Artland — Brooklynian

Artland

Have you ever been to the bar/lounge called Artland? It's on Grand Street in Williamsburg. All I can say is, "W.T.F???"

The bouncer lady frightened me, although I do have to give her credit for being friendly. She is very very tall. She was petting a short guy who was hugging her leg. Her T-Shirt said "Do you want to die?"

  • Has no one else been there?!
  • I've walked past it a few times but never had much desire to go in.
  • Good decision. lol
  • Though I am intrigued by this giant woman and her pet mini-man now  Are we talking a ridiculous contrast in sizes here?
  • She seemed to be at least 6'2 and quite buff/fluffy and the guy seemed to be about 5'5 or so. It was hard to tell because he was sitting on a bench, but he had to stretch to hug around her leg.
  • how frighteningly adorable!
  • They have Pabst beer there and not much else.
Their site makes it seem like they have live bands on certain evenings... Could be interesting.
  • nothin wrong with PBR, as long as it's cheap and not effin' $4 like at Trash. now $3 for a tall boy at Bushwick Country Club, that's whats up.
  • Hm, I think it was $4 for the PBR.

Funny story: My friends and I sat down once we got into the bar to try and collect our bearings and try to figure out how long we were going to stay. The bartender looked over at us and told us they don't have table service!! Really, because I figured such a classy place would...
  • definitely sounds like i won't be checking it out any time soon. $4 for pabst is just downright disrespectful.
  • Just check it out for one drink and then get the hell out. It's only worth a glance anyway.
  • ok deal, if i walk past and see them outside i'll stop in for a drinksie.
  • Haha, be sure to post your reaction to the place!!
  • Subject: Artland a bust

There's not much going on there. It's kind of an odd spot. I'm all about locals, but there's a few strange ones that drink at this bar.

You're better off across the street at the Bushwick Country Club.

Fact x 100. I love that place and I love that my band practices across the street from it.
  • I've been to Art Land once, because my pool team played there. Really found nothing at all notable about it one way or another. Of course, that was a Tuesday night with not many customers on hand other than the two pool teams, but nothing strange, nothing especially cool, nothing that would provoke that "W.T.F???" from the first post. Nothing that made me want to go back; nothing that made me want to stay away.
  • i can appreciate the happy hour til 9 but if that still is only bringing beers down to what i'd pay at regular hours elsewhere, meh.
  • Happy hour til 9 is OK, but still gets beaten by a couple of locals that run it til 10!

While I do like that a lot of places that didn't even have happy hour before now are doing it (thanks, bad economy!), ending it at 8 is just lame. Because I'm usually not home from work yet.
  • 10?! Where?!!
  • or you can just go to places where beers are always $2

or those glorious locales that feature 32oz styorfoam cups for $3.50. these are prices i likes.

Heading out to one tonight, because a friend's band is playing there: Tommy's Tavern on Manhattan at Freeman. The show should start around 10, which will leave a couple of "happy hour" hours before then. Really beats stuff like the Trash Bar setup where they end the "open bar" hour an hour before the first band starts, then start charging $4 for a PBR.

Which is one of the biggest crimes ever commited. PBR is $4 on draft at effin Mercury Lounge. I really just don't like Trash. Tommy's on the other hand is legit and often have awesome shows. Great place to hang out at. And the $2 Schaefer is a good friend.

  • One other plus at Tommy's: they really don't pay much attention to the clock. The happy hour specials supposedly end at 10, but if you've been there and bought a couple of rounds by then (and tipping probably wouldn't hurt) you'll probably still get that price as long as you stay -- at least for the "shot and a beer" specials ($5 or $6 depending on what you want with your Schaefer, Jameson's is $6 but Jack or Jim is $5).
