charging $200. I think that it's only a matter of time. She's good. -
I have a question for you gals: so, you know, I went to Medusa a few weeks back, I liked the girl but wasn't crazy about her cut (just bangs, but hey, I'm picky!). So, she gave me a card, wrote her name on it, the whole deal.
Question is, how weird would it be if I went to another stylist there? I do NOT wish to offend her, she was nice, but at the same time, I don't want to have her cut them again (what she did, I could do at home, honestly- it was just a straight across cut).
Whatchuthink? -
Bueller? Halp!
-
Well, it is your money and your hair, so I don't see why you wouldn't try someone else. It seems like it would be easier if you called and made the appointment in advance and knew who you wanted.
She may not even remember you... -
That's true...she probably wouldn't. I hate the whole social etiquette with beauty salons. The tipping/wanting to switch stylists/telling them you hate it/etc...
-
I went to Medusa a few years ago, when I think it had just opened, and the guy cutting my hair kept up this weird pressure on me the whole time to get highlights done. I have the kind of blonde hair that people pay good money to get -- and no need for highlights -- and it was so off-putting I haven't been back. The cut was fine, but dude, stfu about me NEEDING to color my hair. It ain't grey.
But that was a few years ago, so the people have probably changed. -

Ah, now that's a fair warning. I really dislike salons that pressure to you to buy products and/or services when you came only seeking a haircut.
But that was a few years ago, so the people have probably changed.
My hair *is* turning gray, and still I see no need to color it. -
For the record, Medusa is probably the only salon I've ever been to (in our out of the city) that didn't pressure me to buy products. They offered suggestions when I asked for them and gave me some samples but didn't pressure me AT ALL to buy anything.
Howdy, Stranger!
