Wasn't MEET JOE BLACK filmed partly in the Armory down in the South Slope?
  • "illuminata".. the slope's own john turturro was able to walk to work, to the montauk club, where most of his film was set.

If you can remember more, please add to the list.
I kind of don't want to remember. War of the Worlds was the worse movie EVER.

By the way, so many people -- masses of common, uneducated folks -- hate Valentine's Day that it's becoming chic and sophisticated to love it again.

I hate it when film crews move your car without telling you to an "illegal" parking spot that you can't find before your car gets towed away by the City.
  • It might not count as a movie and some might not call it Park Slope but... A scene from the HBO mini-series Angles in America was filmed on the east side of Flatbush Ave.

There was a choirs singing near the 7th Ave subway
  • Sorry, I wasn't reading closely enough. Not Park Slope, but Brooklyn. I meant the car chase scene, under the elevated train for a long way, all the way to Coney Island I think. But I'm working from memory, I haven't seen The French Connection in a long time.
  • 'Baby Mama' filmed at the Community Bookstore on 7th Ave.

I actually watched that terrible movie this afternoon. It was so hot that I just hid in the air conditioning and wanted to watch something mindless. I did notice that scene in the bookstore looked "familiar."
  • There was this great film.. The Baby Maker (I am pretty sure that is the title) made in the early 70's or so. It starred barbara Hershey and D. Carridine. Same subject... surrogacy... and that one was terrific.
  • Carmen wrote: I wonder what part of eternal sunshine was filmed here. I have most of that movie memorized after watching it about 150 times and I don't recognize anything in it...
I agree. The scene when they're outside late at night and the wooden fence is disappearing, the street sign says "Saratoga". At the end it's filmed on Grand, and I'm guessing the Soho Grand not the E. Williamsburg one.

I watched that movie home alone and was rolling on the sofa in laughter - one of the few films to truly satire liberals. "It fell on the floor."
  • In Shamus his residence in the film was a pool hall on fifth ave between 15th& 16th st on the 2nd floor which is now Japan Karate.
  • re: The French Connection, the chase scene occurs under the New Utrecht Ave El. I believe it starts in Coney Island and goes through Bensonhurst, ending in Bay Ridge.

This week, Thurdsay, there was NO PARKING on PPW from GAP to about Carroll St for what looked like it was maybe a TV show.
Then, Friday, NO PARKING on 7th for the I Hate Valentine's shoot that's been going on around the nabe.
But someone told me about a section of Flatbush that had trucks yesterday for something with the word "Brooklyn" in the title.
Anybody know anything more about that?
Seems like the Slope has given its fair share for a while to the coffers of the Film Bureau.

The Landord was one of those weirdly memorable movies--I bet the netflix 11215 rate is going to spike!
They filmed a part of Jim Carey on a bus, and them in Prospect Park for Eternal Sunshine...I think....
If any of you have a decent house (judging by the comments on this board, I dunno if we're all bitterrenters) BUT there is a piece in the NYT today about how to get $$$ renting out your space. Take advantage of your pocket doors people!! :afro:
  • I have pocket doors but no way in hell would I want somebody filming here. Piss off all of your neighbors while you're at it!

On the (very pretty) street I just lived on for 10 years (until Nov) they filmed SO many commercials. It was annoying as all hell. Then I found out it's because a location scout lived on my block. Grrr.
  • Here's an article published in the NYT about a yerar ago on The Landlord. It says it was shot at 55 Prospect Place. When I saw the movie earlier today the buidlings looked alot like Berkeley Pl between 7th and 8th. Mostly on the north side closer to 7th. I also say Berkeley because of the amount of sunlight hitting the buildings in the background. I don't ever recall that much sunshine getting through the trees on that part of Prospect Place.

  • Okay I am a huge dork, but I blought 'The Lanlord" on VHS if anyone is interested in watching it. Just let me know. And Idlewild I think I agree with you about the filming location.

I think it was called "Brooklyn's Finest" or something like that. Filming at 8th and Saint Johns in a house for I think two days. Trucks and equipment on 8th Ave, Saint Johns (got the whole block!) and Flatbush at the very least. They left lots of trash near the food tent and the trucks parked on the entire width of the sidewalk were annoying while trying to walk my dog.

It was Brooklyn's Finest. I posted some pictures on my site.

  • I just saw Shamus. The fun starts at the 15-minute mark when you see Fifth Avenue looking south from 11th St. Timboo's is right there at the left edge of the screen; unfortunately the reformatting for TV cuts it off so that you only see a piece of it. Next door is a long-gone record store (where Sea World seafood is now). Down the street you can see the old J. Michaels building that is now Mandee. Then we see Burt Reynolds cross Fifth Ave. at 11th St. from the Timboo's side over to the corner that is now New York Commercial Bank but was then O'Neill's Religious Articles. Funnily enough everyone in the street & on the sidewalk gawks at Burt as if they're seeing a movie star! Even some guy inside O'Neill's is pressing his face to the glass! Burt's hangout is a pool hall next door to O'Neill's, which he enters thru that door which is now between the NYCB and Jeans Express (478 Fifth Ave.).

At the beginning of the movie & at various other times we're inside Burt's loft apartment. Through his windows you can see several establishments that were on the west side of 5th Ave. between 15th & 16th Sts, among them Lollypop (children's wear), Brooklyn Radio Center, and Wig Center. This is the block that today houses Domino's Pizza and Sidecar. It looked totally different back then.

At the 33-minute mark we get an exterior shot of Burt's place. It's next door to an old bar & grill called Tom & Jim's that has a stone or fake stone facade that has since been removed from the building. (If it were still in business today it would be to the left of the dry cleaners). So, Hamilton was correct in his post above - Burt's living in an upstairs apartment on 5th Ave. between 15th & 16th Sts. (east side), right where Japan Karate Association is... 565 Fifth Ave. to be precise.

At the 51-minute mark is the long sequence filmed at the 3rd St. bridge over the Gowanus.

At 1:07 we get some glimpses thru the window of the pool hall at the corner of 5th Ave. & 11th St., with Timboo's on the corner and a large crowd mysteriously gathered on the sidewalk.

Then at the 1:09 mark Burt gets abducted by the bad guys right in front of O'Neill's.

Pretty fascinating. Still, I wish there were more street scenes. Burt's all over the place: Sutton Place near the FDR, the West Village, Staten Island...

    trailer's out:

  • I didn't notice "Rounders" being mentioned; they filmed an interior scene at the Montauk Club. I remember seeing Matt Damon standing outside the club and being mobbed by teen girls from Berkeley-Carroll....
  • This is almost like naming every restaurant that has ever been in Park Slope. The list is probably double or triple what we think it is. An independent film crew shot a movie scene in my apartment a few years ago. No one would know it's Park Slope because it's indoors, but it is.
