Time Warner internet dropouts — Brooklynian

Time Warner internet dropouts

nuclear redaction
edited November -1 in Park Slope
Anyone else in the neighborhood been having problems with brief dropouts in TW internet service?

It's been cropping up a lot lately for me. Each one only lasts about 2 minutes, but sometimes they happen every few minutes for a couple of hours. I've been keeping a log of when they occur so I can include the information when I fire off a nasty letter. I know it's the cable and not the web sites I'm on because whenever it happens, I try a few different sites and none will load. Also, the lights on my cable modem start blinking differently when it happens.

Just curious if it's affecting other people in the area or it's just me.

  • Hasn't affected us at all. Sorry you're having this problem.
  • Not hitting me here and I have 2 laptops, wireless printing, roku box, etc. running almost all day long. Am in WT
  • yes for me. It's been two or three days with spotty internet, but the cable tv seems fine.
  • yes!

    grrrrr...

in da slope at 3rd and 7th ave...
  • yup, at my boyfriends on 7th and 15th we were experiencing problems, my net and cable went out for almost an hour and a call to tech support yielded 0 results.
  • not that I'm blaming you, Nuclear Redaction, but I hadn't had any problems until I read this posting, and since then, my TW connection has dropped twice. :)

I'm near the Armory and this is the first time I've had this happen in awhile. The first drop lasted a couple of minutes but the second one was about 15.
  • We have Verizon DSL right now, but when I lived in the Rockaway area of Queens, a lot of us were having that problem with Time Warner Roadrunner.

A bunch of people even got together to make a formal complaint to Time Warner, because it was definitely a problem that extended throughout the entire neighborhood. Same exact thing: connection would just drop entirely for about 2 minutes, even while the connection to the router, etc was still fine. Sometimes, it seemed that resetting the router would fix it, but sometimes that didn't seem to help, so I'm figuring it may have just started working again by chance as those couple minutes elapsed and we were in the middle of resetting.

The worse we'd get it was about 3 times an hour, always pretty consistently apart (about 20 minutes apart). More often, it was about every hour, and sometimes less, but pretty much daily for months and months.
  • Thanks for the input. I'm at 8th Ave. & 10th St., so fairly close to some of you who are seeing the same thing. And now it's affecting my TV too -- I'm trying to watch some shows I recorded on the DVR and they keep freezing and skipping.

By the way, I've heard that contacting the city's Information Technology and Telecommunications Dept. can sometimes work miracles when the cable company's all "Nope, no problem on our end, you and all of your neighbors must all have the same exact problem at your end."
  • I can't find the phone number of Barry Rosenblum, who used to be the EVP of Ops for this area (looks like he now handles Texas).

I recommend an email/phone "carpet bomb" to executives as the way to get resolution. Worked like a charm for me with both TWC and Dell.

Here are the local execs. Google or ask for TWC corporate offices and start at the top:

  • have the same problem all too often. bleh!
  • 212.364.8200

    do eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!
  • My internet has been fine, but the TV has not...freezing; horrible unwatchable picture (like sunspots).

That might be your cable box. The dvr ones are especially crappy. You can take it in and swap it for another one. Your problem sounds like what we had and swapping boxes did the trick.
  • It's both boxes -...I had to change one of mine 4 times - finally had a guy come that tested my connection (it was weak) and checked my splitter (it wasn't working correctly). But now both TVs are having the same problem (at different times)
  • Net here has been shoddy the last two days, yesterday it went out for about 10 minutes and this morning its already gone out twice for 2-3 minutes each. This is highly irritating when I'm working....damn you TWC!
  • this has been happening to me a lot lately also. i'm in the north slope near 7th avenue.

i kept wondering if it was a problem with my wireless apple airport thing, but i don't think that's it. the green light is on and the airport just searches and searches for sometimes hours.

it's REALLY frustrating. i just hadn't gotten around to calling time warner yet. is it earthlink that people are having trouble with? i think that's what i have...
  • I've been having the same problem on and off for the past few days and I'm in the heights on cablevision!

Someone told me this could be the heat, anyone know if that's true?
  • it's always happened on and off. most of the time, the issue is on my end, and just requires my resetting my router and/or modem.

it's been a long while since there's been a massive outage in service, though, or since i've needed to have a tech over.
  • JO518, the fact that you can fix the problem by resetting your router and/or modem doesn't necessarily mean that the problem is in your apartment. I had similar intermittent outages, which I too dealt with by resetting router and modem, until I finally got tired of it and called the cable company. They came over and found that there were problems just outside my building which attenuated the signal coming into the building. They fixed those problems and I've never had an outage since.
  • I"ve tried reseting router, renewing ip address, restarting computer, you name it

    12th st near 7th ave

the past couple days have been terrible
  • Flexichick, I called the number you gave (212.364.8200) - thanks for that (I had to reboot one of my sets 6 times last night, and the other one twice). The woman I spoke to was extremely nice, took all my info, all my phone numbers, said she'd make some calls and get back to me. I do have TW coming tomorrow - I wanted to make this call before they came so at least my account if flagged in some way.

    Thanks for providing the number!
  • Update: Someone called back - she looked at my history and agreed that this is unacceptable - they are sending a foreman over instead of a regular tech.
