    "stroller people"? you mean "parents"?
not all parents you know. there are certain very rude and obnoxious people that i refer to as "stroller nazis". again not all parents are stroller nazis.
  • i used to say stroller nazis, until one time when i was chatting with the husband of a chicago friend of mine. the friend had once lived in PS, and her husband, who had only just immigrated from germany, was curious about it.

"it's a nice place," i told him, "pretty, good restaurants. bit overrun with stroller nazis for my taste."

a pause. he looked concerned. "...zere are nazis in your neighborhood?"

    AWKWARD.

yeah but the sad truth is that there probably are actual nazis there too

but hey seinfeld had the soup nazi, there was a guy in soho called the sandwich nazi and brooklyn has stroller nazis...

  • back to bagels.
cream cheese and butter? YUMMM!! Toasted and all melty..ahh..
But wait, are these 2 places the same name/owner? I never remember the names---except for my fave --BAGEL HOLE.
But seriously, the service at President st. is so crappy, they are downright mean! Let's organize a picket!
I can only begin to imagine the picket signs......
"I LIKE BOTH AND I'M PROUD!!"

Fivefifths, you might want to get a sarcasm indicator installed if you seriously thought that post was for real.

I can't think of a worthier cause! We're here, we like both, get used to it!
  • holy cow...a little over reaction to a bagel maybe? the issues being brought up are more about the service (or lack there of). Personally I don't have a problem w/ La Bagel. In either location. I like the bagels, like some of the pastry's, hate the checkout/order at the prez location, don't have a problem with the service, they've been nice to me (for years). a little pricey on some things but right now EVERYTHING has gone up and there ain't no more bargains to be had...i think we expect perfection with things and are unforgiving with the littlest issues. if you have a problem with the service, tell them. but for heaven sakes people, it's a bagel...and ny, bklyn to be exact, has the best!

    Just don't mention the war

  • Its funny Flexi, but I was in line at La Bagel Delight some time ago and up ahead I heard this commotion and some little kid stormed out in a huff. When I got up to place my order everyone behind the counter was laughing so hard they were nearly in tears. I asked what happened and they answered that some petulant little child had slammed his tuna fish sandwich on the counter in anger. They could not stop laughing about it. It was pretty funny.
  • True, La Bagel's line/ordering system (or lack thereof) is the most obnoxious thing on earth, but I like their bagels & I think their attitudes are funny - It definitely adds a certain Brooklyn "charm" to the business.

Bagel "purists" - where do you go around here?
  • RockerGirl77 wrote: Bagel "purists" - where do you go around here?
    Bagel Hole or Terrace Bagels.
  • chowhounders weigh-in on best bagels in Brooklyn...

Personally It's Bagel Hole and Terrace Bagels for me.

On the stroller front here's where I now direct my hating - and I actually saw a couple pushing one of these 2 nights ago on 3rd Street by PPW...

I was thinking of getting the double-wide version of that for my 2 cats.
  • 2 cats? Did you adopt the foster kitty??
  • Mamacita wrote: 2 cats? Did you adopt the foster kitty??
Not the one that you saved (but we did find a great home for her). The next one we fostered got along really well with kitteh#1, which is a tough match to find.
  • Ok, I went to Bagel Hole around noon on Sunday and I've gotta say it was officially the worst bagel I've ever had. You know how some bagel shops make those weird small hard "bagels" for dogs? It was like that. They were pretty much sold out of everything and had limited cream cheese options too. My bagel was not only really small, but tasted so hard that I question it's fresh-baked-ness.

Also, while standing at the counter waiting for the girl to acknowledge my existence (Hey, La Bagel yells at me, but at least they know I'm there), I looked over the side of the counter and saw the horror that is their meat slicer :puker:. My god that thing looked like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. There were hard orange cheese slivers mixed in with yesterday's meat. I have no doubt in my mind there were some health inspection issues there and I wasn't supposed to be seeing that.

I haven't been to Area Bagels yet. That's next weekend. I'm still going with La Bagel for number one. Sorry bagel purists!
  • "The fact that folks flock to this mediocre spot, and not to Area or Bergen, is proof that they're too lazy to push that stroller another few blocks."

A few blocks? Are you serious?

Bagel Hole is a filthy dump. Worst bagels in Brooklyn. La Bagel Delight has attitude but good bagels and sandwiches. For god's sake, it's a bagel shop.

Who tastes a sandwich before they walk out of the place.

Re the meat slicer: here's some info on la bagel http://167.153.150.32/RI/web/detail.do?method=detail&restaurantId=40363249&inspectionDate=20080717

Ick. Even so, this was like rotting gross old food openly sitting there. Also, I'm not positive on food handling regulations in NYC but I know where I used to live there was something about having to wipe the slicer down after every single use. This thing had definitely made a bunch of sandwiches, if not days worth, between wipe downs. I feel bad for the last sandwich that came off there. I really should have taken a picture.
  • This is hilarious!

I stepped into La Bagel Delight this past weekend and was so disoriented that I had to leave. Subway earned my cash that day.

First, why is the menu (of the different types of bagels) only listed on the outside window?
Second, So, where DOES the line begin/end??

The line doesn't begin or end anywhere. Its complete insanity. There are 2 signs "Line 1" and "Line 2" - logic would tell us that one would probably be for ordering and the other for paying, but no - no line is for ordering. Ordering is done by yelling from the back of the mass of people, and paying is done by fighting your way to the front of whatever "line" you yelled towards.

As for the people saying to walk "a few more blocks" to AREA, I was like WTF but then I realized those people think we're talking about the La Bagel in the more Northern part of the Slope. Bagel World at 5th Ave & 5th and is another closer option. I don't think their bagel texture is as good, but their everything has way more sprinkles on it.
  • I really don't see why people have a hard time ordering. When they yell who's next, look around to see if anyone is waiting then place your order. It's not like they have one person behind the counter. There is no line at the deli counter at Key Food or C-Town etc. It goes faster this way. If you are just getting a bagel you don't have to wait behind someone getting a bunch of sandwiches made to go.

or you could go to AREA or Bergen Bagels, where there's an actual line, and get a better bagel to boot.

Some people don't need a line to order a bagel.
  • I just said "OOH, Snap!" out loud on accident.

I would be inclined to agree, except the half-baked "system" they have at La Bagel doesn't even work for those who work there. They always have to ask for my order multiple times and are totally incapable of listening to more than 1 item w/o having to come back to confirm what was ordered.

And, to clarify, we ARE talking about the North Slope location... 7th and President. I've never set foot in the Central Slope location; as a rule, I don't go in places that have opaque storefronts.
  • The one on 7th & President is the AWFUL one. The lines are so confusing it irritates all the customers, and that's before we've even had our coffee! Somehow the one on 4th St. handles it. Maybe it's hands on management; but that other place is a shithole.

They must be pretty similar, because I go to the one on 5th Street weekly & it is always complete chaos. I get yelled at by 6 different people asking if I've been helped/ready to order. But it's all worth it for the chewy delight of la bagel.
