'closet maid/factory' or the like to design/install closets?
Subject: 'closet maid/factory' or the like to design/install closets?
Has anyone had to design and/or install a closet from scratch?I need to put one in my bedroom and am overwhelmed at how to accomplish such on my own... does anyone have any recommendations/experience with any closet service and/or designer/architect/contractor??
I've heard elfa is good but i don't think the container store also makes the doors to keep the clothes out of general view...
aie!
thank you!

Hi - yes I actually just custom built a closet from scratch and I went with the Freedom Rail system at Flatiron's Bed Bath and Beyond.
I wanted to use one of the brands that has a kiosk with closet consultants to help me plan the closet so I didnt have to do it myself. There are other cheaper brands such as Closet Maid, but its all DIY. Nobody to give you advice, suggestions or insight into the best way to build the closet.
I started out by going to the Container Store on 6th avenue first to check out the Elfa system. I knew exactly what i wanted in terms of how many shelves and where they were going to placed, and the closet consultant built a digital drawing of what i was looking for and gave me an estimate.
Afterwards, I walked across the street to Bed Bath and Beyond to get a quote/digital sketch of their Freedom Rail System. I found out from the Freedom Rail closet consultant that alot of people first go to the Container Store and then come to Bed Bath and Beyond to see which system is cheaper.
In the process, i found out that the Freedom Rail system was not only cheaper, but it was more customizable than Elfa, because you can custom cut the shelving to the width you need, unlike the Elfa system.
Basically, I'd recommend that you check out the kiosks at both stores and go with the one that works better for you. I had the guy who sold me the shelves at Bed Bath and Beyond install them for me for $200. Supposedly you can install them yourself, but it looks very complicated so I'd suggest you pay the money to have it done by a professional. Good luck! -
Oh wonderful thank you so much!!! That's great!

Cabaki, thanks for that info -- I've been looking for the same thing as Chaplin's Mom and that's very helpful.

My apt is tiny, and I couldn't use any of the custom pre-made solutions, so I had my closets custom-made. It came out great - floor-to-ceiling with drawers and double rods. I can highly recommend the manufacturer, he went above and beyond the expectations.
Let me know if you want to see pictures and need his contact information. -

If you are going to check out kiosks I think there is one at Costco. It's just inside the exit so you probably don't have to be a member to go in and talk to them.

For a more local persanal service try Debbie Getz http://www.closetsbydg.com never used here myself but seen the work and thought it was pretty good.
